So it sounds like you agree with me then? I originally said "I would probably still think it is stupid for any person in any society to be offended by a word without understanding why they are offended by it." which seems fairly in line with what you are saying. And to be clear, I have tried to be careful not to state what people should and shouldn't do. I'm just some dude spouting off my opinion. Just because I think being offended by the word 'fuck' is stupid doesn't mean that I think people shouldn't feel that way. I just think they are being stupid for feeling that way. But it's okay to be stupid. I'm being stupid right now. That doesn't mean that I shouldn't be stupid, just that I am. Plus I'm a Vulcan. Well, I guess you could take a Valium.

I think I kind of have to agree with Tycho on why we use words like 'fuck' instead of 'frig'. It's basically to say "fuck you" to people who are offended by it. Which is ironically a lot stronger of a statement to make than the one I originally made. So does that mean all of us that like to use the word 'fuck' inherently think it is silly to be offended by that word?

Twig, I pretty much agree with everything you said. I just think it is stupid for somebody to think that other people shouldn't use words that they find offensive unless there is some kind of logical reasoning behind it. I think the whole 'bitch' and 'fuck' examples Twig gave pretty much sums up what I'm getting at. Gormongous, the French extremist horror movie thing is an interesting example. I guess I still see the foul language issue as a slightly different kind of thing because with foul language, you don't necessarily have to participate. However, when watching a movie with a friend, you have no choice but to participate so I think it would be perfectly reasonable to expect your friend not to put those kinds of movies if it offends you.

I guess I see the two as separate things entirely. Spiders make me uncomfortable, this chair I'm sitting in makes me uncomfortable, but I am not offended by either thing. To me, taking offense to something is along the same lines as thinking that something is morally wrong. So I imagine that a person that is offended by foul language probably thinks it is morally wrong to use that language. That is the part I find stupid. But please correct me if you think I'm drawing the wrong conclusion. Using your example, I doubt you are actually offended by naked bodies in every context. You would probably not be offended by a naked body in an art gallery but maybe you would in another context.

I see what you're getting at but isn't there a difference between being uncomfortable and offended? And I'm not saying people that are offended by foul language should jump in and start using that language, I just think they shouldn't give a shit about other people using that language if they can't even understand why they are offended by it to begin with.

While I could go and study linguistics and sociology to educate my nerd brain I don't think it would change my opinion on this much. I would probably still think it is stupid for any person in any society to be offended by a word without understanding why they are offended by it. But as you hinted at, I am glad people like this are all over the place because it sure is fun having words that I can use and they can't because of the self imposed barrier they have put up.

Nowhere in the bible does it say that you can't say fuck, shit, damn, asshole, bitch, son of a bitch, douche, or super douche. I get the whole "don't use the lord's name in vain" crap but I never understood exactly why I was supposed to be offended by those other words. It's funny to think that I was once grounded for saying "ass". What a motherfuckin' waste of a grounding. I didn't even learn my lesson.

