  1. Gamescom 2014: Sprechen Sie deutsch?

Apparently it's "exclusive for holiday 2015" which doesn't mean a hell of a lot. There's some serious hate going around, people can get crazy over some dumb stuff. However I have absolutely no interest in Tomb Raider after the last instalment.
  2. Gamescom 2014: Sprechen Sie deutsch?

I think I was most excited for "Wild" and "Rime" both of which looked really cool. Oh, and Bloodborne, but we all know that's going to be great.
  3. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

I had the same thought, Twig. Most the scenes I can think of involve someone slapping an hysterical man in a sitcom (specifically when Homer continues to slap Ned Flanders while stranded at sea on the father-son rafting vacation). Not really a great representation of occurrences of the trope though, so I could easily be wrong. Maybe in the 60-80s it was something that happened mostly to women in TV, but I think it's progressed to be rather ubiquitous.
  4. I'm like this. It's rarely one game on it's own, but usually there's one game that pushes me over the edge. With the WiiU, I wanted 3d World and Wonderful 101. Then Mario Kart came out and I couldn't stand the pressure any more. I think Destiny made me buy the PS4, even though it's not out. However it's the huge collection of indies Sony are grabbing, plus the upcoming Bloodborne that sold me on it in the first place. I actually think the PS4 is the console I've bought closest to launch. Normally I wait at least a year + to make sure there are a bunch of games out.

  6. Rogue Legacy

I've been trying quite a lot, but in a very unlike-me moment, I died on Khdir for the 20th time in a row and almost threw my Vita across the room. That made me stop. Some of the Trophies I'd like to complete. The "Complete the game in 15 lives or less" is an interesting one for me. I'd like to have a crack at that.
  7. Rogue Legacy

I think your analysis is correct. It's more of a personal failing that I find Spelunky more frustrating, despite the progress being equally slow between the two. The difference is I've put far, far more hours into Rogue Legacy. Changing the topic slightly. Them boss remixes are hard. I don't think I'll ever have skill to beat most of them. The lack of health makes them incredibly tough - the Khdir (?) remix allows you to get hit a total of 5 times. I just don't have the dexterity or reaction times to do that.
  8. Rogue Legacy

I think the only reason I compare the two a lot is because they are both rogue-like 2D platforming games I played in late 2013/2014. It's not really a great connection, it's rather like comparing Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and The Last of Us. I also think that the major difference between the two is that Rogue Legacy makes me feel like I'm developing skills, even when I'm not. Spelunky makes me feel like I'm bad. It's partly because I looked at youtube videos of Spelunky and saw people doing crazy stuff, while the only thing I knew of RL before I played it was listening to praise on podcasts. Necrodance really intrigues me, but I've come to realise I hate playing non-strategy games on my PC. So what I tend to do is pick up stuff in a humble bundle for PC, if I like it, I then double dip and grab it for a console. Means it could be a while before I seriously play that.
  9. Spelunky!

I got to that today, and I lost interest fast. I'm going to try the Daily Challenge challenge - i.e. do it every day for as long as possible. Maybe that'll spark up my interest again.
  10. Spelunky!

I picked up Spelunky again today, while drinking my morning coffee. Despite my months away I made it to the Jungle...and immediately landed on some spikes I didn't notice. I'm still in two minds about this game. The actual progression through the levels is fun, but when I die I immediately want to stop. I don't hit that quick restart button, I just turn it off. In comparison, when I play Rogue Legacy, I die, I immediately hit restart to blow my cash on upgrades, then find that I've already walked into the castle ready to have another go. Is that one tiny bonus of +5 HP making the difference between loving a game and finding another good?
  11. Recently completed video games

I've got a similar response as Yasawas, it's a double whammy of great indie games. Today I beat NG+ of Rogue Legacy. Really happy with that game, took me a long time to get the first boss down (I've had this game on PC for ages, but double dipped to get the vita version, which is perfect for it), and once that happened, the rest all started to fall into place. I really enjoy battling the way through the castle to a boss, even the farming up gold when you get a shit bunch of kids is fun. However I found myself only really using 3 classes: The Barbarian King/Queen; my work horse, these guys did most of the discovery and boss battling. The Assassin; my boss killer, they pump out so much damage and can avoid tons of incoming damage, but don't have enough health to deal with the trash. Finally The Paladin; my farmer. The rest of the classes I found to be either pointless, or not compatible with my play style. I'm probably going to keep playing this through until I'm really bored with it. It's a shame the boss remixes are ridiculously hard. I've only managed one of them, but I'll keep giving them a go. The other game I finished is Transistor. I'm on my NG+ play through because I'm really enjoying the challenges they give you. The combat in this game is sublime. It really feels like a great balance between turn based and real time action. Super giant have accomplished extremely well what many Japanese AAA developers have failed at miserably (I'm looking at you Kingdom Hearts and Ni No Kuni) with the pseudo-turn-based action RPG. What else can I say? The music and art direction are gorgeous. The story is intriguing, but I don't think it's done fantastically well. While the relationship between Red and the Transistor were interesting to see pan out, I don't think I ever fully understood the antagonists' motives. Maybe that's my failing, but I found the reading hard when there's a narrator constantly talking over the news articles you discover. Another great game though! I think I prefer it to Bastion.
  12. Gone Home from The Fullbright Company

That box is brilliant. Urgh, £20 is kinda a lot for something I already own but I want it. I really want it.
  13. Gaming News and Reviews Sites

All I can say is never read the comments.
  14. Nuclear Throne: Oh! I accidentally ate my gun.

