I just discovered this, and thought it was appropriate for this thread:

That was an interesting read. I can relate to some of it, but certainly not the more outrageous parts. For example, I never "hit" on girls, I think that whole concept is gross and demeaning to both parties. However if someone was clearly coming on to me, I'd recognise it and act on it immediately. I guess a small amount of confidence makes a huge difference. Funnily enough, I told my friend recently how every relationship/sexual encounter I've had, the girl spoke to me first (which is true) and he was completely stunned that I didn't have to go out "on the chase" and baffled that a girl would come on to me (he's so complimentary). The idea of actively pressuring yourself on someone feels so weird to me and I think I'd dislike being in that situation.

Listening to both Chris and Jeff Gerstmann talk about Destiny, they both seem to have the same problems. It's like a lot of people are finding it Halo minus some cool stuff, plus some RPG stuff, while also seeming to call it bland. I should also add: Health bars are lame. How the enemies reacted to damage by both animation and AI movement was one of the things I loved about Halo. For example the Elite's shield smash, then blood, while it ran and hid waiting for its shield to recharge. However, I think Chris was wrong when he commented on how a boss - I guess the infamous Wizaaaaaard from the moon - required him to hide and shoot, hide and shoot which he decided was shitty. I remember every boss in Halo games (granted I didn't play 4) being exactly like that. Hide then shoot, don't stand there and play tactically, just hide and take pot shots. The most egregious example that comes to mind is the Elder? in Halo 2. Where he's flying around on a throne or something, you shoot the shit out of him while hiding from loads of fire, then jump on him and punch him. Rinse and repeat. Maybe it's more obvious in Destiny because of health bars - you can see that this guy is a bullet sponge which maybe makes it feel more of a chore. Also the fact that there will be more bosses in Destiny compared to Halo, just by design, but that probably wouldn't have been apparent in the beta.

That does kinda sound fun. In that incredibly crisp Disney style art I think it could be entertaining.

I've only heard bad things about Shank, but Mark of the Ninja is such a brilliant game I keep wanting to try Shank out. Although from what is said about Shank and what I think about MotN, it seems that Klei went from a rather average developer into a fantastic dev in one game, then managed to continue down that track, so I don't even know if it's worth it. Their next game, um...the spy one, looks pretty damn good. Klei have a way of making me interested in their games just by the art, plus how they don't remake the same game over and over makes me even more interested.

Woo, I got earthbound cheap and it triggered my wii u digital deluxe voucher allowing me to get a link to the past for 49p. The retro gaming starts tomorrow! Actually it started tonight. I couldn't wait to start ALTTP

I should add everyone to my PSN, completely forgot about those threads. There's still just not many games for the PS4 yet though!
-
I wish I had access to the beta to give the game a serious go. I wouldn't mind buying it to try, but considering it requires me to buy a PS4 & the game, it's a pretty big investment for something that I might not have fun with because I don't have a populated PSN friends list.

My biggest worry about this is that it won't be fun to play alone. Most of my gaming is done in short 30mins-1hour chunks, then very occasionally I play for 2hours+. People don't tend to want to play with someone who only logs on for 30 mins. Similarly, if I'm only playing 30mins a day, I'll struggle to keep up with other people in terms of gear and levels and so will be stuck on my own. If it's not fun single player, I think I might have to bow out and accept that Destiny, no matter how much I love the idea, probably isn't for me.

Do you play with friends, with randomers, or alone Mington? Edit: Actually, same question to everyone.

Hearthstone: Because what Magic really needed was F2P mechanics

I've not tried the 3rd boss, but the 1st two were fun. The second was actually quite difficult, her hero power was very opposed to how I play, and it forced me to react after I lost one round. Enjoyable! -
It can wait!

I've yet to finish 3d world. I keep getting frustrated and having to quit. Partly because I'm always tired from work when I play it. In other news: I RACED AGAIST REGGIE IN MARIO KART. He kicked my ass and was picking on my girlfriend. He hit her with 2 green shells and took her position in second place. I guess I could figure it out tomorrow and try and find a time that would fit most people over the weekend.

I feel like we should organise a Mario kart 8 idle thumbs tournament this weekend. Anyone interested?

Curious: why reundismpower?

To be fair it's not just "minority accents" that I have a similar reaction to. When I first moved to the north of England and heard someone speak with a Liverpudlian accent for the first time, I couldn't stop laughing when I walked out the bar. It was such a shock that people actually talk like that, and it's not just some ridiculous TV caricature.
-
I watched that Black vs White vs Truth video, mainly out of interest, but I made sure I finished it because the guy's voice made me react badly - I've never heard someone speak like that outside of a movie/TV, and I'm also an academic snob so I thought it was important to continue. It was a great video, he made a lot of good points. It's kind of upsetting to have it said straight up and in my face like that. I just wish he hadn't gone all evangelical at the end.

Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

I think I beat mario kart 8 today. I got a star in all the cups and unlocked the golden kart. It's a fantastically fun game, and probably my favourite mario kart since double dash. The online capacity isn't perfect (I get disconnected a lot, and I'm not sure if that's my internet or the wii u) but it's great to race against other people. All in all, it got me to buy a wiiu and I don't regret it one bit. Really enjoying everything Nintendo has to offer, and mario kart is still the only racing game that gives me even the slightest bit of excitement. Couch coop with people is the best way to play it, and I really wish I could muster 3 other people (I always play 2 player with my girlfriend and sometimes one extra person) to see it. -
Thanks for the replies, I discussed it with my girlfriend and it totally get it now. Even if someone does such things to men and women, they should be aware of sexism and thus take into account the culture/history as they proceed (or not proceed) to be a douche. If they don't, they're sexist...right? Saying it's not sexist to "mansplain" to a guy but is sexist to a woman, doesn't mean that it's suddenly and OK thing to do to a guy, it's still shitty behaviour, but it doesn't have that whole "I'm better than your gender" undertone.

I guess my point isn't that it doesn't happen (and those articles weren't really about any sort of explanation, more interruption and confidence, which is something I'm not disputing), but a rather more general point. If something is happening to everyone, can't you apply Occam's razor to suggest that it's less likely to be sexism/racism/homophobia, and more likely that it's just people being jerks in general? The fact that it happens to women more than men doesn't imply sexism on the part of the perpetrator in my mind, it rather implies that men are generally more confident (which is due to a sexist society but that's a separate issue). I hope I'm not coming across as though I don't believe this is a thing: I do, what I'm finding hard to understand is if it's sexist behaviour or not. It doesn't seem like it is directly, but is caused by indirect sexism and/or overconfidence. I guess it sounds like more of a symptom of a sexist world coinciding with arrogant people, rather than an action done out of maliciousness? Does that make any sense? However does that make it less excusable... sorry ma'am, I wasn't meaning to be sexist, it's everyone else's fault. Sorry, I'm really finding it difficult to get my thoughts down in a coherent manner, it's coming out in a bit of a mess. Probably because I don't really know what I'm talking about.
-
That probably doesn't help. I'm still unsure whether I want wiiu or 3ds version. It's a shame that Nintendo doesn't do cross buy.

Obviously I'm missing a whole area here - being a man and all, but after reading that I feel as though I've been in or seen situations like that plenty of times. Not quite as exaggerated - I've never written a book, but still...To me it seems like a thing shitty people do (well, overconfident people who feel they have to prove their worth despite ignorance in the subject area), rather than specifically shitty men do to women (although in my experience it's only been males that have done that to me or around me). Is it exceptionally common for men to do this to women? Or is it more like people (less so the author as she describes the so called intersection of gender politics and confidence) just like to say it when someone's been an asshole? The reason I ask is because it's quite easy to not notice things like this as being a trend, and whether that trend is based on sexism (accidental or not) I also find hard to spot.

Hearthstone: Because what Magic really needed was F2P mechanics

I experienced what you said when I played a quick match this morning. My opponent busted out 3 legendaries (one per turn, costing all his mana each time), I forget which ones, but after their initial effect, I was able to deal with them all very easily just using basic cards. One fell to a cleave->execute, the other fell to a shield bash->execute and the final I could ignore completely because I had enough minions out/with charge to burst him down. 7-0 with this new deck (not counting casual mode). My luck has to run out soon. -
Apparently they're putting in every language for the countries they're releasing in as an option, which is causing it to take some time. Said as an Englishman (and so ignorant and aloof)...they shouldn't bother: Everyone speaks English anyway. The German censorship system affecting the whole of the EU is a shitty matter, but that's probably not what's causing the delay.

Fair enough (although in the death wing case, he had only 1 card in his hand because I was pressuring him so much and so constantly) it's just crazy how much one card can turn the tables. Also I neglected to mention that I had 3 other decent cards out. So while one removal spell couldn't have done it, I still take your point. I don't tend to concede, mainly because I've seen how it's possible to turn the tables in one single play. Doesn't happen often, but when it does, you feel like a god. I tend to have trouble with rogues and locks, occasionally shamans. Just when an opponent has loads of cards that they keep buffing up, if my aoe cards don't come out in time, I struggle to regain momentum and feel like I'm reacting rather than pushing.
