Hearthstone: Because what Magic really needed was F2P mechanics
Griddlelol replied to Problem Machine's topic in Video Gaming
I have a problem; I always pick the underdog. I had two horrible games, I was kicking ass then one player drops Alex and kills me. Another I had managed to buff my Frothing Berzerker to 11 attack (while my opponent has 11 health) in one turn, and he drops death wing and beats me. I dunno, fuck free to play. I came so close to dropping money after those games. -
Hearthstone: Because what Magic really needed was F2P mechanics

I'm back on the hearthstone wagon. Such a fun game, I really love it, but as soon as I pick it up, I immediately remember why I stop playing it. 15 minutes in a game you can't pause is kinda a lot in real life. You have to separate out time to put some games down. My win ratio with a warrior deck I'm using is about 50%, it's sub-par because I don't have many good cards, but I'm making it work. The losses I come across are generally people who blow me out the water. If it's a close game I always win, but anyone who's got significantly more practice than me destroys me. I still make a bunch of mistakes and don't see synergies that other people do. Occasionally I still confuse attack with defence (in a recent game I used cleave thinking I'd take out both enemies, only to realise I'd confused the stats). I'm still awful at arena, if I don't get warrior I don't get anywhere. -
I sincerely hope every RPG won't be like Skyrim. Although after its (confusing) success, I'm sure most will try to ape it. Still, if people can make a Skyrim-like game, that is good in the ways Skyrim sucked then we should be getting some fantastic RPGs. Zelda-Skyrim - fucking yes please. Dragon Age-Skyrim - probably awesome.

Thanks everyone! So what have I got here? Super Metroid, Link to the Past, Earthbound, Megaman X and Megaman 2, Uncharted Waters: New Horizons, Mario 3 and Super Mario World (for shame). That sounds like plenty! As for the GBA games: I played a shit ton of GBA, the only one they have on VC I want is The Minnish Cap.

Force run is mandatory in both KotOR games. Which one has the speech option: after an old Jedi gives you a long ass speech? I think I was literally crying with laughter at that line.
-
I agree, I've not played a huge amount of DS, but I feel like you have to start from the beginning. Plus it's a surprisingly short game if you know what you're doing.

This is probably the right place to put this: I have a month of free time (i.e. sans partner) to smash out some games. I had a terrible idea of buying a bunch of VC NES/SNES games for my WiiU and ploughing through classics I missed - I was too young for the NES and my parents wouldn't let me have a SNES. Within the limit of WiiU (and maybe 3ds) VC titles, what classics should I pick up and play ASAP? I have played only Mario Kart for the SNES at a friend's house, and I'm looking for single player games. Pretty much set on picking up Super Metroid and A Link to The Past, but what else did I miss and need to play?

Normally I'd be thinking that, but it was how a character specifically told you not to be too good or too evil. No moral choice game I've come across has that. Thee were even some robes in the game called the Grey Jedi Robes (I think) that supported the neutral alignment, giving you a small bonus, again, not something I've seen in a moral choice game.

I'm pretty excited for this game. I loved DA:O. I think I played all the opening sections, and made it through the campaign a few times. I never touched DA:2 though, probably a mix of it being released during a period of exams and also having terrible reviews. From the sounds of it, it probably was pretty mediocre, so it wasn't a big thing to miss. What I've heard from DA:I is that there's a lot more control over the synergistic spells/special moves they included in DA:O. For example freezing people with a mage, then shattering them with a warrior. I liked the idea of that stuff, but it was pretty hard to do. I hope they fix the healing system too. I found myself playing as a healer more often than not, simply because they were so important to have exact timing, while the dps/tank classes could be sufficiently controlled by the AI. The system to set up levels of "if player is below X health, use X spell" was a nice idea, but in practice it didn't really work.

