  1. Life

I'm fine with teachers being strict, setting clear boundaries, and not putting up with shit as long as they are fair and consistent about it. But I have an issue with teachers who just can't keep their cool and resort to yelling or just being mean to students. Growing up and going to tiny Seventh Day Adventist schools, we unfortunately had a few of those lunatic abusive teachers that would unexpectedly fly off the handle and start screaming at students for super minor shit. The worst of them all though was my 3rd through 5th grade teacher Ms. B. As punishment for one of the more disobedient kids, she enclosed his desk in a giant refrigerator box for 2 months to put him in "isolation" from the rest of the class. He wasn't allowed to talk to anyone and every recess he had to pace back and forth between two trees while the rest of us played. She saw another kid spit on the ground outside once during recess and made him fill up a cup with his own spit as punishment. Then, when The Simpsons was exploding in popularity, she would punish anyone she heard say "Doh!" by making them write "I will not say Doh!" 200 times. But sometimes we had the last laugh, like in 4th grade when she got light-headed, collapsed, and pulled a hot dog out of her purse and started eating it. (all of this stuff actually happened and I'm not exaggerating one bit here, this teacher was literally satan) I have no idea where I'm going with this anymore. I guess I just really wanted to reminisce about horrible, fucked up childhood experiences with private education. Thinking about Ms. B, yeah, my daughter's gonna be fine and her teacher's probably not all that bad at all. I swear though, I could write a novel about Ms. B. So many fucked up stories with that teacher.
  2. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I don't think the Waluigi's mean what you think they mean. But then again, maybe they do! But seeing how things have progressed on this page, it may have been a premature Waluigiing.
  3. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I completely agree with this. I know people don't want to be giving cultural appropriate or feminism 101 lessons all the time and I'm sure it gets super tiring; but of all places this is the place where having some patience and taking the time to try to educate others when they are asking honest questions actually has a chance to yield some results and change some opinions.
  4. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I actually kind of agree with what you're saying here and I wish we could do a better job of fostering these kinds of discussions/debates instead of getting frustrated and talking down to the people that don't agree with the majority. I don't necessarily agree with some of the opposing opinions that you and others like Ninety-Three bring up but I appreciate hearing a different point of view and reading through the ensuing discussion.
  5. I Had A Random Thought...

Do we really even need the letter Q? It's clearly the worst letter in the alphabet and K, W, C, and U can all come together in various ways to accomplish everything that Q accomplishes.
  6. I Had A Random Thought...

Way too many e's and u's.
  7. I Had A Random Thought...

Queue is the worst word in the English language. Probably even worse than infrared. From now on I am going to pronounce it as "Kwayway" purely out of spite.
  8. Cartoons!

Yeah, I guess it doesn't look all that great. I can't even think about that Meeseeks episode without starting to shake with laughter though. I haven't seen something that struck me as that funny in quite a while. I literally sat in bed for a half hour after watching it trying to stop myself from laughing.
  9. Cartoons!

I started watching Rick and Morty. At first, some of the humor seemed a bit juvenile but after a few episodes the show has grown on me a ton and my love for it was cemented after seeing the Mr. Meeseeks episode. They just nail some of their concepts so well that it makes it easy to forgive any missteps.
  10. The Official Video Game Music Corner

That was really good! Keep up the good work.
  11. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

And likewise, there should be room for someone with a good reputation around here to be allowed to make a random, innocent observation without people trying to read between the lines and call them out. I don't see how it is in any way productive for us to have a page and a half of arguing about the deeper implications of a post like that.
  12. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I do think we could stand to give each other the benefit of the doubt a bit more and not blow a little random aside like that into a full blown issue though. Especially when it's a post coming from miffy.
  13. Life

My daughter started first grade today. Based on idle chatter we've heard from other parents and our own observations, it looks like our daughter has the "mean" teacher this year. She started off by immediately yelling at some of the kids because they took their backpacks off and then shut the classroom door in the face of several parents who were waiting to give her bags of classroom supplies (which we are obligated to bring because school funding has been cut to the point where parents are expected to donate all of the necessary classroom supplies or the teacher has to buy them out of their own pocket). I understand being a teacher, especially in Arizona, must be frustrating as hell and kids can be a real pain in the ass. It just bums me out that some teachers can't keep their shit together and end up so jaded and mean. It totally fucks up the education experience and teaches kids to hate school from an early age.
  14. Rocket League

