  1. Didactic Thumbs (Pedantry Corner)

The original is grammatically incorrect, but the correction is just awkward as hell too. Contextually it would have been better to go with "our current project" and establish that it is me and my wife doing the work earlier.
  2. I Had A Random Thought...

I'm sorry that you hate beautiful things. It must hurt so much to be pained by joy and wonder. It makes my heart ache for you and all the other sad jackasses complaining about Ghostbusters on the Internet.
  3. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

"They're being uploaded through the darknet." dammit
  4. C'mon, it's SOOOOO much better if this is the truth. It will always be the truth now, in my heart.
  5. Holy shit! That makes the original Mario so much darker. And if that's canon, then what are all the similar bricks in later games? Could the curse not be reversed, the land was freed but those changed stayed changed forever, billions of people locked forever in stone, freed only in death when a plumber bops them with his head? Are the mushroom and fire flower the spirits of the dead you are absorbing? Edited to add: I like how Mario is only (maybe) the hero. Like, maybe he's just a sociopath that likes murdering brick people, and he accidently rescued the princess. Dude's mute, so who knows what his motivation is.
  6. Feminism

Oh, hey, Twitter finally acknowledges that the cesspool of abusers it has facilitated for years is actually making people leave the service, so they should probably do something about it. Isn't this like, the third time in as many years that Twitter has shamefully acknowledged the harassment on it, only to do jack and shit about it? The language seems a bit more forceful and contrite, but fool me once, and all that jazz.
  7. Thanks! That looks like the one that is most similar to the G9x for their current lineup. The latency isn't something that concerns me, the G9x is actually on my office computer and rarely gets used for gaming. I just prefer gaming mice even for my office work because of the extra buttons and button placement, as I use it for macros to automate some of my tasks. That's the same price as the G600, I'll see if Logitech will exchange that instead of the G600. If not, I'll take the G600, sell it and pick up a G602.
  8. Life

If you're only using one, what about just using a cheap Bluetooth headset for the audio in one ear? That's what I did when I was still jogging. On my previous phone, I think I had to download an extra app to get it to put audio out from my podcast player to the headset, but that was years ago and maybe isn't an issue on newer phones.
  9. I downloaded the demo on the iPad, but only messed with it for a few minutes. I'd give it another shot on PC, though I agree it's not a game that inherently appeals to me, in part because of the aesthetic design.
  10. Any one familiar with the current crop of Logitech gaming mice? My G9x is dying, it's developing a problem where it's automatically double clicking everytime I click. Which is apparently a common flaw on these, the spring wears out. It's one of the favorite mice I've ever had. It might be repairable, but I'm not sure it's something I want to mess with. It's barely still under warranty, and Logitech offered me a G600 MMO mouse as a replacement, which just looks awful. That panel of buttons right where your thumb is will never get used by me. I really just want something that's comfortable and has an extra 2-4 buttons on it.
  11. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

That's interesting, and not something I've really considered before. I even went through a phase like that, describing myself as unemotional, when in fact I was an emotional wreck and couldn't face that.
  12. Non-video games

Ah, I didn't realize that bit about time eating into other player's turns. Interesting. I'm not particularly interested in it being accessible. The people I usually play tabletop games with are all deeply experienced, and when we've got novices, we have other more accessible games we can play with them. What I want is a co-op game that is actually challenging for a group of experienced gamers, without needing to fall back on heavily modified rules (which is what we do for Arkham Horror now).
  13. Non-video games

I never would have believed that a Sons of Anarchy game would interest me, but your brief summary there piques my curiosity. Speaking of transmedia games, Xcom: TBG comes out this week. RPS has a rundown on the single player experience, with the multiplayer review coming next week. He seems to have come away from it with a quite positive experience, but what he actually describes doesn't sound all that interesting to me when I try to expand it to four players. But maybe the timed element on the app solves some of the issues I have with co-operative board games, where the person who thinks they are the smartest just tries to run everyone else's turn.
  14. Movie/TV recommendations

I was about to link and make a snarky comment about the Poltergeist reboot, until I actually read the article and thought about it for a second. It is still likely to be terrible, but this is one horror movie where revisiting the menace of the television could be interesting given the number of screens in the average American house now.
  15. I Had A Random Thought...

