Somewhere in my brain, I feel a little bit of sympathy for people that unwittingly say shitty things like these and then react poorly to getting called out for it on a place like Twitter (although that sympathy isn't there for the shithead type of people that do it habitually). I'll be honest, what Troy Baker said is the type of thing that I might have said as a joke in the very recent past and thought nothing of it. And if someone called me out for it in a Twitter type of format, I would have most likely reacted in a similar manner and thought of the other people as over-reacting. The only reason that isn't the case any more is because I just happened to join this community and over time, was fortunate enough to get a lot of really good perspective from many different people on why these things are harmful and how my personal perspective in some of these areas was lacking. There are a couple of unfortunate things about this situation. One is that Twitter exists to amplify everyone's inane thoughts to everyone else in the world. And for some reason, a lot of people seem to not be able to grasp that spur of the moment random thoughts that you might normally say to a close group of friends or a smaller community take on a hell of a lot more weight when they are posted on a service for millions to see for all of eternity. As frustrating as that is though I do still feel some sympathy for people when they do stumble and then immediately have a bunch of people jumping down their throats and telling them how offensive they are being, but also doing so in a 140 character format. So yeah, these people should know better than to just impulsively post whatever they are thinking at any given time, but at the same time, I think it only exacerbates the problem to have millions of voices shouting this person down in bite-sized tweets. We were discussing how hard it can be for some people to admit fault in another thread and when it comes to this specific situation, I can kind of understand how someone's gut reaction would be to get defensive, not feel inclined to apologize and then get the fuck out. I'm not saying he is in the right in any way but I don't think he's necessarily an evil shithead for this either. And that is the other unfortunate thing about this situation. I don't know Troy Baker and I've never heard of any kerfuffle involving him before this, but because of this slip up he will forever be labeled as a shithead by a lot of people. There is a very real possibility that he is a shithead, and maybe there is stuff he's said/done in the past that I'm not aware of, but it is highly likely that he will forever be condemned by a lot of people just because of this one fuck up. And it's pretty clear he realizes this. It's just unfortunate that there isn't a clear avenue for people to actually give him constructive criticism and perspective like I've been able to get from Idle Thumbs forums. Sorry if this is a bit incoherent. I don't mean to say Troy Baker is in the right and I don't mean to say that people dogpiling on him is wrong. I just wanted to lament how frustrating it can be to watch this type of stuff go down in a cesspool like Twitter. Nobody seems to learn anything and it just ends in people often needlessly turning other people into enemies if they display any errors in judgment.

Yeah, I've definitely been loving PvP in this game lately. As much as I've loved playing BF4 multiplayer, the PvP in Destiny just seems to work better with my playstyle. My K/D ratio is way higher here than in BF4 and I think it's because of the years I spent playing Halo 3 and working with a system that has more mobility and that gives you enough health to actually react to getting shot at. I still really enjoy Battlefield but there there is a lot less room to react to things and maneuver around once someone trains their sights on you. Last night I had a rapid 10 kill void spree while working on the Thorn bounty and it was just the best. Love PvP.

Ugh. I've definitely known plenty of these types and I always wonder if they have ever stopped for two seconds to actually think about how stupid that line of thinking is. And unsurprisingly, there seems to be a very strong overlap between that mentality and the world view that a lot of right-wing folks seem to have. I'll definitely concede that this can get a little hairy when it comes to two people debating different points of view. If you have directly wronged someone, I really don't think it is that hard for most people to recognize. I think the only challenge there is usually just getting past your own sense of pride. But when it comes to actually debating or having an ideological argument with a person I think that's kind of different. Hearkening back to the vegan thread that Gaizokubanou mentioned, most of that was just (heated at times) debate (and also a trainwreck).
-
Yeah, that's why I said there are obviously exceptions. As long as you have some semblance of common sense it should be obvious which party should be apologizing in your example. And is this concept really that hard for people to grasp? Are so many people really so far up their own asses that they are incapable of understanding how their actions impact others?
-
Isn't that the type of stuff though that we're all supposed to be taught from a very early age? Recognizing when you hurt someone's feelings or did something bad and learning to say "I'm sorry"? I'm not really disagreeing with you, just expressing my frustration that such a basic and obvious thing that you would think would be reinforced all throughout childhood is so hard to put into practice for so many people.

