I think this discussion is worthy of a new topic. My opinion is that a $60 price tag is a pretty fair price for many games considering that price has stayed relatively flat over the last 25 years even though development costs (for AAA games at least) have continued to go up. I've even come around to being pretty okay with developers or publishers carving out parts of their game ahead of time so they can release it as paid DLC. Making games isn't cheap and people in the games industry are worked to the bone as it is so I don't mind paying a little extra in a lot of cases. But there's a whole lot of factors at play and I'm sure it's not a black and white issue. Some games seem more fairly priced at $60 and some games don't. Some DLC feels exploitative and some of it is great and can improve the overall experience of a game. Let's talk it out. And also, I'm quoting dartmonkey's question here as I think it is pertinent to the discussion:

Anyone who loves the music in Chrono Cross as much as I do will appreciate this article: http://tay.kinja.com/the-amazing-music-of-chrono-cross-1724009925 Edit: Damn link is acting weird. The article is available on the left sidebar on that page.

I think a better way to look at that exchange is that someone took the time to give you an honest response on how they felt about what you were saying without attacking you as a person. You are looking to better yourself and that type of response is pretty valuable feedback on where you're going right and where you're going wrong. You may not have liked the way namman siggins reacted to some of the language you used but it's kind of a double standard to expect to be able to say what you want without anyone being bothered by it, but at the same time not have any patience for people responding in a way that bothers you. And why would you just bail like that over something so minor? You definitely used some troublesome language and despite that, namman took the time to respond to you, giving you the benefit of the doubt on a lot of stuff and lightly calling you out for some of the stuff that should rightly be called out. That was a totally fair exchange and I've been called out worse than that many times around here when I've acted stupid.

No, she just knew it was a popular thing and assumed it was bad because God or something. Another random thing that was burned into my brain by Ms. B was this thing we had to chant during the last week of school to remind ourselves of what we needed to bring on the last day: "A rag and a bag, a bowl and a spoon and a sandwich... and toilet paper." A rag to clean our desks A bag to put all our shit in A bowl to put ice cream in A spoon to eat the ice cream A sandwich... so we could eat a sandwich And toilet paper so we could roll each other up in toilet paper to look like mummies Students that didn't bring a bowl and a spoon got their ice cream dumped on a sheet of paper and had to eat it with a ruler.

I can kind of buy the argument that college kids can maybe be a bit too sensitive, but I think it has less to do with the current state of our society and more to do with age. When I was in my early 20s, it wasn't all that uncommon for me to get super worked up over things and blow them out of proportion because I was young, naive, idealistic, and just found it frustrating when things didn't work the way I thought they should work. But now that I'm at the ripe old age of 30, it's a whole lot easier to just not get too worked up about things and to understand that there are a whole lot of people with various life experiences that cause them to act in ways that don't make sense to me.

If it makes you feel any better, I've got the entire southwest United States all to myself. If you exclude California.

I'm fine with teachers being strict, setting clear boundaries, and not putting up with shit as long as they are fair and consistent about it. But I have an issue with teachers who just can't keep their cool and resort to yelling or just being mean to students. Growing up and going to tiny Seventh Day Adventist schools, we unfortunately had a few of those lunatic abusive teachers that would unexpectedly fly off the handle and start screaming at students for super minor shit. The worst of them all though was my 3rd through 5th grade teacher Ms. B. As punishment for one of the more disobedient kids, she enclosed his desk in a giant refrigerator box for 2 months to put him in "isolation" from the rest of the class. He wasn't allowed to talk to anyone and every recess he had to pace back and forth between two trees while the rest of us played. She saw another kid spit on the ground outside once during recess and made him fill up a cup with his own spit as punishment. Then, when The Simpsons was exploding in popularity, she would punish anyone she heard say "Doh!" by making them write "I will not say Doh!" 200 times. But sometimes we had the last laugh, like in 4th grade when she got light-headed, collapsed, and pulled a hot dog out of her purse and started eating it. (all of this stuff actually happened and I'm not exaggerating one bit here, this teacher was literally satan) I have no idea where I'm going with this anymore. I guess I just really wanted to reminisce about horrible, fucked up childhood experiences with private education. Thinking about Ms. B, yeah, my daughter's gonna be fine and her teacher's probably not all that bad at all. I swear though, I could write a novel about Ms. B. So many fucked up stories with that teacher.

