I'm taking one for the team; it's downloading now. I'll answer any questions that I can find the answers for.

Oddly, this made me feel better. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNLzEuADhY8

I'm pretty upset actually. Usually, I would be like "Oh these trolls are victims themselves and they need to be included so that they can understand how to value and respect others." but today I just don't feel it. I've never made a good decision while angry so I don't make decisions while angry any more, I don't want to be angry, but I am. The video that R3miel7 posted seemed to have some reasonable ideas to impliment. I still want to kick them out though. I'm keeping the "gamer" title and taking it away from them. I want everyone to be happy, but I'm having a hard time continuing to expect that women and minorities have to take all of this psychological damage while we struggle to come up with a way to apply accountability to these hateful, ignorant bigots in a compassionate manner. I need to remember that any technological solution will eventually be used against women and minorities though. And I would feel a lot of regret if my efforts to achieve justice made the situation worse. I'm just so frustrated.

Well what is the word for trying to silence people or make them do things by threatening bodily harm? Edit: I found a good replacement, Mobbing. Sorry for belittling the suffering of others.
  5. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

I didn't know that Built To Spill was still an act. I've been waiting for a new album for a long time.

I can't believe how sheltered I have become. I really can't believe this is happening. Is Eron Gjoni a real person? I have a hard time believing that someone would publicly be so incredibly immature and pitiful. I understand why someone would think the entire thing is a conspiracy; would anyone really date this guy? I don't know what to do. The terrorists are winning. Is there a way to control who plays your game? Could DRM be used to make it so that these people (who think that a woman can't have consensual sex with as many people as she wants AND be successful for completely different reasons) can't ever play a game I make or enjoy anything I ever do? I want to kick them out. They have lost their privileges. The should have thought about how much they enjoyed playing their games before they promoted misogynist hate-speech. I want them all to get tagged with a steam-badge that can inform me that the only attention I should allow them is my attempts to explain that women exist as equals. Steam needs a misogynist badge that you can only get from being fucking useless.

Whoa, wait a second. Let me get this straight. People are claiming that the maker of Depression Quest has unethically gotten favorable reviews by having sex with reviewers? If that's what is happening, then..I'm just really angry. I'm really angry. I shouldn't type anything besides that I am angry. It's ok to be angry, it's just not okay to act on it. I'm really angry.I'm really angry. If this is what is going on, then I'm very angry right now. Maybe this is not what is going on. I'll go make some coffee and come back. Edit: It occur to me that people may think that I'm upset with the maker of Depression Quest. This is not the case. I am very upset with the misoogynistic shit-bags fucking idiot fucking dickheads who are attempting to slut-shame someone.
  8. Oculus rift

I'm way more interested in the potential of Oculus-enabled recordings of things like what's happening in Ferguson than concerts. I wonder if the technology will have an inherent tendency to convert view-points or solidify them more intensely than screen-coverage. I kinda doubt it will be any different.
  9. Fan Fiction

I just played through Curtain by dreamfeel and I spent a good chunk of it thinking that it was Gone Home fanfic.
  10. Unity Tutorials

I might end up buying this extension. It looks like a way I could add a lot of animations easily. Part of me wonders if these 2d tools already exist in mecanim or something and I'm just not aware of it yet. Nevermind, looking into it a bit, it looks like Unity already does this stuff.

I painted my nails on my left hand. It sure does feel different when I grab a few dollars out of my wallet to make a purchase. If any of the men in here are bored, I recommend painting the nails of your left hand. It may not be a feminist act, but it can feel like one some times. Simple acts like cutting food or urinating in a public bathroom send disonant signals into my mind and make me think a lot about gender-roles, masculinity, and femininity throughout the day.
  12. For the week of August 18th, 2014 we will be playing: Criticism Roundup 2013 by thecatamites You can download the single game from here for free Or you can buy the entire collection of 50 games from here.
  13. Ferguson

I wonder how this current manifestation of systemic racism and police-brutality will maintain two meanings as people think about it. Are we at risk of using all our political capital removing military equipment from the police and not addressing the racism (or the other way around)? It doesn't seem like anyone talks about cops shooting black people during Katrina anymore. Now they just talk about whether or not the levies are high enough. I can't believe that was 9 years ago.
  14. Ferguson

I agree, but the idea is that by that time the participants will have a clarity of their communal interest based off of their experiences working as a group. They will also have the relationships and power-structures established so they could potentially mobilize in order to defend their interests. I also think that we underestimate how much decentralizing the production of our basic needs could empower minorities.
  15. Ferguson