After making some decent progress on this game last weekend, my first impressions are that it is really fucking awesome. For some reason it reminds me of watching Animaniacs as a kid. The writing and voice acting are amazing and this might be my favorite game yet. Since there are so many different rooms and spaces for each character (as opposed to the more distinct and closed off areas in FOA), I'm not going to attempt to go into great detail on every step that I took. Instead I think I'll just mention all of the awesome shit I'm seeing in this game and some of the more interesting puzzle stuff. This game had me right from the start. From the choking bird at the very beginning to the dialog between the tentacles it is just oozing with personality (and ooze). From what I had heard previously I didn't expect this game to have much to do with Maniac Mansion but I immediately started noticing the references. I love that Bernard is the main character, that he is friends with the two tentacles, and that the two tentacles more or less have the personality I would expect them to have based on their representation in Maniac Mansion. And the hamster coming to tell Bernard about the tentacles was pretty awesome too. I'm definitely glad I played Maniac Mansion first because I think it adds a lot to the experience. And goddamn, the voicework is so good. I would have gone apeshit over this game if I had played it as a kid. The comparison made to Saturday morning cartoons earlier was definitely apt. Once the intro credits finished rolling I finally gained control of Bernard and made my way down to the lab through the secret clock entrance. After Bernard freed the tentacles, purple went off to take over the world and I had to try to stop him by using a time travelling toilet. This left Bernard, Hoagie, and Laverne stranded in different eras with no way to get back. Once I gained control of Hoagie, I found that he had ended up in colonial times near an inn (i.e. the historical version of the mansion) that was run by Red Edison. After receiving battery blueprints that Dr. Fred flushed through the time toilet I headed into the inn to locate Red and do some exploring. After heading inside, I found that the founding fathers were staying at that same inn. I spent quite a bit of time talking to each of them and in the process found out that Hoagie might be one of my favorite video game characters ever. The way the founding fathers are portrayed and the way Hoagie talks to them is pretty damn clever and funny. That Betsy Ross conversation was probably my favorite one and Hoagie's recommendations for the flag were awesome. I think I went through that loop enough times to see every one of Hoagie's ideas and holy shit that must have taken a lot of time to come up with that many. I also talked to an asshole horse. And did Jake Rodkin do the voice for Ben Franklin? I almost expected him to start talking about puffins at one point. As far as puzzles go, I gave the battery blueprints to Red and obtained a number of items as I was exploring the area. At one point I was talking to George Washington about cutting down a cherry tree (which he refused to do since there were no cherry trees) and realized that I had red paint and a kumquat tree. So in typical cartoon fashion I ran out and painted the kumquats red to trick him into cutting the tree down which ended up freeing Laverne in the future. I also ended up finding a bucket (which I filled with water) and a brush and tried to clean the carriage but saw that I needed to obtain soap. Then I messed around with the cat in the upstairs bedroom for a little while but was never able to get it to leave the toy mouse alone long enough for me to grab it. Shortly after this I switched back to Bernard. I think by this point I had given two of the battery components to Red. Because I had played Maniac Mansion, I found the present time period to also be pretty entertaining. My favorite part was talking to Ed (I think that was his name?) about his stamp collection and hearing his vague recollections of what had happened to his hamster five years earlier (I'm glad that outcome became canon). I really liked seeing the 'normal' side of the Edison's in this game since they were possessed in MM. I also got a kick out of the depressed novelty item guy trying to kill himself with a fake gun and seeing how gullible Bernard was when talking to the car thief. The present time period overall isn't quite as interesting as the past but I'm still really enjoying it. I didn't end up making too much progress with Bernard since I was mostly exploring and talking to people but I did figure out a few things. First, I was able to switch out Dr. Fred's coffee with decaf to get him to open the safe. However, he kept shutting the door too quickly so I still need to figure out how to get the contract out of there. I also found that I could use my dime on the vibrating bed but it looks like I need another one to completely free the item stuck under the sleeping dude. I tried blasting green tentacle's music to shake the dime loose that is stuck to the floor in the lobby but didn't have any luck. I think that is about where I stopped playing. I like this game. A lot.

When I was a kid I really wanted to make a flame thrower out of my Super Soaker. I'm glad I never tried that.

Man, I feel like I'm losing my mind this week. I just can't seem to find a single spare second to do anything and the constant multi-tasking is making my head spin. It's frustrating to be at my wits end and not be able bitch about it to anyone because the only person I would bitch to is even more stressed out than me. Then again I did find the time to write this post so there's that. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCKKKKKKKK!!! Okay, I feel better. Nothing like an all caps f-bomb with exclamation points. Please kill help me.

Some people just feel the need to pick a fight. His testosterone levels are probably all out of whack.

So, this game looks pretty fun.

Yes. I hate how hard I have to search to find good wired keyboards and mice these days. I'm sure I'm not gaining much by doing this but is it too much to ask to make models available in both wired and wireless versions?

Old Altair in AC Revelations. He actually moved like a really old dude!

I'm pretty sure Hellen Keller didn't stalk. FRAUDS!!!

Wireless is still very inferior compared to hard wired connections. I have an average packet loss of at least 10% which ends up affecting the speed quite a bit since it has to resend those packets. Granted, this will be much better if you have a good router and good wireless card and might not even be noticeable if you have really fast speeds to begin with. For me though it is quite an improvement when I switch to hard wired.

I've only ever seen Pitch Black. After watching that movie I didn't have any desire to watch anything else having to do with that universe.
-
Really? People thought Pitch Black was really good? I could see how maybe some people might think it was okay but I thought it was pretty bad. Oh well, who am I to judge people's tastes. (But seriously? Really good?)

Just use cables rated for use inside walls and don't exceed 300 feet and you'll be fine. If you have an attic route it through there and then drop it down your wall wherever you want to put an outlet.

That sounds like possibly the greatest thing ever.

Idle Thumbs 121: (I Know You're Having Fun But) I'm Still Working

Oh shit, you're right. My bad. -
elmuerte you know how to cut right to the core.

You guys have no idea, this place is hell. It is usually sometime in mid-October and sometimes later that we finally stop getting highs over 100 degrees. And high's in the summer easily top 115. A/C is vital.

Man I am absolutely in love with this Hoagie guy. I just spent five minutes talking to Betsy Ross and his flag suggestions were hilarious. I think my favorite was when he recommended a demon head with red, white and blue flames.
