Idle Thumbs 188: A Refined Baby
namman siggins replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
It feels so weird without Remo: he's a fixture of the Thumbs cast. Other than that: EDIT: I 101% agree with Patrick and Danielle on going back to where you were from. I've lived in California for five years now and I always go back to Cincinnati to see my friends and family, I pick-up on big and little changes around the city; I've seen roads and small places destroyed or expanded on. I remember when I was driving to an area where I would spend time to myself during my early twenties. The road I would take to get there was expanded into a five lane and it caught me completely off-guard and I got lost. A route that's burnt into my memory was now in disarray. I had to readjust and find my way back. I think it's funny to experience these changes right away instead of experiencing gradually. 0 -
Been there man. I've lived and continue to live with 23+ years of mild to severe depression, anxiety and somewhat constant thoughts of suicide. It may seem dark, but there will always be pockets and holes of light within your darkest moments. I recommend talking to close friends and family. If no one there, use centers around that deal with this to help you out. Last year, I went to the ER and came back with a 4k bill on medical bills. Not only that my wallet was stolen--my debit cards, driver's license, green card, social security-and went in the red for a bit. Not only that, but I experienced the slow disintegration of my long-term relationship with my live-in girlfriend. I went through some shit, had a multiple nervous breakdowns. I was so far away from my friends and family, it was just me and a girlfriend, though she was getting tired and pissed at me. Yet, I persevered. I used med-ical to cut my bills to $500; I went through the steps to retain my identity and credit back; I accepted the slow death of my relationship. You're a lot stronger than you expect and if you start planning and breaking down what's bothering you, it makes it easier for you. Also remember, it'll take time and a lot of help from various aspects, but it'll work. Trust me Life is fucking mean; I know this very intimately, but it's about enduring and making something good out of it. As of now: I have a new, wonderful girlfriend, school is great and next week I'm on a train back to Cincinnati to see my friends and family. Please don't give up. You're a wonderful human being. You've survived nine years. NINE YEARS of depression. This is just a slump. You will make it. 0

Criminal: an investigative podcast that explores criminals, their crimes and/or people who have been on the other side of crimes. They've been picked up by Radiotopia. Worth checking out if you're a fan of Serial; although, Criminal has been doing it a bit longer than Serial. http://thisiscriminal.com NPR is coming out with a new show next year: http://www.npr.org/about-npr/369399291/introducing-nprs-new-show-about-human-behavior

In a couple weeks, Here by Richard McGuire comes out. McGuire expands on his influential RAW comic short. Check out the short here: http://www.entrecomics.com/?p=9431 And it's being expanded to 300 pages! McGuire plans I explore the history of a plot of land. This may be my comic of the year. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0375406506?ie=UTF8&at=&force-full-site=1&ref_=aw_bottom_links

I was just reading about that! Haha, I love it. I'm a sucker for conspiracy theories: not believing them, but finding and reading and seeing their evolution through the ages. Seeing age old CTs adapt and swallow other theories/creepypastas because of the Internet is fascinating; what's was somewhat a "straightforward" CT, becomes this kaleidoscopic thing because of its ability to swallow and be swallowed by other theories.

I'm finally watching Over the Garden Wall and the way Greg's Frog is drawn reminded me of something. For a while I couldn't place what the frog's look reminded me off until I picked up some Frank comics and there it was! Greg's Frog reminds me of how Jim Woodring draws frogs in his comics.

I'm somewhat in the same boat as you. I think starting a podcast would hopefully move my lazy butt to having more depth that's comparable to my breadth.

Well, would anyone be up for starting a podcast?

Bold: it also helped that Mamoru Hosoda directed the first two Digimon Adventure movies. My favorite part of that movie is when Natsuki Shinohara's avatar get's a rare item from one of the admins (I think) and one of the family members gets crazy happy about it, but then replies, "I have no idea what that means." I think that scene perfectly captures my complex relationship with MMOs and my parents and whenever my parents want to know how to play them.

I've been playing it today and holy fuck is it stressful. In my fifth salvage run with Marko, I sneaked into a house that had a bunch of people on the second floor. It also had a small backyard that connected to another part of the house. There was a gunner on the outside of the second floor where everyone was at looking over the backyard. I decided to make some noise to distract the gunner, but I didn't know the gunner had a rope ladder, and I saw the gunner climbing down the door I wanted to get through... The gunner saw me and I ran, well, Marko ran, but got shot down.... I'm now down a person and I feel incredibly ill and stressed... I just hope I can make it with Bruno and Pavle. I had to take a break from the game a bit after that happened. Bruno and Pavle are depressed and it's going to make the rest of the game interesting. Fuck... Marko....

I think you may be misinterpreting Argobot's comment. I don't think she being dismissive because a novel has fantastical content in, but how that fantastical content is sometimes used as a crutch or a cope-put to "enhance" a novel when it's not needed; and, I have to agree with her. As a huge fan and voracious reader of Weird fiction, Fabulism, Magical Realism, and the like, I enjoy that content when it works best: illuminating the exteriors and interiors of the characters and the world around them. I'm also okay with those contents just being there an... I don't know. This is something I think over in my head a lot because I do believe that having fantastical content in your novel doesn't weaken it or make it less literary. But at the same time, we have authors like a Mitchell who overuses it or uses it when it's not needed and I feel like it adds to the stigma of having such content in your novel.

Idle Thumbs 185: Beppo's Hole
namman siggins replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
hoooooooly shit, Teg. I feel so out-of-it when it comes to Pokemon now. Also the Villainous teams in pokemon got progressively crazy as they went on. Team Rocket: HEY, we're black market Pokemon thieves! And Lets steal Pikachu. Team Aqua: To drown the world and awaken Kyogre, who will further expand the seas. Team Manga: Awaken Groudon and cover the world with fire through volcanoes and have a cataclysmic battle with Team Aqua and Kyogre Team Galactic: HOLY SHIT! This team goes to Spear Pillar, where ancient Pokémon Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina were created by Arceus (the god of the Pokemon universe), use that power to recreate the current Pokemon universe to a place where there's no emotion and spirit; and in which, the leader of Galactic, Cyrus, destroyed himself by opening up another a portal to another world where he can just stop existing in a world of emotion and spirit since he couldn't have his way From thievery to an existential death To quote Cryus: "This world of ours is a crude one. In a word, it is incomplete. It has been, and always will be, a struggle to survive in this world. We humans and Pokémon are likewise incomplete. Because we are all so lacking, we fight, we maim... It is ugly. I hate the incompleteness. That we are all incomplete, I hate it with my entire body and being. The world should be complete. The world must change. Then, who will change it? Me, Cyrus. And Team Galactic. Yes, all of you." -