I very much share the sentiment and frustration with MrHoatzin, but I also make sure to acknowlegde the humanitarian boons of a mixed-economy. Our society has become so technological that a fall of the systems of power and methods of production would do far too much humanitarian damage. Regulation has become absolutely necessary now that we have so many weapons and chemicals and dams and other things that would be massive problems without central oversight. Our mixed-economy religious plutarchy is incredibly violent, but I think we will make more progress by creating new systems that will one day make it obsolete. In other words, respect everyone, join a credit-union and if you employ anyone, form a co-op.
  16. Episode 267: Revising History

This may be my favorite episode. I really enjoyed Troy's Reconstruction example of revisionist history. I grew up and live in Virginia. The most I knew about the Reconstruction up until a week ago was that there were carpet-baggers, share-croppers and that there were some racist voting laws called "Jim Crow". So when Merus posted this article: http://weeklysift.com/2014/08/11/not-a-tea-party-a-confederate-party/ in the Ferguson thread of these fine forums, it really rang true to my experience learning history in the South and my education just feels shameful. Hearing Troy give his summary was a pleasant coincidence. I don't know much history or play many strategy games so I can't be of much help, but don't worry; I have partial information and opinions. I haven't played much of it yet, but I bought Postmortem: One Must Die because it sounded like the basic idea was to go to a party on the eve of a civil war between industrialists and aristocrats, talk with people to determine how you felt about the political tensions and then choose an asassination target to tip the scales. I'm not completely sure that this description is accurate, and it promotes a very simplistic view of war if true, but I think it's an interesting scope of agency for a war game, especially because the complexity of opinions, maybe even the culture of member of the fictional society are what are informing your choice as a player. I would also say that the drafting portion of Civilization 5 where you are picking a bonus based off of your personal biases and then see how it plays out in a historical simulation is an interesting game in itself. I imagine that a game where you are forming coalitions in a volatile, political environment based off of their alliances and abilities could make an interesting war/politics game. I think that this is close in spirit to what the Double Fine prototype Dear Leader is trying to accomplish (though I believe it focuses on internal pressures more than ones outside the nation's borders). As a player you are mostly making decisions of who your cabinent-members are. I'm using these examples because I believe that a way to have an alternate perspective on war, politics, or states is to literally have an alternative perspective. The role that a game puts you in and the abilities it gives you are a major portion of its rhetoric. In a game (as Jon Shafer's description of how Sid Meier defines games) about war where you play as the military leader, you are saying the war is won by military leaders. If you played as a diplomat, then the war is won by diplomats. If you play as a housemaid, then wars are won and lost by housemaids. I'd also like to point out that one of the ways that strategy-games have informes my understanding of history and my politics is the abstracted rhetoric embedded in the mechanics. Some basic examples of this are how sharing borders affects the way I perceive other nations, the massive advantage of having a port, and the enormous effect that the creation of a world-congress has on my diplomatic methods and objectives in Civilization 5. Of course all of these mechanics are absurdly simplified, but it does allow me to see current events and history in more of a systems-understanding and less of a linear one. Great episode.
  17. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

---------------------------------------- This makes me want Talk Talk to make a electro-dance album.
  18. I'm planning on doing this later, inspired by yours. I'll probably just do it for a game I could easily find. I just want to see how a mockup from memory compares to a game I played some time ago.
  19. It has only been in the past year that I have started to notice that there are distribution-channels outside of Xbox, Sony, Nintendo, and Steam. At first I may have been pushing myself a little bit to give smaller games a chance, but at this point curation sites like Warpdoor and Freeindiegam.es and the larger hosts (such as Game Jolt, Newgrounds, and Itch.io) have become arguably more significant to me. I still love Titanfall, and Spelunky and I can't wait for the next Dragon Age, but the breadth of experience that is much easier to access from playing five or so freeware titles a week has really taken me by surprise and makes me say to myself on a regular basis "What if I hadn't fallen through the floor in Galah Galah? Would I still be consuming nothing but polished products!?" But we already know that clyde is struck with a case of small-game fever, let's listen to someone else talk about it in a much more convincing way. http://critical-proximity.com/2014/03/16/why-weird-games-are-important/

  21. The 'Does this thread exist?' thread

Don't worry about duplicating topics so much that you don't post. If you do want to do a check, just type "Idle Forums whatever the topic is" in a search engine and you'll find it if it's obvious. What was it that you wanted to talk about? Welcome to the forums!
  22. Didactic Thumbs (Pedantry Corner)

Ever since I read that article about using synonyms properly, I've been looking up words I thought I knew the connotation of, but did not. Did you know that "weird " is supposed to connotate a supernatural aspect? Also, I love that "eccentric" can literally mean "placed off center". "Paradigm" seems to have a technical connotation; I might start using "zeitgeist" when speaking about culture.
  23. I have no idea what the game is, but I just want to be clear on something. Did you draw that mock-up Murdoc? Because I love it.
