  1. Feminism

It's a seductive argument that makes a lot of sense until you actually think about it. It's almost impossible to reduce to logic to a silly degree that it still won't stand. "People in my country go hungry, therefore I'm not concerned about those in another." It's also ridiculous because it implies that something shouldn't be done. I've seen the argument "but male representation sucks in games too." Ok, it does, but how is that a coherent argument against trying to improve the representation of females (which is far worse, but that doesn't really matter for the point I'm making). Relying on anecdotal evidence is actually a fantastic trait to have in an evolutionary context. Unfortunately we didn't evolve in a world full of 6 billion people.
  2. What is the Nadir of the Simpsons?

I agree with you, I think you just put it into words better than I could. My point was that the show is built on that kind of humour, not that it's inherently good or bad. The Simpsons magic is making the reference funny in its own right, then there's the icing on the cake if you know where it's from. Then again, as I said before, just about every episode is based on a movie or TV show. One of the difficulties that The Simpsons writers have is how stupid to make Homer. I think the balance shifted from believable (well the suspension of disbelief is possible) to so ridiculous that it's difficult to watch just like Season 9 onwards. The Futurama "college episode" is so very different to The Simpsons one. They're two different college experiences being expressed and each is funny/insightful in their own right, but The Simpsons episode outshone the Futurama one for me (although Futurama is my favourite TV show ever so that's saying something).
  3. What is the Nadir of the Simpsons?

The answer to the question is season 9, first episode. The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson: the season premier that stinks to high heaven. Don't get me wrong there are some good episodes in season 9 and 10, but this is the point where the characters just degenerate into caricatures of themselves. Funnily enough, that's the same season as Lisa the Simpson. I don't really understand why it starts to get so bad there, the writers hadn't changed which may be the cause, but those writers had some of the best episodes under their belts. So it's not like they were hacks or just plain bad. I'd have to disagree that pop culture references made the Simpsons a bad show. The show is entirely based on pop culture references. Pretty much every episode is an adaptation of something, and some of my personal favourites are based on pop culture referential humor. However they're so funny, because they have that Simpsons charm injected in. Like Homer Goes to College which is probably the best episode ever written. The Simpsons Files was great too, and entirely built on references.
  4. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

I'm like 250 stars off of getting this: Release some games that I want damnit!
  5. Idle Thumbs Multiplayer Calendar/Scheduler

Cool, this is a pretty good solution. Only feeback I have is 1) Destiny should be permanently on there. 2) I answered by reading the OP. 3) I can't find the "comment" for updating the calendar. Probably being dumb...obviously found it on the second link.
  6. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

Hearing the bad guy say "I ATE 'EM!" sent me into fits of laughter. And Reyn constantly saying "Don't lose you're 'ead doe" feels odd. Fun game! If you can get past the PS2 visuals and weird cockney accents.
  7. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

Why is everyone in Xenoblade cockney?! I can't stop laughing every time someone speaks. It's not ruining the experience, but it's turned in into more of a comedy than I was meant to be.
  8. Returned Vita :)

The company may have a record of people who have reported things missing though. It may be worth handing it over to them, although there's always the chance that they would just eBay it. Did you try 1234? (:
  9. Destiny

Apparently Destiny is up for pre-load on PS4 if you pre-ordered it.
  10. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

To me it looked like you can do coop with a buddy, or if you have no buddies, you can coop with the CPU.
  11. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

Quite a lot, but it's not a "standard" JRPG, it's its own thing entirely. And yes, I watched it. SO EXCITED! Looks fantastic. The online coop thing is pretty cool.
  12. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

Against my wallet's will, I bought Xenoblade Chronicles and a controller to play with over the weekend. I'm excited! Hopefully this will be the JRPG to end my search to find a JRPG I like enough to complete.
  13. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

I think I've quit Metro 2033 (Redux). It's kinda just a rather bland shooter, with a cool setting. I just got sick of enemies charging at me. That's not a fun mechanic to deal with in shooters, and it's so incredibly old hat by this point. The stealth sections were pretty fun, I really enjoyed trying to take out a bunch of human enemies without being found, but the monster stuff is tedious. The bullets as currency felt pointless to me. I was never low enough to need to use them, especially as I carried 2 other guns that couldn't use them, rending the whole mechanic null. Might as well have been bottle caps. I wanted to like it, but it's just not for me. For a shooter to grab me in 2014, after playing a billion and 1 shooters, it's got to be something special. Metro isn't bad, it's just OK, and hence I don't really have time for it.
  14. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