I've started running ranked matches and quickly realized that if I want to win, I have no choice but to play goalie every time. Nobody seems to be able to resist chasing the ball all over the field and any time I've not played goalie, the other team scored easy points because nobody was back there. It's fun enough I guess but sometimes I want to chase the shiny ball everywhere too.
  15. I do love Conker. I played through it originally on the N64 and then again on the Xbox remake. The online multiplayer was surprisingly fun and I probably dumped a couple hundred hours into that as well. I'll definitely end up playing through that one with my daughter too. Every kid deserves to take on the great mighty poo at some point during their childhood. But we're still a few years out on that one.
  16. Feminism

No worries Argobot. I think you have every right to be frustrated and it truly is unfortunate that this community doesn't have more female voices. Either way, there probably isn't much point in dragging this discussion out any further as I think we've all put our thoughts out there.
  17. Feminism

I legitimately don't know how to react to a statement like this. I mean, you're right, its a bummer that this is the case. I guess I'll just politely bow out of this discussion.
  18. Feminism

I think the bolded part is probably where our disagreement is. What if we consider other generalized things we say about men within feminism and apply the same logic we are applying to "kill all men"? If I were to say something like "men are overwhelmingly responsible for all of the shitty things in this world", would it be reasonable for someone to take offense on similar grounds? I understand this stuff is tricky to navigate but it seems like if we say that it is reasonable for a person of color to take offense to "kill all men" then it would be equally reasonable for them to take offense to any negative generalization about men that other segments of society might make specifically about black men.
  19. Feminism

Personally, I don't think it is funny, I don't think it accomplishes anything, and I would probably also roll my eyes if I heard someone say it. But I'm also just not convinced that it is harmful and if it is a thing people want to say because it is cathartic for them or whatever, I don't see a problem with it. Totally agreed. I don't mean to pick apart their sensitivity and I'm not even saying this person is wrong for feeling that way. I'm just saying that I don't feel it is a convincing enough argument that I would be offended if people didn't stop saying that particular thing.
  20. Feminism

I think that last part is the approach that works for me. For me, I think this is one of those cases where you see someone else's perspective on what you see as a harmless throw away joke and just have to decide whether or not their argument is convincing enough for you to change your behavior. From a very specific point of view, I guess I could see a line of reasoning where "kill all men" could have racist connotations. But it really does seem to take a little bit of reaching to get there and I don't think it's a convincing enough argument that I would expect anyone to expunge that joke from their vocabulary. I also don't buy the notion that it's best for people to just stop saying a thing if it is brought to their attention that someone out there takes offense to it. People can take offense to all kinds of different things for all kinds of different reasons. Sometimes they are logical and sometimes they aren't. I think to some degree there is a balance to reach in the world where people should be compassionate enough to at least consider how their words are taken by others and refine their language where necessary but also where they shouldn't be expected to cater to every reaction out there. It would be a pretty damn boring world if our default position was to stop saying a joke every time someone somewhere said they were offended by it without taking some time to decide whether or not the offense taken has merit.
  21. I, like many others here, have struggled at times with creating new threads that don't already exist somewhere on these forums. If you're anything like me it goes something like this: There is some type of discussion I am interested in taking part in so I use the forum search to see if I can find a relevant topic. 13 pages of threads come up and I browse the first 2 pages before I assume that the topic I'm interested in doesn't exist. I create the topic and someone immediately posts with a link to a super obscurely named topic that has been buried by the sands of time. I feel stupid. I think the forum veterans around here would prove much more useful in locating forum topics than the limited forum search capability so hopefully this thread comes in handy. To start this off, is there an existing thread on these forums where people can ask about the existence of other topics before creating a new thread? Because if there is I'm going to feel pretty fucking stupid. Thread inquiries: Intoxication in Video Games - https://www.idlethumbs.net/forums/topic/9086-intoxication-in-video-games/ News about the business of video games - https://www.idlethumbs.net/forums/topic/8117-the-business-side-of-video-space-games/
  22. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

The usual. Keeping foul people off these forums. The post was only up for a couple minutes though so I guess my post makes no sense.
  23. Destiny

I'm usually on around 9PM Phoenix time on Fridays and Saturdays. On weeknights I don't play as much but I might jump on some evenings for an hour or two around 10 or 11PM. I do also play sporadically throughout the day on the weekends but it's usually hard to commit to anything more than a few PvP matches or shorter activities. CussedCayuse and my friend Zasa are usually on around the time I play so we are at least able to run some of the three person content. Getting people together at that time for raids or any other 6 person PvP stuff has been virtually impossible though. And we haven't tried trials in a while because we got absolutely crushed when we tried it a while back.
  24. Video Game Pricing - Fair or Not Fair

I agree that games costing more would most likely not fix this. But I think for some small segments of developers, it would. And yes, if you can't make a profitable product without working your employees to the bone then you don't have a sustainable business model. It's even sadder that on top of that expectation, people are often let go as soon as the product ships. Work them to the bone and then fire them. Rinse and repeat.
