Sometimes the best way to tell if there's an allergy is to just check if exposure to the thing causes an allergic reaction! If it might be a minor/developing allergy, it could be hard to tell without any of the substance in your system. As long as there's no risk of death, it's okay! Hooray for humans being science experiments! Edit: That sounds miserable, though. Really, really miserable.

Thank you for reminding me this exists! I don't like Tobi at all, because of his casting style and because he kind of gives off a gross gamerbro sleazebag vibe. I'll give this a watch later.

I think all the conversation I've heard about any fashion choice made by any man combined is dwarfed by the amount of conversation I've seen about just Anita Sarkeesian's earrings. I think they look really good on her and am jealous because I really like big earrings like that, but I can't really wear them. That is my contribution, thank you and good night.

I'm going to bring actual numbers into this, just so I know if I'm being reasonable or not. I'll spoiler it so I don't bother people who don't care.

In my new position, I'm part of a hiring team, so I can say with confidence -- don't take them missing a "we'll call you by..." deadline personally. Places are busy, and hiring new people is secondary to keeping the place running. I personally dropped the ball on scheduling a second interview with someone because I was just overwhelmed that week, and they were the candidate that ended up getting hired. It's a small comfort, but take it for what it is.

I'm affiliated with a university and am friends with a lot of faculty, and people will complain about the regents, the administration, and the parents in an earnest, I can't do anything about this and it's infuriating way, but when they complain about the students it's in more of a, "I'm not reaching this person. How do I better reach this person?" way, or a "listen to this thing about this young little asshole" way. It's different in the tone and the amount of complaining, definitely. But I also have a friend who works in Conflict Resolution (the university department committed to settling problems between students and students, and students and faculty), and there is a very real problem with students making mountains out of molehills. Not in a life ruining way, but in that naive way that young people do things. I think a lot of the perceived problem is that people attribute malice to what is a natural phenomenon for young people -- they're trying to prove themselves, so they commit to things that people who are more fully realized adults think are ridiculous. I don't think that's a problem. The university should provide a safe space for that kind of action, and a safe space for failure.

Video Game Pricing - Fair or Not Fair
Mangela Lansbury replied to Zeusthecat's topic in Video Gaming
When Blu-Ray first became a thing, I remember movies being more expensive -- maybe around $40-50? I saw a lot of reporting that the technology was cost prohibitive and people should wait to invest in a Blu Ray library. I might be imagining that coverage or misremembering people saying the players were too expensive (I wasn't in a position to buy high end video technology at the time, so I didn't care that much), but it's kind of worth noting? -
It's not internally inconsistent. The joke mocks the in power who feel threatened by a nothing thing. But when you start to get feedback from people without power that hey, whoa, that's not cool, you can examine the situation, realize you're doing unintended collateral damage, and stop. This is how I see it, anyway. I haven't read the article that prompted this, so someone who has might be able to say that better and in a different way.

Yes! netflix.horse is A-OK

I keep being approached and asked, "Have you thought about your salary yet?" so today I just looked up what the average salary is for the title I'll have and said, "This is the average, so that's probably a good place to start the conversation." Thankfully (or not thankfully?), I work at a place where salary information gets FOIAd every year, so there's a public, searchable database of salary information. Is that a good thing to do??? How do I negotiate a salary???

If Silencer doesn't have a strong start (as in getting/being in the vicinity of kills so he gets free int), he's just a really squishy global silence. And silence is kind of easy to get out of later in the game, so if you pick Silencer you're kind of setting yourself a deadline in a way? I don't know, I'm bad at Dota.

How do you express anger on the Internet, though? Don't your pinkies start to cramp 5 pages into your diatribes?

The only thing that takes place before 0080 chronologically is Mobile Suit Gundam, the first show in the franchise. I don't really remember which one 0080 was, but you'd probably be okay starting off with it.

When filling out poorly done electronic forms in Word, it's useful to push insert so you can just overwrite the line of underscores as you type instead of typing and then deleting the extra characters. This is the only purpose I can think of.

Well, that's Cloud 9 for you. They don't handle setbacks very well. I don't know if it's just EE or what, but something in that team doesn't work. They can never seem to get motivated after a loss.

I've used the insert key on purpose at data entry jobs, but that's about it.

what was that statistic they put up, C9 features in 5 of the 10 biggest comebacks and lost 4 of them or something like that? so C9 is also really good at losing games they have already won, is what I'm saying I guess
-
I really wish C9 was, like, better.

You could always try Fantasy Mission Force, the most ridiculous movie I've seen starring Jackie Chan!

The gator rhetoric is ridiculous when it's written, but the meme filled mockery is even more ridiculous/funny/sad/exasperating when it's spoken.

I bought some stemless wine glasses at Target -- their brand that's in a black and red box. I don't remember the name of the brand, but they've done me right. My other wine glasses (stemfull? stemmed?) just came from Ikea. 3 years in and they're still fine.

That might be because of what they're recording with! They might have a positional audio recorder, so the audio from either person would be stronger on whatever side of the recorder they're sitting on. I've heard some recordings from those that are pretty lopsided. Never anything that isolates them to either ear though...

While we're talking about it, what kind of mortar and pestle would y'all recommend for saffron? I always feel like I lose half of it because I can't recover it from the mortar and pestle, and it's such an expensive thing for me to feel like I'm wasting.

I'm so sorry for your loss and that you have to go through this kind of trauma. Are you still with the people you've been doing this trip with? If you are, don't be afraid to turn to them for support. The kind of support that you all can provide each other will be invaluable in coping with a tragedy like this.
