I took your advice and played Risky's Revenge! Actually, I was craving a 'vania game when I read this and had completely forgotten RR was in my Steam backlog already. Completed over a few days, about 5 and a half hours total (which seems about an hour longer than the steam reviews I read - I dicked around and looked for secrets a bunch, also got lost a few times). It was really enjoyable, despite some frustrations with the controls and some questionable level design (backtracking through the dungeon with the eye switches, man). Honestly, I think I enjoyed it largely because it was so compact. I tend to enjoy metroidvanias at the outset, but get worn out on them when they get to be a certain length. If the map is too large and the secrets too many, I find it far too taxing to keep track of everything - and I have to keep track of everything because that's just how I play. On the other hand, Shantae's map was fairly easy to keep tabs on (even if the map screen was kind of terrible), and I found most of the backtracking pretty leisurely. It helped that there were only a handful of powers to pass the game's obstacles, too. (Side note: this game has so many boobs. http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/388795947223741563/5B26DD0450A2CC3167CAC71B1FEC4D2FE9AA5407/ ) Here's hoping Pirate's Curse goes on sale tomorrow.~

It also depends on the quality of the posts. Megathreads were banned in another forum I visited because they all degraded into in-jokes, spam, and shitposting, which just turned away newer members. There seems to be more of an expectation here that people say something halfway worthwhile? Even when things get in-jokey it doesn't go for pages at a time (that I've seen), because that just gets obnoxious.

Way to have a really horrible predatory gay dude stereotype, One Punch Man. It's generally agreed upon that the series goes downhill after that, but I was one of the weirdos that still liked it quite a bit? I'm planning on rewatching it soon, so maybe my opinion will change. It doesn't hurt that I freaking love the music, and some of the themes in the second half are great.

This might be a case of being influenced by who I watched it with (girlfriend haaated it), but I didn't think the Babadook was especially great? Or rather, I thought it was a pretty effective drama, and the actor who played the mother was fantastic, but the horror/suspense was pretty flat. I wasn't expecting it to shock me but I didn't even find it unsettling (disclaimer: horror is subjective, not trying to invalidate anyone else's take). I forget if I already posted about this or not, maybe my opinion has changed since then. I saw Mazerunner: Scorch Trials and uh... hmm. I actually enjoyed the first movie, I thought it was pretty inventive despite its uneven pacing and some of its more cliched Lord of the Flies-isms. This is just... taking an interesting premise and turning it into another fucking post-apocalypse thing. Worse, the theme of "taking the fight to WCKD" is so reminiscent of that other big YA trilogy that it seems like they're really trying to turn this into Hunger Games: For Men. Or maybe the books were always like that, I don't know. All that aside it was a perfectly serviceable action movie with some good performances and effects. Also, drinking game: take a shot every time another Game of Thrones cast member shows up.

I feel like I still count as a new member? I tend to feel the same way OP does whenever I join a new forum or whatever. I guess the only difference here was that the tone of the forums is somewhat informed by the podcast? So I felt more comfortable expressing certain views than I might have elsewhere because it felt more like everyone was on the same page, somewhat. That said, I haven't listened to a Thumbs episode since like... ep 205? I really need to catch up.

I found Mr. Show super hit or miss but enjoyed it's looseness. Bob and David is striking the same chord for me, except I actually laughed out loud a lot more I think. The best Show sketch, I think:

The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

These guys play some fantastic experimental rock, sounds somewhere between Battles and Jaga Jazzist to me. Also the new Chrome Sparks is great but of course it is. -
Oh! If you're into reading subs, Adrift in Tokyo is really cozy watch. Maaan I really need to rewatch that.

Probably an obvious recommendation, but Lost in Translation fo shizzle.

DJ Phil Fish? Whaaaa?

I loved the older Tomb Raiders for their platforming, environments, and sense of mystique (probably because I was younger and they were some of my earliest PS1 purchases). The combat was always terrible, though.

Get a load of this codger.

Pretty dull One Punch episode. It kinda seems like they got all the funny crazy shit out of the way early and now they're trying to build a story around it? I like where it's going with building up Saitama as this huge unknown threat though, should lead to some quality comedy.

Membership card has another bonus, which is giving you a guaranteed time warp at the beginning of every level. Makes it easier to chain combos from one level to the next. -
I don't see what everyone sees in that movie ...

LOL I must have seen that movie forever ago, then. Seems like an obvious thing to miss. Appleseed Ex Machina has a legit as hell soundtrack, tho. -

Also, why was everyone pissed off that the teenager turns out to be a girl? What was the actual point or impact of that twist? I never understood that. -
100% agree. MGSV is the first Metal Gear I've actually completed since 1 for this very reason. I tried most of the others and found their systems to be a clunky, confusing mess (2 was alright, I just hated the setting).

So I've discovered! Finally beat it. Hadn't gotten to his final phase before, went in with 1 HP, was sweating bullets. Laser is a freaking godsend. Hard mode seems... hard. -
I said this in the Overrated Classics thread but it seems more appropriate here: DISCUSS. Also, while searching for something related I found this list, which is really really good and sums up a lot of my misgivings with some well-loved Ghiblis (I would've put Nausicaa higher, though). http://filmschoolrejects.com/features/studio-ghibli-movies-ranked.php

Hmm I see this blowing up so I'm just gonna take it to the anime thread where it's more appropriate. :x -
Is Spectre at least less pointless and plodding than Quantum of Solace? Christ that was a bad movie, let alone a bad Bond.

Dunno if it counts as a classic being from merely 10 years ago, but Howl's Moving Castle is a piece of shit. Fantastic animation, imaginatively crafted world, all wasted on an infuriatingly dumb and uneven story, and the blandest fucking characters. I'm not even kidding, I enjoyed Tales From Earthsea more because at least that didn't piss me off with its utterly misused potential. -

So what palette meta are you all rocking? I was running Aqua but I switched to an OldnCold build and it's working out pretty well. I just unlocked the 20th palette and I still haven't beaten area 3.
