  1. Looks like there isn't a thread for this upcoming masterpiece yet. Just cause 2 was such a pretty, over the top action movie simulation. I am so excited to do it all again on a new island.

  2. Oh hi, I'm late to the party. I haven't played CK2 in ages so I'm sure to do a bunch of awful things, but if you want to entrust me with that terrible power I won't turn it down.

Don't worry our Dynasty has terrible longevity so you will die before having the chance to ruin anything :)

  3. They tend to remove C (books and comics) and S (most games) canon when it "directly conflicts" with newer or higher canon, and some editors seem to be taking a broader view of the term "conflict." It's supposed to be bumped down to the bottom of the article, under a separate heading, but it's been removed completely in some articles, at least to my eyes.

They are deleting all the history I learned in my childhood. This new Disney regime is pretty brutal.

  4. Steam of thoughts as I listen to the Podcast:

The scenes with Betty and Glen were so gross! The whole time I was watching it I was wondering if the Glen had been using Sally to stay close to Betty.

It looks like Don has reached peak not working at work, which is great, except that work is all he is.

I am glad I don't see the "Next time on Mad Men" things anymore, they were so annoying and pointless.

P.S. Rodger now has the Octopus painting in his office!!!!!!

  5. I get the complaining about them, and I feel that the original versions of games should be preserved for history's sake, but honestly I love the idea of remasters and rereleases. My eventual goal is to replace my entire physical game collection with digital versions, so the sooner the better.

I'm really fond of the way that Nintendo remasters (eg: Ocarina of Time 3D, Super Mario 64 DS) make the game look the way you remember it. Like, you look at it and think nothing's changed until you go back and look at how low-poly and retroactively crummy they look.

I feel like preservation is key. My CDs for Grim Fandango are in really bad shape, they kept causing the game to lock up. The work around I was using was pretty ridiculous. I copied the CDs over to fresh ones, which ended up with different errors. I was saving a lot and swapping between original and burned CDs to get through the game.

  6. I went through a similar thing with Warcraft lore at one point while I was playing that game heavily. I think I read through the entirety of that same Wikia for every location, character, and thing that had ever been created for that universe. There was something cool about seeing how the lore slowly evolved from just the backstory for a couple of games to this entire universe that was full of history and interesting characters with various backgrounds and motivations. I feel like they did a pretty good job of stitching a bunch of these random, seemingly incoherent story elements together throughout their various sequels and expansions without leaving too many seams showing and without having to go too crazy with retcons.

In general I am a fan of lore as long as it isn't required to enjoy the game. WOW and Elder Scrolls pretty much hit that sweet spot perfectly for me where I had a blast playing them even though I wasn't familiar with the lore and because I enjoyed them so much, it motivated me to want to dig a little deeper into the lore which then enhanced my enjoyment of the games even further.

Warcraft 3 and WoW also did some serious retconinng to make sense of the first two games.

  7. I think I'm the opposite of folks in this thread.  I wasn't a fan of it.

It didn't vary enough from Portal to capture my interest.  I didn't like the environment, the authority figure, the computer system, or the puzzle mechanics.  The game didn't do anything to capture my attention in the first hour of it, and that's sort of my threshold.  I didn't want to keep playing out of the hopes that it would get better in case it didn't, and I would have wasted two hours instead of one.  I preferred the linearity of Portal to this more open design.  As I get older, I have less and less time to game, which means I have less and less patience for open-world games.

I don't think it's a bad game by any possible stretch.  All the pieces are there to make a very good game.  I just clearly wasn't in the mood for it when I played it, and now I have no desire to go back to it.

I know what you mean, there was something about the puzzles I found really off putting. I got the feeling that there was one, precise way to solve the puzzles and if you are a little off in timing or placement of objects you lose. I find this level of finickyness really annoying. I also didn't understand what the non-linear design added to the game, the in between spaces felt like clutter to me.

  8. The conservatism of Megan's family is classic catholic, not European specifically. (French Canadians have a complex relationship with their European heritage, many feel that they were abandoned to the British and got little support of their attempts at independence.) I agree this episode had lots of moments that felt like filler considering how little time is left in the show. Maybe things will matter later, but so far there seems like no real storyline to this half-season, each episode so far has felt self contained. This could also change, but again we are running out of time. I am worried that they will spend the whole rest of the season giving each minor character enough screen time to tie off their life and as a result make the final episodes very scattered.

  9. Did someone say lore?

Still one of my favourite games, but I've never really understood that choice.

The Neverhood is actually an interesting Lore example. You have to collect all the disks to receive an item after watching the video they contain. and then there is the library wall. (I tried reading it all once, not recommended.)

  10. Cool, I didn't even realize these were all available on Steam. Bought it, with the physical stuff. Also now I'm thinking that since I have a relatively big screen, maybe I could play some digital versions vertically in hot-seat mode. Probably not due to the games having secret information (or maybe all don't?).

I'm hoping they will work with touch screen controls on my surface pro3.
