  1. Yeah the convenience is the opposite for me. I hate playing on a pc since I have to go to a dedicated room (my study) and be incredibly antisocial. Whereas the ps4 is in my living room attached to my TV. I'd disagree that used console games are a lot more expensive than steam stuff, I can usually pick up a fairly recent used game for £5-£10, although I do hate physical stuff. The sales are getting better though. Often see 50-75% off. I actually spend less on games now than when I spent most of my time using steam, simply because I buy far less games. I don't have a ridiculously long back log either so I don't feel stressed or guilty playing something Ive already finished now. That's my personal flaw though. I can't say no to those sales. The only thing I miss is strategy games which are completely absent from consoles because they'd suck.
  2. Nintendo 3DS

Wait it out. Nothing to lose. Adding up my SNES/NES/GBA library on a wiiu is great for the games I missed out on.
  3. Nintendo 3DS

My WiiU has essentially become a Metroid machine. If I get 1 and 2 I think I'll have every game installed on it.
  4. PL4YST4TION 4

ME! I went back to OlliOlli 1 and it felt so weird not being able to manual between things.
  5. I think about a minuet actually Apparently 35 seconds or more. That can become really grating if you are dying a lot on one boss. I find load screens and cut scenes are more likely to make me quit a game than a difficult boss.
  6. Nintendo 3DS

Sweet, I just picked up Metroid Fusion. I still have 2000+ stars left and nothing else looks interesting. Nevermind, I picked up Super Mario World too.
  7. Not seen anyone talking about OlliOlli2 on here. It's a shame because it's fantastic and I suck at it. I just beat the last level - and by beat, I mean finished with no stars on amateur. In Bloodborne news, people on gaf are complaining about potentially long load times. I hate long load times.
  8. Nintendo announces mobile deal with DeNA

Does Nintendo need brand awareness? I was under the impression that everyone and their mum knows what Nintendo is and who Mario is. If you go a little further, most people have played some sort of Nintendo game at some point in their life. The problem isn't awareness, it's image. They're seen as a console maker for babies by the biggest console audience (boys aged 10-25), which is entirely where their market is focussed. They're ignoring that huge market of gamers who use their phones, and don't care if a game seems kiddy, or have nostalgia but don't want consoles. The cool thing is, Nintendo aesthetics will transfer super well to a HD device that doesn't have the power to put out realistic graphics. The more I think about this, the more I'm excited. I still have a twinge of nervousness that they'll do it wrong though.
  9. Kojima to leave Konami after MGS V

Fingers crossed he does. I'd be really interested in what he'd do without the constrains of Konami and Metal Gear. Edit: I hope we see a Kojima directed movie.
  10. Nintendo announces mobile deal with DeNA

I feel like you're making a few weird assumptions. Firstly, that the mobile games will not be free. Given how the mobile market works, I'm sure DeNA will advise strongly for free games based on microtransactions. I'm more worried that Nintendo will make good games that will ultimately make no money from microtransactions, because good games don't, it's the shitty ones that get all the money. Secondly, and I think most importantly, kids do still care about pokemon. They just care a lot less about Charizard, and a lot more about Greninja. Pokemon is pretty amazing at staying relevant to kids.
  11. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

I'm giving up on Valiant Hearts. Adventure games are just not my thing, and if I find myself irritated at the prospect of doing stuff just to advance the story, it's probably time to quit. I also didn't like how the German leader was portrayed as some weird moustache twirling villain. It just felt out of place against what is otherwise a quite serious story. It also reminded me way too much of the bad guys in Rayman Legends.
  12. I came super close. I then had a moment of clarity and thought "fuck this useless junk." I don't remember a lot of Demons' Souls. I didn't like it anywhere near as much as Dark Souls, and I played it in a really shitty way where I would leave months between each level. It didn't grab me when I killed the first boss like Dark Souls grabbed me (although on my second attempt).
  13. I preordered a physical copy. I never preorder. I never buy physical. What's wrong with me? I think I just did it in the hope it comes a day early Not been this excited for a game in years! Weird, I hate horror games too, I loathe being scared by a game, but I never found the Souls games to be scary at all. They make me anxious and I get all the standard stress responses, but never fear.
  14. Backlog Busters

I've been doing pretty good at chipping away at my backlog. PS+ hasn't helped though, along with getting a bunch of games that you can't "complete." How do you consider those games in relation to backlog? I play Hearthstone a little, and it's not like I'll ever get rank 1 and say "boom done it, I'm the best." So is it in my backlog? Similarly with things like Peggle, I suppose if I got all the trophies, it'd be considered done, but I doubt I'll ever do that. I still play it regularly, so I'm not done with it.
  15. Gaming, rewards and addiction

I was thinking about it, and essentially they are different, but dependent on each other. Flow leads to immersion, although I'm not sure if the reverse is true. Reading all the text in a game like Danganronpa allows me to get immersed, but I'm not sure it's got anything to do with flow.
  16. Gaming, rewards and addiction

That's a really bad ad. It doesn't tell you anything or make you interested in the slightest. Reading the basics of flow is pretty interesting. It's clear that flow is exactly why games like Bayonetta and DMC are so incredibly loved by a small audience. If you can achieve flow in those games, they're masterpieces, but it's tough to achieve the skill needed to get there. I've realised that I've conflated flow with immersion before, and I'm now not entirely sure what the difference is.
  17. I want a nintendo themed CCG. I think my world would implode and I'd become one of those whales people talk about.
  18. Gaming, rewards and addiction

I think that says a lot about the types of game you play, and how you're perceiving time invested. I understand where you're coming from though, as a long time (and now cold-turkey) MMO player, I would log on, do my dailies, weekly, monthly quest/dungeon/whatever and I'd tell myself that it was fun. It wasn't, but it felt like I was doing something I enjoyed because I got a reward. Now I rarely play those types of game, and if I do, it's in small doses. I get my enjoyment out of actually playing, you know, like you're supposed to. Games aren't meant to be a job you do to grind meaningless tasks that aren't fun, they're meant to engage you either by fun or by thought. It's very easy to find games that let you save in 30 min - 1 hour intervals and those take up most of my time, along with games that you can't complete such as Hearthstone or (right now) Helldivers, that only take up 10-20 mins for a play session. To be honest I think you need to change your outlook on what your time spent means to you. If you want to have fun and relax, play a game. If you want to achieve something, don't turn on your PC or console. That's not what games are for.
  19. I'm all for more people buying Nintendo products, I'm just not sure I trust Nintendo not to screw this up. They're good at games, they're bad at pretty much everything else.
  20. Recently completed video games

I finished Counter Spy Yeah it was ok. I liked the style a lot, and the shooting was pretty satisfying. However, the stealth just felt bad, like it had been added in at the end when they made the game about spies. It's just so half assed.
  21. Hotline Miami

I agree with this, so many cheap deaths caused by a dog or shotgun at the end of a hallway, it's much different to 1 where as you said, quick reflexes and skill could save you. I'm constantly hiding behind walls and baiting enemies towards me. When I'm not doing that, it's great, but I'm doing it a lot, so it's only good. I've heard a lot of people saying good things about the story, but I've pretty much given up on that. Oh...and apparently you can pick up ammo in the army missions, but I just can't figure out how. What do the ammo boxes look like and how do you interact with them?
  22. Nintendo have apparently said they're planning to make gaming apps for smart phones. Fuck. I didn't expect this.
  23. Hotline Miami

The levels are too long. That's what's causing my frustration. Otherwise it's pretty fun.
  24. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

I prefer the gamepad to he pro controller. It feels less like my hands are engulfing it. The pro is just a little bit too small.
