Am I the only one saddened by the lack of Skull Girls? That games a great fighting game.
  2. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

Guys. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze came through the post the other week and it's fantastic. Super hard, super challenging, but super fun. It's also a weird Nintendo game as it ignores every fancy thing that's in the WiiU in favour of an awesome gaming experience. I was not once told that I got a stamp, that I should post said stamp to the Miiverse, or whether I'd like to view anything from the Miiverse. My Mii wasn't invited at all. And it was as hard as nails from the off. The only WiiU gimmik they had was the option to choose to play it from either your TV or Gamepad. And I haven't gotten to the weirdest thing yet. The weirdest thing for me - which took me hours to realise - was that if you're playing on the TV with the gamepad, the gamepad shows nothing. It's just a black screen! Nintendo's USP that they must have spent thousands if not millions on developing this hardware, only for a Nintendo-produced game to simply not use it. And it's not as if it couldn't have gone towards something. They could have just put a stat screen there or something, showing your bananas/jigsaws/KONG. But nope. Fucking weird. I guess that me not noticing for so long shows how intently I was staring at the TV. Anything extra on the gamepad would have been a distraction. My main points of ire are this: 1) What the ever loving god is the point of Diddy Kong? Cranky is useful, but Dixie is the runaway star, as she can fucking fly. Cranky's spike jump comes in handy, but so rarely. Dixie's power is always useful. That extra bit of hang time can save you when you mess up a jump, or miss a coin. And then the added extra height too? Why do you exist Diddy? You can only hover. Granted possibly longer than Dixie, but not by much. The only place he's ever needed is at one part where you have to use his water power (which I found out exists near the end of the game) to swim against a strong current. And that's only an optional level. Have I missed something out about Diddy that's amazing? 2) Fuck the last boss is a pain in the arse. He has the smallest damn hit box, which is so easy to miss, and is only exposed when he charges, which he does 3 times, and then repeats the tiresome and long attack cycle before he does it again. And the attack cycle takes ages and is so tedious. and you have to hit him 9 times too. Ugh. And he speeds up every 3 hits. Double Ugh. I do love that I'm still discovering things as I play. That I didn't collect all the jigsaw pieces in my first run through a level means that the designers are cleverer than me. Which I like a lot.

Fair point. By that logic then, the birth of the NES is a super weird thing, as they originally started off as a hanafuda card company, which is something they still make today: Edit: Although it could also be argued that games consoles would exist without Nintendo I guess.
  4. Two Idle Thumbs Up - At the (Video Game) Movies

Hey at least you read the first page. That's better than what I did! I can see a recurring theme here with my interactions with Ben Fair enough! Lol. I wouldn't have known how to reply either, I was just inspired to do something like that after seeing this. If I were to turn a game into a film, it'd probably be Team Fortress 2. The comics are already pretty great at spinning a tale of endless, pointless war between two brothers (and later a third one) over land that's worthless, using a dwindling fortune that'll be gone by the end of the war. The film could do a good job at highlighting the futility of war, draw some political parallels as well as keep it light hearted enough. The 9 mercenaries are also really nicely fleshed out characters too. I'd probably even say do the whole film in steamworks too. Live action would be weird.
  5. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

Not true. What about the joystick? The N64 controller was an innovative beast. (and an ugly one at that)
  6. Two Idle Thumbs Up - At the (Video Game) Movies

Oh right! I see... I blame Bjorn, he didn't play along with my Ace Attourney thing either. He's a party pooper. He poops at parties. It must have been a couple of years ago now, at an indie game dev social, maybe set up by RPS? I can't remember the specifics. I remember that we had a long conversation about exactly that. It was probably the most memorable moment of the night, probably because I was kinda starstruck that I'd met a guy who's actually made a game I know and own, and then make a darn fool outta myself. Anyways, it's a small world eh?

I don't know much about Heavenly Sword apart from the main heroine is modeled on the CEO's wife. Also that early Dante in DMC is modeled after him. I couldn't stand DMC. The combat was solid, but I couldn't stand literally everything else. It was like a committee of dads who knew what was 'cool' and 'hip' and it was fucking shit. Hey man, I played your games. All two of them. Granted only after I'd met you in a pub in London and I had a super awkward conversation with you on how I own your games, just haven't played them. You then dejectedly said 'yeah... you're not the first'. The match three puzzle/joke is still hilarious to me. Every time i see some fool playing Candy Crush Saga on the train I think of that and internally chuckle.

Namco are having a deal on the PSN store. From their facebook page: Pretty decent? Demon's souls for €5 is a deal.

