  1. The End of Mad Men: "New Business"

The constant "Sorry, I was lying" from Diana just made me roll my eyes. She just doesn't seem like a fully realized person who does things for internally consistent reasons. I liked a lot of this episode, but I hope we've seen the last of Diana.
  2. Life

The biggest worry in my life has gone from my dad's health to "is this guy into me or is he just French?" It feels normal and good.
  3. Other podcasts

I've been listening to Dragon Tongues today, and it's a pretty great dinosaur podcast!
  4. The End of Mad Men: "Severance"

I only just listened to the cast, and I have to disagree with the position that the weird, overtly sexist scene with Peggy and Joan was just there for shock value and out of place. It definitely serves a thematic purpose. These two women have been fighting to be taken seriously the entire show. Joan got sexist remarks all the time in her office as Personnel Manager, and she was in the position to cut off the offender and tell them to go and continue on their day because fuck you that's not okay. Now that she's in a higher position with more responsibility -- something she really wanted and sacrificed and fought for -- she can't do that. She has to sit there and smile through it and just deal with the sexism, so it gets out of control. What she fought for ultimately isn't what she wanted. And Peggy is jealous of that kind of attention, if not that particular expression of it, despite her successful career, so she goes on to try and find it. It serves a definite thematic purpose, and while it was kind of uncomfortable to watch and easy to write off as over the top, I think it was a necessary and fitting expression of how little control Joan has now that she ostensibly has more power, and how Peggy is unsatisfied with her work/private life balance. I don't know if I'm expressing everything I want to here, and I only watched the show last night after catching up (I purposely didn't watch the first half of the season, then somehow the second half started without me having seen it because I'm terrible), so I'll probably revisit this after thinking about it a bit more. But my gut reaction is that it was a good scene that y'all were just too harsh on.
  5. Magical Realism & Weird Fiction thread

Krasznahorkai got really popular a few years ago -- one of those flash in the pan things where people just decided they really liked him for some reason! I think it was related to Bela Tarr's adaptation of the Turin Horse being really well received. He's great once you get used to the unusual structure of his writing and also aren't reading Seiobo There Below, which I like less and less the more distance I have from it. She's not alone!
  6. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

The whole domain thing is something to either giggle or roll your eyes at and I don't understand why anyone would want to treat it as anything more than a silly, forgettable joke.
  7. Eggcorns

One of my favorite blogs has a whole bunch of these, like firstable for first of all http://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?cat=49
  8. Life

Thomas the Tank Engine and Frozen. My nephew would never stop if they put Elsa on a train.
  9. Feminism

Is it really a reference to how you liked to walk up to women and squeeze their cheeks to give them fish face in your youth? It's okay if that's a seductive pout to you, you can be honest.
  10. Idle Thumbs 205: LPBs and HPBs

If Favre's Oeuvre was the title of this episode, I would strongly consider making a twine game full of weird French loanword puns for that jam. You deprived yourselves of this.
  11. I used to live near an art school full of 18 year olds in the big city for the first time trying to be quirky and different and stand out because they're so fun, can't you tell, just look at their antics! Fuck people on unicycles (and those bikes with the big wheel and the little wheel)
  12. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Depending on where you live, it might be pointless to vote anyway! I didn't vote one year when I lived in a very, very red district because what would the point even be. Gerrymandering rendered me mute regardless.
  13. I Had A Random Thought...

My immediate supervisor for the week is named Renfield, so basically I'm going to spend all my time rewriting Dracula in my head instead of working.
  14. Ouran Boast Club - Planning an Anime Podcast

I'd actually be really interested in some rewind type episodes where people talk about older anime like Cyber City Oeda 808, Sabu and Ichi's Detective Tales, or Cyborg 009. Those kind of old, forgotten gems that have had a lasting impact on genres and aesthetics. I know just enough about the history involved to be interested in learning more, but not enough to really have a meaningful conversation about them myself.
  15. April Fool's Roundup

http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/520042a.html Nature finally spoke out about dragons and briefly touched on the prejudice wizards face in the modern world.
  16. Didactic Thumbs (Pedantry Corner)

Would it be more appropriate to call VIPs Very Important People or Very Important Persons? I heard someone call them very important people this morning and it's bugging me.
  17. Life

On the bright side, I talked to my dad today and he sounds like the coolest conspiracy movie villain ever.
  18. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

You can only see so many people say "top kek" about "shrill harpies" in games journalism in a thread about how feminist GG is before you just stop differentiating between the two.
  19. Other podcasts

This was really good! I'd never listened this before (I think? sorry), but I think I'll add it to my rotation now.
  20. New people: Read this, say hi.

That's a thing??? LEGO Scooby Doo????? You are the absolute coolest person to me today.
  21. Life

My dad had a heart attack today and will be having bypass surgery tonight or tomorrow. I don't know how to feel about it. My mom keeps calling me and telling me how scared she is and I just have to comfort her, and I'm doing the same with both of my sisters and it's exhausting, even from 700 miles away.
  22. Life

Tegan, if you're in a really bad spot and need to just get to Halifax for an interview, hit me up and I'll give you what I can to get you there. If you're scared that abusive family members are finding you and you don't want them to, you need to go, and I can't offer a ton to get you gone, but you seem like you're good people so I'll give you what I can.
  23. Post your face!

I got my haircut differently than I usually do and I feel like it makes me look SUPER young, but I also kinda dig it.
  24. Life

I'm not close with my parents. I talk to my mom a lot, but just because she's old and feels guilty about what she's done in the past and I'm not going to tell an old woman that it's too late for her to fix it. I go see them once a year, but I really wish I didn't have to anymore. It's just a hassle. I read trashy fantasy novels sometimes so I have something to talk to my dad about. We don't have anything in common aside from that. He was in the hospital at some point recently and no one told me until after the fact -- that's how super close we are.
  25. Idle Thumbs 203: Goat Impossible

The graphs in Capital are unimportant. I'm not sure how the math (there's not much, but there's some), but it should be a decent listen.
