Speaking of ethics, I've been spending a lot of time over the last week thinking about how one goes about minimizing harm/hurt while also having to take actions that are going to inevitably cause harm, even if you've done the "right" thing by your own ethical compass. Even then, I prefer to acknowledge that I've caused harm, even if I felt like ultimately I couldn't have made any other decision. The "never acknowledge wrongdoing/mistake" bullshit is pretty fucking high on my list of things deeply wrong with humanity though.

‘Angry’ man with loaded AR-15 terrifies bystanders in quarrel with black protester at Confederate statue Thankfully the police intervened and gave the man tips on how to more comfortably carry his weapon in the future.

The lady and I were long distance (6 hours apart, so a manageable distance for periodic weekend trips) for about 6 months towards the beginning of our relationship. It's definitely a thing that can be managed and maintained, but it does introduce other, unique stressors to a relationship on top of all the normal sources of stress. *hugs* hope you make it through your day okay.

Um, TB was the guy ranting about his IQ on message boards a decade ago, right? I'm not convinced that he was ever a person capable of being reasoned with.

Ah yes, that's incredibly familiar to me. I also learned typing on typewriters. Funnily enough, the typing teacher got new computers before the computer teacher did, because she was much better at school politics than the computer teacher was (who was kind of a grouchy old curmudgeon). I also remember having to learn all the text commands for DOS Word, even though I knew graphic versions of word processors existed because I sometimes used the computer at the vet clinic my dad worked at (which, one of the other vets was a massive computer nerd, so their clinic probably had the most powerful PC in the county in it just because it gave him an excuse to build it). At home we also had a kind of private Internet for farmers and ranchers called DTN that delivered custom information about weather, markets, etc., over a satellite connection, which was still a more interesting machine than most of what we had at school. It seems really weird now that it ever existed as all, fitting into this short window of time when technology could support it, but the Internet hadn't reached a point to have destroyed the need for it yet. Our most advanced typewriters then had little LED screens in them that let you type out ~80 characters before committing them to paper, so you could scan for typos while writing without having to use whiteout. Fancy tech.

Obligatory Comical YouTube Thread II: The Fall of YouTube
Bjorn replied to pabosher's topic in Idle Banter
Video is probably NSFW (no nudity, but plenty of content some people would find questionable). So today is apparently masturbation day in Japan (because of some oddity in how 7/21 is pronounced or written in Japanese, it makes an easy pun). To celebrate, Tenga made a series of short videos about a Power Ranger like super hero who helps people help themselves -
Has anyone ever made any gif/gif slash fic?

I feel so old. The computers I learned on in school didn't have hard drives, we ran everything off dual floppies, one to run the program and one to save data to. To be fair, those things were already outdated when I was using them, but it's all we had. And now I'm going to go stand in my lawn and wait for some disrespectful whippersnappers to wander by so I can yell at them.

That was really interesting, thanks! Fascinating that they did iterate with other ideas including racing and combat arenas, and that it was the soccer ball that ultimately ended up being the most compelling element. I wonder what the compensation package is like for launching on PS+. I had assumed it had to be pretty good, since someone is literally sacrificing their highest sales period of a game's lifecycle. But that made it sound like maybe not as great as it could be.

KINGArt_Marco, the message was an invitation to checkout their exciting new kickstarter and fill out a survey so they can best serve me. Very exciting. I'm assuming it was spam, maybe I'm special in some way though. Newish account, no post history, etc.

That seems to be a thing this year, there were a lot of disgruntled people in St. Louis about this year's pride, both in how trans people and people of color were treated, and I know in how the police and corporate sponsors were favored over actual members of the community.

So on a completely different topic, but one very, very related to the ethics of the enthusiast press, I found this interview with a fired columnist for Guns and Ammo magazine to be fucking fascinating.

Congrats on the upcoming spawn undermind!

Confirmed, TB is a baby who likes easy baby games because he needs them to run at 60FPS.

Oh man, I'm amazed at how good this is. Like the balance of speed, physics, contact, verticality, etc., is all just sublime. Like, I haven't cared about a sports type game in forever, and we spent 2 hours tonight messing around with it. That said, I don't honestly know that I'll play a bunch more of it. I'm glad it was on PS+ for free. I still don't have a big interest in playing through an entire season or something, I'm just really glad I did take the time to download and try it. But I'll for sure keep it in mind for when we have people over for game days and stuff. If I was still in college with dormmates or something, this thing would be played all the time. Plus, I'd love to see these folks take their design and do something besides soccer. Give me some sort of weird, objective based racing game or something and I don't know how much time I'd sink into it.

Woah, I hadn't looked at this thread in awhile and totally missed the marriage photo. Congrats Mington!

Well, it's done, everyone who needed to be told has been told. Her older sister ended up being a real badass about it after a couple of conversations, not just open and supportive, but excited to learn that there's components, and even a secret life, about her sister that she has the opportunity to learn about now. Younger sister was supportive. Her parents are in radio silent mode now, we'll see how that plays out. Told my parents as well, who were totally fine. No matter how it plays out with her parents, she still feels a huge relief to just be done, that she doesn't have to worry about screwing up and accidentally saying or posting something that will make people start wondering or asking questions.

Oh man, I...fuck, the people who work for Gawker in that thread are actually making me decide to never read their work again, and there's a few people in there I like. Where was your public outrage when the piece was published? Fuck you all.

My birthday is in the middle of March, and so I think almost every year it fell during Spring Break. So no in class parties, but it was pretty awesome in college for every spring break to feel like a birthday gift to me. Also, happy birthday (and pre-birthday) to the July birthed!

I know that saying "I told you" is almost always unproductive, but man, does Koretzky ever deserve to hear that. And speaking of comments sections, I enjoyed making it three comments in before closing the tab. Hoo boy, a gamergate supporter accusing someone of making mountains out of molehiles.

The people she's primarily worried about are her parents and her two sisters. There are aunts, uncles and cousins who are also likely to have pretty shitty reactions when word gets to them (which is likely), but other than one aunt, the lady is pretty okay with just not interacting with any of the extended family for a long time if they say anything crappy. But it's the possibility of her mom and dad walking away from her that is most potentially hurtful. There's no fear of how my family will react. My family is just as rural and conservative as her's, but has been dysfunctional as hell for decades, where as hers is like American Pie and Grandma perfect looking (from the outside). Because my family has put eachother through so much crap, it's just like, "Okay, no big deal." Plus I've got a step-brother who's gay, and he's taken my dad to drag nights at a gay bar before, which apparently my dad had a great time at (I so wish I could have been there). My family's just crazy enough in the good way to be okay with other people being different.

Thank you for that, seriously. Her older sister had a positive reaction to the bisexuality and a neutral reaction to the non-monogamy, but also acknowledged that there are several other family members who are likely to have very negative reactions. She came out to her older sister first because she thought that was the best shot at having someone in the family on her side when the rest of them find out. Hopefully that is the case. So next up is telling the rest of them.

The really ridiculous thing about all that is that the women I know who are most interested in and fascinated by sex are also the most hardcore feminists I know. Obviously theyre passionate about things like consent and rape culture, but they also love learning about sex, having sex, the science of sex, etc. Actually, their knowledge about and love of sex blows all the mras/puas out of the water.

The lady outed herself to one of her sisters about being bisexual and non-monogamous today. She's terrified that it's going to be the beginning of the end of her relationships with most of her family. But for a variety of reasons, she can't hide this stuff anymore.