    Grrrrrrrrrr....
  16. That looks super up my alley, but I'll probably wait until it's out of EA. I'd like to see more games explore the mental/emotional stress of the kinds of horrors games put you through. Even if they aren't deep explorations, just trying to model it at all is a good step.
  17. Feminism

Holy shit, I really didn't have a frame of reference for what you've mentioned in passing before. I'm really glad you made it through it, and are in a much better place now. Also kitties are the best
  18. Farscape

I can see how any one episode (particularly early ones) could lead people to think that a lot of the actors are average to poor, but it's the long arc that proves just how stunningly excellent and dedicated each person is to their character and craft. Apparently Black also has the super power of being able to summon a single, large tear on command whenever she wants, or even multiple times in a row if a scene needs re-shot.
  19. Feminism

Point or not, thank you for posting it. You've mentioned before about harassment, but never in that detail. It's something that is increasingly on my mind. We will hopefully be shutting down our current business and opening a new one by the end of the year, and my partner and I's roles are going to reverse. I'm currently the owner and face of the company, and in the new business she's going to be the owner and face of it, and the nature of this business and its social media presence is almost guaranteed to invite harassment of her. I'm trying to think now of what to do months in advance to minimize potential harm as much as possible (getting all of our accounts as secured as possible, trying to scrub certain old screen names from the 'net as much as possible, deleting old accounts she no longer uses, locking in common screen names she has used across multiple services to keep people from using them, etc.). Your post was a kick in the pants that it's something we need to prioritize over the coming months before going public, because it's easy to forget about with all the other work that needs done. Sadly it can't be stopped, but at least we limit the harm (of course I'm sure we'll miss some vector anyways).
  20. Sports

Not a year goes by where I don't end up in at least one conversation (offline) where someone thinks that literally no NFL team pays any taxes at all, and see multiple more like that online. I have endless faith in Americans to misunderstand even basic things. And yeah, the stadium bullshit that goes on is easily the most ridiculous tax funded crock the NFL is involved with. That has been worth literal billions of dollars over the last several decades.
  21. Sports

It's misunderstood by a lot of people. The NFL organization itself qualifies as a professional organization (like a professional organization for lawyers, or doctors, which are non-profit organizations. Just in this case billionaire sports team owners). Each team is still an individual business that pays taxes. Now, its still bullshit, because the NFL is not really like any other professional organization at all. And it allows the owners to shift certain types of funds into the NFL that might otherwise be taxable, but it's not the crazy tax windfall it is sometimes portrayed as. At least that's my understanding of it.
  22. Other podcasts

Crossposting from the ethics thread, but people really should listen to the last ten or so Joystiq podcasts. Each is a one-on-one interview between Mike Suszek and another staffer about their relationship with Joystiq.
  23. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Exciting, I hope it goes well them! On the same subject, I've been listening to the goodbye podcasts with all the staff. Its amazing. Joyful, insightful and a bit heartbreaking too (Jess Condit really got to me). Seriously, everyone should listen to them.
  24. Sports

I assume you're talking about Sapp. The complicating issue is that he's also been accused of assault against the prostitute, and he has a prior history of being arrested/investigated for assaulting a woman he was partying with. Is an immediate firing, within hours, appropriate? Probably not, but the NFL's not going to fuck around with an on air personality the way it would with a current top tier athlete. The athlete can still make them more money. I think the Lynch stuff with being potentially fined for his hat and not wanting to do interviews also shows the ridiculousness of the league though. Willing to hit a player with hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines over interviews, while Goodell and the owners have stonewalled the press for many years on actually serious issues.