    Fuck me Pac-Man looks creepy:

After a quick google - no, it's not. My bad XD I really love the retro 8 bit levels in Rayman Legends. They're ace.

I finished Killer is Dead. Which actually wasn't bad. Despite the negative criticism that's been leveled towards it's treatment of women in the game. (Which I don't feel like I'm well versed enough on the subject to discuss) The combat is good fun, despite the parry/block system being a bit skewiff (or maybe I'm just too used to Bayonetta's push the stick towards the enemy parry system to be able to get used to another one XD) and the story whilst bananas is engaging and amusing. Part of me wishes he'd stop making games and just direct anime, but the other part of me is looking forward to a potential Killer is Dead 2. This is probably my favorite Suda 51 game to date, although I hear El Shaddai is really good.

Huh I actually remember that bit too, Ucantalas. Maybe I've watched more of that trudge than I remember. The boss fight was pretty cool, but I got the feeling that they more wanted to push along the love lines than any fighting. Coz who wants to see fighting right? Also I suspect that as it's from a light novel, the fighting probably doesn't play a major role as combat is pretty dull on paper. And as the guy's so good why spend budget on a fight people know he's going to win when they can spend it on making fan service scenes with Asuna? (Conversly, I assume that's why it gets shit. The second half apparently has some pretty rapey shit in there, or at least what I can gleam from posts in Sankaku Complex) also from what I can gleam of the second half And screw Log Horizon, we all know the best MMO is the Greed Island arc in Hunter x Hunter.

You're assuming that the blood is actually going to hospitals. You never know, this could just be the beginning of a controversial CE of The Evil Within.

Ahhh that explains it. Thanks Also, another deal - Ys Origins is 75% off on steam. http://store.steampowered.com/app/207350/ I really liked this game, it's a great addition to the lesser-known Ys Series, and everyone should check it out.

Redline and Summer Wars - hells yes. I saw the new Sailor Moon! I never saw the original, so I don't know how it compares, but oh boy has it aged. And not in a hilarious way like the first 2 JoJo arcs, but kinda in a cringey way. Also the 3D CG bits were disappointing. They must have so much money for this project, it's a shame that they decided to change the transformation scenes into 3D. Particularly because it stands out so darn much and is so darn ugly. Saying all that, there was a charm to it that makes me want to keep on watching it. Partly because of it's fame, and partly because I want to see how they handle this scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DU9sQi_wnQ Anyone seen Space Dandy S2? I thought the new episode was fantastic. I can't wait for the next one.

For what it's worth Zeus, if you're watching FMA, watch FMA: Brotherhood instead of FMA. I say this because Brotherhood follows the manga, whilst the original FMA series goes off into the deep-end and makes their own ending and story really early on, and it's pretty crap. If you're going to watch FMA, watch Brotherhood first, as it's a complete retelling, but copying the manga. Then watch the old FMA. for what it's worth, I couldn't connect with FMA at all. I didn't like the main character or the setting or anything. :/ Steins;Gate is excellent. It's a bit slow at first, but give it a couple more episodes and you'll be hooked. I'd say to stick to Steins;Gate before jumping onto anything else as the plot gets confusing if you're dipping in and out of it. Also Baccano is on hulu: http://www.hulu.com/baccano

Sure, but I think you could level that complaint at most if not all action anime. Also AOT was and is super popular. Even before the anime, the manga would sell up to a million copies per volume, (which doesn't sound like much, but it's huuge in comparison to other manga sales). The numbers AOT are getting are even rivalling Shonen Jumps' manga sales, which is pretty much unheard of. The anime attracted a crowd that would usually never be interested in anime, especially given it's timeslot (like past midnight). So whilst it's acting like there hasn't been an action anime before it, it wouldn't surprise me that for a lot of viewers (at least in Japan), this probably was the first action anime for them, or at least in a very long time. Keeping it like that garnered it's popularity, and it's sales. All I'm saying is whilst that's a fair point, it's almost definitely a concious decision that the author/director made when producing the anime. And it paid off, as the AOT DVD holds the record in Japan for having the highest number of preorders. My main complaint about the anime was them tarting up Mikasa.