I will never understand people who don't have the ability to admit they are wrong or own up to shitty things they may have done. Generally speaking, I feel like if someone goes through the effort to call you out for something you said or did, there is probably enough of a kernel of truth there that it is worth acknowledging (obviously there are exceptions). And honestly, in most situations like these, what does a person really have to lose by admitting that maybe they were wrong or misguided? Wouldn't that actually make them look like a more mature, reasonable person in the eyes of most people? In John Bain's case, maybe his primary viewership would see apologizing as some kind of weakness but I like to think it would ultimately help his image in the eyes of most people. It is frustrating that he can't fucking see that. Pride is a weird and fucked up thing.

Despite my steadfast commitment to not obtain any new games until I finish my backlog, I heard the most beautiful siren song coming from this game and just had to boot up my Playstation app to start downloading it. I don't know if I should feel regret or excitement. Probably excitement.

Idle Thumbs 219: Idiots Laughing
Zeusthecat replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Our computer lab teacher didn't give a fuck about anything and clearly hated his job. There were no restrictions on our computers at all and we naturally took full advantage. The games we installed and played regularly included: Gobman (another Pac Man knockoff that was actually really good) Worms 2 Diablo Grand Theft Auto 2 I think our "teacher" even played some of these games with us. It was great. -
Thanks for the offer! I might take you and Jon up on that if I see you guys on after I get to the final stage of the bounty. I think I still need to add you to my friends list though. I'm having a really great time working on this Thorn bounty. I only had time to do 3 or 4 PvP matches last night but CussedCayuse was kind enough to join me and watch my back while I was trying to be all sneaky/shitty with my void shotgun. In those few matches I managed to gain another 200 points and am about halfway done with that portion of the bounty. I normally don't use my special or heavy weapons much at all in PvP but since I don't have a void primary I've been having to rely exclusively on those plus my grenades and melee. It's been a little weird getting used to the different play style but I at least managed to keep my K/D ratio between 1 and 1.5 and ended my last match with 19 kills and a 1.36 K/D ratio. And every single one of them was a sweet, delicious void kill. This has also been my first experience using my Defender subclass in PvP and it is hilarious how many people just can't resist trying to rush in and shotgun me or beat me down. Every single time I drop my bubble near an enemy, they stand outside for a few seconds staring me down and contemplating whether it would be a good idea to join me and without fail they just say "fuck it", charge right in, and get punched into purple void mist while my armor of light keeps me from getting so much as a scratch. And I cackle like a maniac every time.

Thanks Jon, I'll let you know. Hopefully I finish the pvp portion tonight or tomorrow.

I'm sorry but what exactly is the purpose of this thread? I get being curious about whether or not a well-liked public figure was secretly a shithead or worse. But did you really create this thread thinking we are all gonna come in here and post all kinds of juicy gossip about a well respected industry veteran that just fucking died? If this is a joke, it might take the cake for the worst joke. If not, then fuck off with this nonsense. It has no place here.

Games that I come back to on a somewhat regular basis: Minecraft Destiny Battlefield 4 Super Mario Bros 1, 2, 3 and Super Mario World Super Mario 3D World (I've somehow passed the 100 hour mark on this one and will probably keep revisiting it for years to come) KOTOR Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2 Diablo 3 Borderlands 2 Pokemon Rainbow Six Vegas Journey

Thanks! I might just go that route then and team up with randoms so I'm not bothering other people who don't need it. The multiplayer part isn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I only played two games last night and did really terrible in the second one and still somehow managed to get to 49 points. So far I've been using a void Party Crasher +1 shotgun and The Dreamwalker rocket launcher. I'm tempted to switch over to my void fusion rifle though to give myself a little range. And because I get into this terrible habit of just rushing into groups of enemies like a mad man whenever I have a shotgun equipped.
-
I finally got my Thorn bounty last night and am on the 'kill with void damage in multiplayer' phase. So far it doesn't seem too bad. For those of you who have a Thorn, is the final phase with the special boss solo-able? I'm guessing not since it has the epic modifier.