I think the most annoying flaw with KotOR 2 (which I really liked) is that one of the characters seems to suggest that the "neutral" path was the most sensible. That neither going good or bad makes you a better Jedi/Force user/Whatever. But if you try to do that, you get diddly squat. All the cool bonuses (and if I remember rightly, class upgrades) require you to be mostly good, or mostly bad. I didn't want to be either good or bad, I wanted to be neutral. Seemed more fun to do a bad thing if it benefited me (rather than sometimes you can do something evil for evil's sake) and the same with good deeds. Not the paragon of virtue, nor the evil jerkface the game makes you play as. Still, the bit when you crash down using the basilisk and storm the strong hold was really cool. Thinking back on it, I really liked that game. Same with KotOR. Anyone play Jade Empire? I really wanted that for my Xbox, but I couldn't afford it at the time, and forgot about it.

My feelings were that Sonic was mechanically inferior to Mario. Mainly in the aspect of momentum - Mario rewards you and makes you feel fantastic if you generate high momentum, Sonic makes you feel like you suck when you lose momentum. That always put me off, the moment you make a mistake and you stop dead in your tracks after being fast and fluid. Felt like I was being punished for being human.

Pretty much. Reminds me of the first week on my first real job. A co-worker asked me "how do you feel about having a woman for a boss?" I didn't even know it was a "thing." Many of my university lecturers were women, and it honestly never occurred to me that it would be a problem. You can probably tell I lived a pretty sheltered life when it came to sexism. I didn't know it existed until I first finished university. Came as a bit of a shock, and now I'm trying to learn as much about it as I can (although I still find the idea of Women's Studies strange and un-academic).

Cool that's good to know. The original would still probably be a better choice - I have a rather old iOS device, and I'm sure it'll be cheaper!

Talk about going down the rabbit hole. I know literally nothing about "pick-up artists" and assumed that was just a derogatory term like "player." I always associated that hat - as you said - with 1950's gangsters in Chicago, maybe I'm missing this whole thing because I don't live in the USA. The only people I know who wear hats like that in England are indie musicians/wannabe indie musicians. I also know nothing about hats - I look stupid in every single hat ever, so I am wilfully ignorant on all things hat related.

How did Sonic ever get so popular though? The original games aren't that fun - I know a lot of people will disagree with me on that, but I always found them lacking. I can see how the idea was spawned by a corporate meeting on how to make a character with attitude the kids will love, but that doesn't explain why the game play is done so wrong. Sega surely had some good designers at the time.
-
Oh ok, that's...weird.
-
Miles Prower? Great. I listened to the guys from 84 Play talking to a Sega marketing guy, and they seriously think that Sonic is still relevant. What makes them think that children will understand what a "conspiracy theorist" is or why it's funny? I hope Nintendo don't follow suit and put out a Mario TV show. I seriously doubt they'll do that though.

Laughing uncontrollably at this. Also, what's with the hats in the Castlevania gif?
-
Most of those still use the Adjective/Trait = name that I was describing. The worst is Amy her trait is that she's a she! Robotnik is a pretty cool name, but now he's Eggman...because he looks like an egg. Damn that's some originality there. I was about to complain that Trixie had the wrong colouration for a badger, but...Sonic. I feel like I'm 8 again, but man, Mario has so much more personality than every single one of those characters. Yeah! Console Developer Wars!
-
WHY ARE ALL THE SONIC UNIVERSE CHARACTERS NAMED AFTER THEIR TRAITS? Do they have no discernible personality or individuality aside from those traits? This is now the "Fuck Sonic" thread.

Somebody Please Explain This Scene From Transformers 4 To Me

Wait, transforming robots are made of "transformium" rather than just having motors and mechanisms to shift parts of them about? That's so lame. Also if transformium has no definable characteristic, how can you possibly know that it exists? -
Wow, sonic is kinda modest. He should give up being "number 1" for a year so we can have a Year of Knuckles (or Tales, I don't really know who's the Luigi equivalent).
-
THEN WHY DOES HE NEED A CAR TO RACE?
-
Wow, I burst out laughing at work while drinking coffee. Now everyone is staring at me and questioning why I think this gif is so hilarious.

My experience with a projector is that you need to black-out the room. Which I personally hate since one bright object in a dark room gives me a headache. I've also played megadrive on a projector at a buddy's house. It worked with the lights on, but you don't see much detail like that, and the colours are kinda shitty without total darkness.
