Idle Thumbs 142: Unmasking the Brain Burglar
Zeusthecat replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Candy Land... Probably my most played game of 2013. (Sadly, I am not being sarcastic at all.) -
He has it in the movies but I don't recall hearing about it in the books. I could be wrong though. It's been awhile since I read them at this point and some of those small details escape me.

I am very calmly raging thank you very much. The Tolkien universe is very near and dear to my heart and my brain just has a hard time accepting a story about a dude having magical Nazghul powers. Edit: And let it be known that I am not claiming my complaints to be rational at all. It's just like, my opinion man.

I don't think I recall hearing a single mention of a shield anywhere in The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, or Lord of the Rings. They just blocked shit with their swords I guess. This game makes me kind of sad. Sure it might be a decent game but I hate to see Middle Earth getting bastardized with supplemental stories and characters that never existed in any of the original Tolkien works. I'm not necessarily opposed to taking some artistic liberties on already established characters and stories but I just don't see the point of creating entirely new shit when there is still plenty of untapped potential from the books (maybe not The Silmarillion though if Chris Tolkien still has a say). I'm probably being a stupid nerd fanboy with this but after seeing the damage done to the Star Wars franchise over the years I'm a bit apprehensive.

I totally agree on the music. Even with the small amount of content I've seen so far I have found that the music is probably the best out of any of the LEC games I've played at this point. And I know I already said it once but goddamn that banjo segment was awesome. Fuck Guitar Hero, I want Banjo Hero now. And to add just a little bit more to my perception of the game, I think I've reached a point where all of my initial apprehension regarding the art style and voicework is gone. This game looks and feels pretty damn good and I think I'm okay with it ditching the aesthetic of the older games now.

So this is my favorite thing in a long time: http://kotaku.com/when-dance-parties-in-skyrim-go-too-far-1507453805 I laughed a lot more than I probably should have.

I finally made two key discoveries last night. First, after talking to the skinny barber dude again and hearing him tell me I would need to beat him in a duel, I figured I would try to use the white glove on him to see if that would work to initiate some kind of old fashioned cartoon duel. Sure enough, Guybrush slapped him in the face with the glove and we headed to the field near the grassy knoll to have a duel. At the start, I was able to pick one of three guns to use in the duel. So I picked one and was quickly defeated. After a few more failed attempts I noticed that I could pick up the banjo that was in the case behind the guns and upon doing so the real duel began. The dueling banjo segment that followed was pretty awesome but it did end up taking me far longer to figure out than it probably should have. It was clear right away that I needed to basically repeat whatever riff he threw at me but for the first dozen or so attempts, I mistakenly focused squarely on the timing of when he hit those off-notes and ignored the fact that he was actually hitting specific notes. Each time I failed I was convinced that I had just missed the timing but after repeated failures I eventually noticed that Guybrush was plucking different strings based on where I clicked. At that point I realized that that was what I needed to be paying attention to when the other dude took his turn. Once I had this realization, I wrote down each sequence of notes as the other dude played and repeated them back until I finally got far enough to get him to go into his ultimate solo (which was fucking awesome by the way). Seeing that I had full control of Guybrush at this point, I quickly figured out that I could pick up one of the guns that was still on the ground and figured I'd try taking a shot at him. The resulting shot destroyed the barber's banjo and he immediately conceded that I must be a real pirate since I was capable of being such a dick. He then agreed to join my crew and upon returning to the barber shop, I found that I was stuck right where I was before with no new items from the previous segment. Through a slight stroke of luck, I made my next discovery pretty quickly. As I was trying various things to try to reach those scissors, I at one point tried to pick up the paperweight while I was sitting in the barber chair. When I did this Guybrush said that he was too low to reach it, so I used the handle to elevate myself and tried again. This time Guybrush kicked the paperweight off of the book which ultimately caused the big Scottish pirate to go into the next room to get something he needed to cut my hair. That finally gave me the window I needed to elevate the chair high enough to grab the scissors that were stuck in the ceiling. Now that I finally had the scissors (and paperweight), I headed back over to the undergrowth. As I expected, I was able to use the scissors to cut through the undergrowth and that led me to a clearing with a bunch of items strewn about. Shortly after I entered the area, a big ass python came down and ate me. Once I picked up all of its stomach contents I found that I was able to mix an ipecac flower with some maple syrup and, after giving the snake the mixture, I was barfed out into some quicksand. And this is about where I stopped. I have to say, it felt pretty damn good to finally start making some progress again.

Welcome to my self imposed life. They're not that bad once you get used to them.So I guess I'm relapsing on my commitment to not talk too much about nasty shit on these forums. I apologize in advance for what I'm about to write and just know that I hate myself for it. Edit: As I clicked the post button I felt an immediate sense of regret. Maybe this should have gone in the intoxicated thread.

SIM cards make me irrationally angry.

