  1. I just listened to a little bit of totalbiscuit's new rant, and it's kind of weird how he's slowly turning around on certain issues in a way that sounds kind of apologetic, but with bad faith. He kept saying that editorials and "agenda" driven articles and criticisms are necessary and interesting but should be separated and clearly noted, away from the "objective" mechanics focused criticisms (???). It just seems like he's trying to keep his opinions on thematic content wrapped up in a journalistic quality argument  in a way that on the surface gives thematic criticism a fair shake while still relegating it to a lesser form of criticism. He's created two sides to his argument that are both defensible: you can't say that he's being unfair to thematic criticism because that's his "personal preference" but then wraps the opinion up in an absolute statement of how things should be, which he thinks is defensible because it's "objective".

It's just really confusing and I don't understand how you can adopt an opinion like this without significant cognitive dissonance.

  2. Hey fuck it. Who cares about Zoe Quinn, or if she's a bad person or a good person. My problems with gamergate never centered around the ethos of this one person, it centered around the exploitation of a person's image to achieve unrelated, orbital goals and coopting platforms to keep the cogs turning in a monstrous, destructive, regressive, cheetostained steamroller.

  3. Is it accurate to categorize nazi Fascist sentiment as reactionary if the status quo at the time was democratic? Just wanted to know if reactionism is dependent on change from the status quo or just change in general.

Relevant because I wanted to figure out if the weird fascist element of gamergate is the product of reactionism or if reactionism fuelled an existing sentiment.

  4. I have never had a quote more scream bullshit to me than in my required Continental Philosophy course when I read Heidegger's masterpiece of a sentence: "May the worlding of worlds be the nearest of the nearing that nears."

I actually enjoyed some of the writers in that class, and don't view Continental Philosophy with the same disdain that many of the other students I went to school with did, but Heidegger and Hegel can both seriously go fuck themselves.

It might be the translation but Sartre has similar weirdness. "Good faith wishes to flee the 'not-believing-what-one-believes'. Bad faith flees being by taking refuge in 'not-believing-what-one-believes'."

    Like damn JP what

  5. The pun would be nice but no-one will ever have ello.gov unless the US federal govenment uses ELLO as an acronym. Which they might, now I think about it.

  6. It's kind of screwed up how art focused on form usually ends up perpetuating stereotypes, and how defending the form turns into defending the stereotypes. Talking to a lot of gators is revealing to me how they have predetermined ideas for how games "should be", but don't realize how that same mindset perpetuates attitudes baked into the form. If you say all games "should be" about being a hero, invariably all games become about wish fulfillment, implying helplessness about certain people (usually women) and self importance. If you say games "should be" about fun, then it must ignore all semblence of serious argument or idea. It's interesting to see how this sort of infantile view of art informs the worldview of gators, informed by an objectifying cultural background.

  7. I might regret saying this (as if that has stopped me before!) but I don't think those tweets flatter either of you. Honestly I've flirted with unfollowing you a couple of times, Cine, because you're absolutely uncompromising on race in a way that I find really confronting, and while I understand it's because I'm less aware of my racial biases than, say, sexism, it feels like you'd attack me just as soon as the openly racist dickbags you're currently angry at. Becoming socially aware is a process of growth which takes time, and it often feels like you, and many people like you, get really impatient with people not far enough along that process, encouraging them to run backwards away from what they perceive as a state where people become always angry at everything. It's understandable, no-one has that much patience, but that doesn't mean it's not real.

From Mike's perspective, it seems like he's trying to see the good in his customer base, because if #gamergate is at all representative of his audience, and he doesn't want to make things for fuckwits, then he'll need to get a new job. It's certainly the thought I've had over the last couple of years weeks - why should anyone make video games if you're making them for gamers?

Not disagreeing with anything you said here, but at the same time you participated in trolling this one gater a while back. Granted this specific person probably had no intention of engaging in an argument in good faith, and the discussion I had with him following it took a long time and a lot of energy and went nowhere. But I still can't help but think that there could've been a way of showing people like him how wrong they might be without looming like a bully (I was trolling him too but yknow...yeah).

  8. Idk that seems like a reasonable response for someone who might not have followed this from the beginning, and may not understand that the hellish monstrosity of gamergate has consumed the allegiances of reasonable people by coopting arguments and retconning messages (like the self serving political entity it is). Doesn't make it right to immediately take a centrist stance and not to dive deeper, but assuming this person genuinely came into this without context, he would basically be the victim of the weird gamergate spin machine and the pure vitriol that exists.