Against my better judgment, I'm going drag out our little Dragon Ball Z discussion just a tad (lot) bit further. As I was driving home last night, I was thinking about that movie/show timeline graphic (yes, pathetic, I know) and I think I've come to the conclusion that it is kind of bullshit and just doesn't work for several reasons. First, as Twig already mentioned, they apparently never go to Namek in the alternate timeline because Goku shows up in time to defeat the Saiyans before Piccolo or anyone else is killed. After this (according to that timeline), World's Strongest, Tree of Might, and Lord Slug all happen, followed by them somehow defeating Frieza even though there would have been no reason for them to go to Namek. Maybe Frieza came to Earth instead, or maybe they had some reason to head to Namek after all that anyways. Who knows. But I think what really casts suspicion onto the validity of either of those options is that in Cooler's Revenge, Cooler has his own little version of the Ginyu Force that they fight throughout the movie. I think the existence of Cooler's Armored Squadron implies that even in that timeline, they had fought Frieza's Ginyu Force before defeating Frieza. So in this alternate movie timeline, not only would there have had to have been some explanation for how and where they fought Frieza, but there would also have to be some justification for how and why they would have come across the Ginyu Force. They only ever showed up in the main series because Frieza needed some new scouters after the Namekians had destroyed the last of theirs. I think the final nail in the coffin though is Vegeta. There were a very specific set of circumstances that caused Gohan and Krillin to team up with Vegeta on Namek to begin with. Now, with that having never happened in the alternate timeline, there would have to be some other reason for them to have teamed up with him or ever even seen him again for that matter. And to make it even worse, he has the ability to go Super Saiyan in The Return of Cooler which implies that not only did he somehow still manage to come back and team up with the good guys, but he even went through his training and eventually attained Super Saiyan status. The only problem with that though is that in the main series, he gets a chance to see Goku fighting Frieza as a Super Saiyan and is then further tormented when he sees Super Saiyan Trunks show up a little while later. It was only when he saw that both of them were Super Saiyan that he really went nuts with his training and finally attained it himself. But in this alternate timeline he wasn't around when Goku transformed to defeat Cooler for the first time and the Trunks stuff never happened up to The Return of Cooler. So for this timeline to work, they would have somehow had to have still faced the Ginyu force, somehow had to have still defeated Frieza, somehow had to have still teamed up with Vegeta, and Vegeta would somehow had to have attained Super Saiyan status (oh yeah, and Goku would have still had to have somehow ended up on Yardrat and learned the Instant Transmission technique since he uses it in The Return of Cooler). There's just too many holes. Trying to tie these movies into any kind of alternate timeline that still somehow hits the major points of the main timeline just doesn't work. The only possible way out of some of this is if King Kai's ability to use the Instant Transmission technique somehow came into play. In the main series, when Goku teleports to King Kai's place to try to find New Namek in search of a new guardian, King Kai recognizes the technique and admits to Goku that he could have taught him that move. So maybe all of this stuff could somehow work if they used King Kai's instant transmission right after the fight with the Saiyans to go all over Namek getting the dragon balls and avoiding Frieza. Then they revived their friends, teleport back to Earth and face the events of World's Strongest, Tree of Might, and Lord Slug, then go back to Namek to defeat Frieza who is probably just waiting for that 120 days for the dragon balls to come back. While Goku defeats Frieza the rest of the Z fighters and Vegeta finish off the Ginyu Force who maybe ended up showing up to keep Frieza company while he was just sitting around waiting. Then all of them except Vegeta teleport back to Earth and the events in Cooler's Revenge happens. After this, Goku had been teleported around by King Kai enough that he figures out how to do the Instant Transmission technique. Then Vegeta shows up again because he's bored and wants to be around the good guys since they will always pose a good challenge. He is driven mad by Goku's skill and finds his way to Super Saiyan. And then the events of The Return of Cooler happen. Basically, it's Friday, there's not a lot going on at work right now, and I'm just sitting here daydreaming about Dragon Ball Z. I hope you enjoy my long wall of absolutely ridiculous bullshit. -
I'm pretty pleased with all the weapon changes. It seems like they touched on just about every major contentious weapon and buffed/nerfed exactly what needed to be buffed/nerfed. Somehow I'm sure people will still scream and yell about how these changes are going to ruin Destiny though. And it will probably be fascinating.