Glad to hear someone else is a fan of Trigun on these forums. I fucking love that anime so much and, as I mentioned earlier, it is one of only a few anime that I've ever watched. I felt like the voice-overs and English translation were excellent compared to DBZ at least, but I definitely still noticed some of what you mentioned with the animation quality. I still feel like DBZ was a far worse offender though. Parts of the Frieza saga looked like they were drawn by a 6 year old.

Yeah, you're probably right. It's still irritating though.

The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS
Zeusthecat replied to Henroid's topic in Video Gaming
Wow, thanks for the excellent breakdown Bjorn. Would you kindly drop that same knowledge on all of the other video game forums on the internet? -
One thing that did always bother me was how inconsistent the animations were throughout the various sagas. Some of them were really well done with close attention to detail and others looked like they were just lazily slopped together.

DRAGONBALLZ! It is one of my favorite shows ever. I wish I had gotten into more anime in the past but I haven't seen much besides DBZ, Trigun, and Tenchi Muyo (all of which I love). Favorite character: Gohan Favorite episode: The one where Gohan flips out after Cell crushes Android 16's head Favorite movie: First Broly movie

Yeah, I've definitely spent enough time to where I have several different tasks I need to accomplish broken down. There just seems to be a piece I am missing somewhere. My main focus has been on the barbers. I have to beat the big guy at the caber toss to get him on my crew and I need to find something valuable for the shorter bald guy (and I don't recall at the moment what the other barber needed). I feel like I've picked up everything there is to pick up so far and none of it suffices for the bald barber. I also haven't been able to figure out any way to rig the caber toss so I can beat the big dude. So I'm at a complete dead end on both of these right now. I'll double check with the taller skinny dude to see what he was after. Other things that I've identified are: I need to get the scissors out of the ceiling (likely for the undergrowth blocking Danjer Cove) but I can't get the chair high enough to reach them without the barber stopping me. I tried to wait till he was looking down but he catches me every time. There must be some way I can get the lemonade from Gary Coleman. I'm not sure what this would be for but I'm guessing I'll need it. Fat chickens on the beach. No interactions are working with these little demons yet. Restaurant that requires reservation. Haven't found it yet and the guy promptly kicks me out every time. It doesn't seem like I can do anything with the drive thru yet either. And I'm suspicious of the drain pipe and mud by the building but so far these are useless too. I can't get into the Cabana or pick up any of the items and the dude doesn't take any kind of bribe. There is still a building with a locked door that I can't open. I found that I can use the voodoo doll in the voodoo hut to hurt some dude. I'm not sure where he is though, the room he is in doesn't look familiar. I need to find some instructions so I can use the lights at the stage area. And I spent a lot of time searching the backstage area but all of the items there can't be picked up or used with anything I have. I am starting to suspect that I am missing an item somewhere because I keep running across new things in various areas that I haven't noticed before. Or maybe I'll get lucky and figure something out as I ponder all of the possibilities throughout the day.

The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS
Zeusthecat replied to Henroid's topic in Video Gaming
I don't know. I don't think trademarks are typically granted for such generic words and plenty of people have had their trademark applications denied in the past because it was too generic or already part of the common vernacular (and their trademark application for the word "saga" has been suspended since they went after Banner Saga anyways : http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2014/01/21/king-com-comments-on-candy-trademark.aspx ). Even with the fucked up trademark laws we have, I don't see King ultimately getting the trademarks for either of those terms. I think this is just them using bully tactics to get what they want since a lot of these smaller companies probably can't afford to go to court and contest their claim. Considering everything I don't think this makes any sense at all and if there is anyone with half a brain in charge at King, they will realize this is doing far more damage to their brand then the "damage" that would have been done by these other "infringers". -
Another hour and a half spent and I'm still stuck. That mega monkey is kicking my ass so far.

The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS
Zeusthecat replied to Henroid's topic in Video Gaming
My sentiments exactly. What's stupid about the whole thing is that they haven't even been granted the trademarks yet. By going through these shenanigans, they are probably just making it harder for themselves since they are putting a big spotlight on how ridiculous their claims are. -
I agree wholeheartedly. That climax with Gohan was the pinnacle of the series for me. It's embarrassing to admit but that moment where he loses it after Cell crushes Android 16's head almost brought me to tears. It was a beautiful moment. The Bardock special and Trunks specials were both really great in my opinion. I also really enjoyed The Dead Zone, Tree of Might, and the first Broly movie. Unfortunately, they ruined Broly's character with the two follow up movies. And the one that features Hitler coming back from hell was the 12th movie where Vegeta and Goku have to do the fusion dance to defeat Janemba in the afterlife. I thought that one was pretty enjoyable too if for no other reason than getting to see fat Gogeta bouncing around and farting.

I'm glad to see you two are getting along.

THANK YOU! (except the Android 18 part, robots aren't to be trusted) Edit: Not to you Twig, to Ucantalas. Although DB was pretty damn good.

Twig............ Just calm down and take a Valium. Congrats Twig!

Awww, come on. Then we would have never had Gohan.