I adore this game, it's a shame my PC is going a bit funny because I can't play it any more. It's also super hard with a controller compared to mouse and keyboard, but that doesn't stop me from being really excited for the console releases. I think the difficulty is completely intentional, and personally I wouldn't want them to change it. Paid the higher price of £10 for it and I don't regret it. Vlambeer will do well with this I'm sure. I really like the melting guy. If you get the + HP he becomes incredibly powerful because he loses his main weakness, especially combined with Throne Butt which makes the explosions even larger meaning you can chain together kills through practically a whole level. Also crystal is pretty cool but doesn't have the potential the melting guy has.
  15. Other podcasts

Also British accents are good in my ear holes.
  16. Gaming News and Reviews Sites

I don't. I read this forum and browse gaf (although it makes me angry so I try to avoid posting). If something is interesting it's usually on here or a podcast I listen to. I'll use IGN if I'm looking for a release date or something very specific.
  17. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

To be honest I'm starting to feel that way too. The latest INfamous kept me interested, but only because it was really quite short.
  18. Nintendo Network ID Exchange Thread

THAT'S A GOOD POINT! I said I'd look into MK8 tournament and completely forgot about it. I have tomorrow off work so I'll figure it out then (I'm sure it's not difficult - nintendo) and hopefully we can set one up this weekend at a convenient time for people.
  19. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

Interesting you said you "quit" because technically by what I take to be your definition, I quit it too. However I don't really consider high score based games "quittable" because there's always a chance I'll pick it up in a years time and play a bit. It's sort of like Don't Starve or Luftrausers for me. Survive as long as you can and get the high score, which are the kinda games I like to play in short bursts, rather than play through to completion. To add to your anecdote, I actually saw someone wearing Assassin's Creed based clothing. I couldn't believe that someone could be such a big fan of such a mediocre to bad set of games. I've seen Mass Effect clothing, and I understand how people can love those games so much, but AC? Really? I feel like they've become like COD or FIFA/Madden, where people just buy them every year because they know what they're going to get, and they're never disappointed by an incompetent game. The historical part to them always seemed a bit weird. There's some super natural stuff in there and the whole DNA memory thing, both of which to me kill the idea that it's an historical game. It's Scifi science-fantasy dressed in a cloak. I do love how they manage to recreate the image of old cities, but they never manage to get the feel right, which admittedly is quite hard, probably because you can't smell them.
  20. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

I don't even get the draw that the open world ubisoft games have. I find the Assassin's Creed games to be incredibly bland and uninspiring and Watch Dogs just looks like GTA without the fun (although I'm not really a fan of GTA anymore). Why are they so popular? These Ubisoft games are always so safe, they don't try to do anything exciting or new, they just make competent but rather boring games. I find it really hard to believe that people still buy the Assassin's Creed games! I enjoyed Far Cry 2 and 3, albeit for different reasons. I think the only reason I finished Far Cry 3 was because it's the best AAA style game Ubisoft have made for a while. The story is garbage, but the game play and interactive systems were fun. I used it as a playground with guns, and that was enjoyable. The ubisoft game I have enjoyed the most in recent memory is probably ZombiU. However I don't really know if that is "AAA style" it feels more like a middle of the road developer made it rather than ubisoft. They actually tried something new, made a decent game in the process.
  21. Feminism

That tumblr reaffirmed my childhood hatred of comics. The men look stupid in most of them (them damn jaw lines), but the women are utterly ridiculous.
  22. Spelunky!

I might pick up Spelunky again, I find that it's most fun on my Vita. I just find it really demoralising because I usually fail to get past the forest. I think I've only ever seen the ice caverns once or twice.
  23. Spelunky!

I beat the first boss last night for the first time. I'm completely awful at it, but for some reason I just love it. I'm equally bad at Spelunky though.
  24. Spelunky!

I've always associated Spelunky with Rogue Legacy. Both fill the same place in my interest, but I've found I still play Rogue Legacy and forgot about Spelunky pretty fast (in comparison).
  25. Didactic Thumbs (Pedantry Corner)

The "correctness" of English - or any other language for that matter is a really interesting topic. Don't have anything to add, but if this thread turned into that topic I could read it forever.