Maybe I'll try to join you guys on one of your next episodes assuming my setup is good enough for me to not sound like crap. I've been leery of trying to commit up to this point because my house can get rather noisy with the kids and everything. But if it's late enough at night (after 9:30ish my time) I could probably make it work. Now that you mention it, I'm not sure I recall you ever saying much of anything about DBZ here or on the podcast. I'd be curious to hear your take on the franchise. -

Maybe cause Frieza goes to Earth instead because Piccolo is still alive and he caught wind of Earth's dragon balls from eaves dropping on Vegeta. Okay, I think it's time for me to stop now. -

I just want to point out that in that parallel timeline in the image you posted, it shows Lord Slug taking place at the same point where they are fighting the Ginyu Force in the main series. Which is exactly around the time Goku shows up on Namek. Which is really what I've been trying to get at. In this fucked alternate movie timeline, Lord Slug takes place at the same point in the main timeline where they are all on Namek. And that image is freaking awesome. Thanks for sharing! -

Use Gohan's hair as your guide! In Tree of Might (the movie right before Lord Slug), Gohan already has that stupid bowl cut that Chi Chi gives him right before they get in the spaceship to head to Namek. That means that even Tree of Might took place after the Saiyan battle and right before or possibly after Krillin, Gohan, and Bulma left for Namek. The concept of Super Saiyan was first mentioned by Vegeta around the time he was sneaking around Namek trying to pick off Dodoria and Zarbon. Then, when Goku lands on Namek and Vegeta sees how awesome Goku has gotten from his training in 100x gravity, he makes the observation that Goku must be a Super Saiyan. I'm pretty sure it's right around this point in the story that Lord Slug would have taken place. And really, most of the locations in the movies don't really fit all that well with the corresponding timeline in the main series. For instance, in Fusion Reborn, Goku and Vegeta are both dead throughout the whole movie and fight Janenba in the afterlife while everyone else is fighting on Earth. Meanwhile, in the main series, Vegeta is brought back to life pretty quickly after sacrificing himself to try to kill fat Buu and there was never any real period of time where Goku and Vegeta were both dead together. Same goes for Tree of Might. Gohan has that stupid bowl cut which he got after they finished their fight with Vegeta, and yet throughout that movie, they are fighting alongside Yamcha, Tien, and everyone else that should have been dead at that point. Gohan's hair is the key to everything. I knows my DBZ. -

I finally got around to listening to the latest episode and quite enjoyed it! Regarding Lord Slug. If I recall correctly, this movie actually took place in the timeline shortly after Gohan, Krillin and Bulma landed on Namek and right around the time Goku lands after training in his space ship in 100x gravity for 10 days. This was at the point in the main DBZ story where Vegeta had started to allude to the concept of Super Saiyans but a few dozen episodes before Goku actually transforms for the first time which explains why his "Super Saiyan" transformation didn't involve the golden hair or anything like that. I don't think they had fully settled on what exactly "Super Saiyan" meant at that point in the story so Lord Slug just had Goku do that weird transformation where his hair stood up and he lost his pupils. This movie will forever hold a soft spot in my heart though because I watched the version with the Disturbed/Deftones background music about 2 dozen times with my best friend at the time. To this day, every time I hear "Stupify" I think of that Super Saiyan scene and how awesome it seemed at the time. It's too bad Funimation only ever did versions of Lord Slug and Cooler's Revenge with that style of background music because they did a decent job at making those shitty movies just a little less shitty. Unfortunately, after searching for awhile, this is the best clip I could find of that scene. So nostalgic. -
Wow. I mean I get wanting to show her as younger and less experienced but she is clearly already at a point where she has shown enough competence that Aramaki is willing to trust her and bring her on board to begin with. It seems like a major disconnect that she could be that competent but at the same time so dense and shortsighted.
-
Oh man, that sounds super frustrating. So is it like this from the outset or is there some kind of actual plot element that justifies that dynamic? I got the impression from SAC that Kusanagi had the utmost respect for Aramaki and I don't really recall her ever doubting any of the decisions he made.