    Just in time for D-day.
  15. Nintendo 3DS

Hmm, no region lock would have made me consider upgrading.
  16. Feminism

I understand. It's a shorthand I react to because many of my colleagues that I respect and constantly ask for help or information from are women, and I see the classes that are not devoid of women. Being pushed into those types of jobs sucks, and I'm sure they earn less than the men in those jobs too. Anything I have to say on it is purely anecdotal, but all the women I was friends with in college have become teachers. Which I found a bit shocking, but it may have been that the only way to secure a job out of college is to jump into teaching, rather than do what I did, and spend months living like a bum looking for an opportunity.
  17. Feminism

When you organise it by potential wealth...then you sure have a point (which you even said was your initial point anyway). I was arguing about science in general, which I still think is a valid thing to consider. Edit: Also I did point out that the Engineering department was 90% male - most of those lucrative majors are off-shoots of Engineering. Edit 2: I thought I'd look up some more lucrative degrees: Accounting seems to be moving towards women. Dentistry also has more young women, indicating a shift. Law following the other two degrees, has more young women, although to a lesser degree, and unfortunately once in women don't seem to be allowed to progress as far as men. Medicine is another. Although I can't find any nice data on this, only news paper articles. Let's not forget Vets! which again is becoming more female dominated. Finally, degree popularity by gender (scroll to the bottom to see undergrad). It's actually more similar than I expected. Although the sciences chosen by women are more of the "soft" sciences than those chosen by men.
  18. Feminism

It's probably closer to analogous than you think. Although by the looks of things, it seems more women progress to graduate school (this doesn't specifying Masters, PhD, MD or Professional qualifications, nor graduation). It has little to do with employment rate though, I agree. I'd also argue that a BA or BSc is basically the same in the eyes of most employers (i.e. pretty much useless in comparison to actual experience), unless you're aiming for something relevant to your degree. http://www.theguardian.com/education/datablog/2013/jan/29/how-many-men-and-women-are-studying-at-my-university'>Interestingly, in the UK women are more educated than men That doesn't comment on sciences vs humanities though. I hope I'm not coming across as trying to defend women as having an "easy time" in college. The rape issue is incredibly important, and the stats on that are utterly disgusting. It's just I feel like I have to defend my profession and colleagues, since the whole gender split in sciences isn't terrible any more, at least not in comparison to 10 years ago.
  19. Feminism

In the UK that isn't true at least. I was a biochemistry "major" with organic chemistry "minor" and all my classes were about 50-50 gender split. The building I work in currently is again around 50-50 gender split. Even the group I work in is a 50-50 gender split (now after we hired someone new). I'd also question whether it's true in the US too. Recent data points to ~50% of PhD graduates in sciences being women. Anecdotally, I've not noticed a gender bias in the papers I read from US based research groups (well, in first authorship, last authors are mostly male). However, the Engineering department at my university is 90% male (and thus shares social events with the Nursing & Midwifery school which is 90% female). So clearly it's not perfect...
  20. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

The Pro controller is great! One of the best controllers out there. I use it for both WiiU and PC, and I've charged it once in 4 months.
  21. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

I can see where you're coming from, but as a non-Metroid fan (I've played Prime and didn't like it), the character stuff means nothing to me.
  22. I Had A Random Thought...

I can't sleep on my back. I've had some severe back injuries over the years, where the only pain-free position was on my back. However if I tried to sleep like that, I'd invariably end up staring at the ceiling all night. Now I exclusively sleep on my stomach. Swap!
  23. Feminism

Could you explain that tweet? There there are so many acronyms I'm lost.
  24. Recently completed video games

Fuck, I always forget to go back and grab a tanooki suit. When I get home from work I'm gonna try again.
  25. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

Ever since Bayonetta (which I still need to play, thank fuck it's coming to WiiU) and the gun heels, high heels haven't bothered me.