I hear that he's recently released more dlc for it too. And maybe for free? Edit: in relation to Thomas was alone

YOU'RE COMPLETE GARBAGE. I guess people could easily sit down and watch the latest films (the "you are ..." series) and enjoy it without any prior knowledge, but some of the intricate details will be lost. IMPORTANT INTRICATE DETAILS.
  20. General Video Game Deals Thread

I'm not sure if this is an error on steam/Daedalic's part, or whether I have got this ludicrous deal because I already own all three games, but Deponia: The Complete Journey is 90% off on steam right now (£3). http://store.steampowered.com/app/292910/ I really really really loved this game. it's a funny, heartwarming and original setting that i completely digged, and when I finished it, I wanted more.
  21. anime

I really don't understand the popularity for this anime. I find it total garbage. I watched a good 5 or 6 episodes, and it was total garbage. The things you asked in the spoilers I was also wondering, but just assumed that they're too lazy to explain this at all. I stopped watching after a murder arc was concluded. I feel bad for crapping on an anime that other people enjoy. Do please take my scorn with a pinch of salt. I personally think it's because of the frame of reference and knowledge and understanding of tropes and memes and stuff are so wildly different between the eastern and western cultures that when first introduced to anime, it all seems so fresh and new and original, and that's what sucks people in. Certainly after a while of watching anime, the magic wears off as the more common tropes get internalised, but I still prefer the eastern tropes to the western ones. I also feel that the way manga is published and serialized helps massively in keeping the series interesting (basically by a public opinion poll every week, if a particular series is falling behind, it gets dropped (although this isn't always the case, depending of the type of manga it is)). Although it's also a double edged sword, especially for fighting manga, where it usually becomes very generic as they fight to stay published.

Follow up: A quick google suggests that Psycho Pass, Knights of Sidonia and Shinsekai youri are very similar apparantly. I haven't watched them. (sorry for the double post)
  23. anime

I for one quite like AOT. I know a lot of my friends disliked it because they said it was slow, but I just think that's because they read the manga, and it's a pretty easy and fast read, as it's not that word heavy. I dropped the anime because I was on holiday and had already read the manga. It's also kinda hard to recommend something like AOT because it's pretty unique. I would say if you liked the sense of despair and suprise/suspense, Kaiji is really great. I enjoyed it a lot. It's about a guy who's in massive debt and gambles with his life to get out of said debt. It's ace. Hunter x Hunter is another show that's really accessible and fantastic. Whilst it's a shonen (it's aimed at young teenagers), it's different from usual shonen affair, as it's not all about being the best at something, but it's really long running (episode 137 came out today), which can be a turn off for a lot of people. The animation is constantly fantastic throughout, and the story and characters are deep and involved. If you're going to watch this, there are two Hunter x Hunter's out there, one which is about 50-odd episodes long, which is the old anime which aired in 2000's and ended because the author went on hiatus. They then re-booted the series in 2011, and it's fantastic. Durarara! and Baccano are also two shows that are fantastic, filled with suspense and mystery. Baccano is the spiritual prequel to Durarara!, and is one of my favourite anime. I'd really recommend it. It's super confusing until about half way through the series, where everything beautifully fits into place and is tied up nicely. It's also mainly set in the 1930's, which means everything is mobsters and stuff. Super stylish. Durarara! is written by the same author as Baccano, and is set in modern day, Tokyo. It's also really good, but Baccano is just much better. Fuck I just remembered how great the opening to Baccano is. God damn. Now I want to watch Baccano again. I had others, but just remembering how good Baccano is, it seems useless to mention them. as Twig said, Mushishi is good, but completely different from AOT. Uhhhh Evangelion is great, if not a bit slow, Madoka Magica is great, if you can look past the saccharine, I really liked Jellyfish Princess, but is again completely different from what you're previous shows are like, and a new anime this season, Tokyo Ghouls is also something that you'd like, as it feels similar to AOT in certain aspects. Go watch Baccano dude. Oh, and before i forget, Crunchy Roll is a website which streams anime legally and is really good too, as well as free. Baccano is probably on Netflix/Hulu, it's pretty old. Failing that the DVD box set for baccano is probably quite cheap.
  24. The Idle Thumbs 10th Anniversary Committee

We could print it on a pillow? Then it could go on the couch. Although I dunno whether people would be comfortable sitting on Jr. Mint's face. Edit: Or even better, one of those huuuge sumo bean bags. They must do custom decals right?
  25. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

Oh man, in dollars it's worse: 1,544.7 hours on record / 35.3 hours last two weeks, This account is worth $6210.51. If all games were bought on sale, it would be $2290.66.Is that in Pokemon X/Y? I think that's the worst of the series. Even worse than Sapphire and Ruby, and that was rubbish. Team Flare is the worst. I really couldn't understand the main villan at all. I think I stopped shortly after.