I don't think the Waluigi's mean what you think they mean. But then again, maybe they do! But seeing how things have progressed on this page, it may have been a premature Waluigiing.

I completely agree with this. I know people don't want to be giving cultural appropriate or feminism 101 lessons all the time and I'm sure it gets super tiring; but of all places this is the place where having some patience and taking the time to try to educate others when they are asking honest questions actually has a chance to yield some results and change some opinions.
-
I actually kind of agree with what you're saying here and I wish we could do a better job of fostering these kinds of discussions/debates instead of getting frustrated and talking down to the people that don't agree with the majority. I don't necessarily agree with some of the opposing opinions that you and others like Ninety-Three bring up but I appreciate hearing a different point of view and reading through the ensuing discussion.

Do we really even need the letter Q? It's clearly the worst letter in the alphabet and K, W, C, and U can all come together in various ways to accomplish everything that Q accomplishes.
-
Way too many e's and u's.

Queue is the worst word in the English language. Probably even worse than infrared. From now on I am going to pronounce it as "Kwayway" purely out of spite.

Yeah, I guess it doesn't look all that great. I can't even think about that Meeseeks episode without starting to shake with laughter though. I haven't seen something that struck me as that funny in quite a while. I literally sat in bed for a half hour after watching it trying to stop myself from laughing.

I started watching Rick and Morty. At first, some of the humor seemed a bit juvenile but after a few episodes the show has grown on me a ton and my love for it was cemented after seeing the Mr. Meeseeks episode. They just nail some of their concepts so well that it makes it easy to forgive any missteps.

That was really good! Keep up the good work.

And likewise, there should be room for someone with a good reputation around here to be allowed to make a random, innocent observation without people trying to read between the lines and call them out. I don't see how it is in any way productive for us to have a page and a half of arguing about the deeper implications of a post like that.
-
I do think we could stand to give each other the benefit of the doubt a bit more and not blow a little random aside like that into a full blown issue though. Especially when it's a post coming from miffy.

My daughter started first grade today. Based on idle chatter we've heard from other parents and our own observations, it looks like our daughter has the "mean" teacher this year. She started off by immediately yelling at some of the kids because they took their backpacks off and then shut the classroom door in the face of several parents who were waiting to give her bags of classroom supplies (which we are obligated to bring because school funding has been cut to the point where parents are expected to donate all of the necessary classroom supplies or the teacher has to buy them out of their own pocket). I understand being a teacher, especially in Arizona, must be frustrating as hell and kids can be a real pain in the ass. It just bums me out that some teachers can't keep their shit together and end up so jaded and mean. It totally fucks up the education experience and teaches kids to hate school from an early age.

I've started running ranked matches and quickly realized that if I want to win, I have no choice but to play goalie every time. Nobody seems to be able to resist chasing the ball all over the field and any time I've not played goalie, the other team scored easy points because nobody was back there. It's fun enough I guess but sometimes I want to chase the shiny ball everywhere too.

Idle Thumbs 222: The Bubble Guy
Zeusthecat replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I do love Conker. I played through it originally on the N64 and then again on the Xbox remake. The online multiplayer was surprisingly fun and I probably dumped a couple hundred hours into that as well. I'll definitely end up playing through that one with my daughter too. Every kid deserves to take on the great mighty poo at some point during their childhood. But we're still a few years out on that one. -
No worries Argobot. I think you have every right to be frustrated and it truly is unfortunate that this community doesn't have more female voices. Either way, there probably isn't much point in dragging this discussion out any further as I think we've all put our thoughts out there.

I legitimately don't know how to react to a statement like this. I mean, you're right, its a bummer that this is the case. I guess I'll just politely bow out of this discussion.

I think the bolded part is probably where our disagreement is. What if we consider other generalized things we say about men within feminism and apply the same logic we are applying to "kill all men"? If I were to say something like "men are overwhelmingly responsible for all of the shitty things in this world", would it be reasonable for someone to take offense on similar grounds? I understand this stuff is tricky to navigate but it seems like if we say that it is reasonable for a person of color to take offense to "kill all men" then it would be equally reasonable for them to take offense to any negative generalization about men that other segments of society might make specifically about black men.
