  1. Unity Questions Thread

I like it. With the old system, I would clumsily go between scripting OnGUI() commands where I was forever adjusting public variables for the rect and using 3d text when I got sick of it. The new system feels much more easy to use for me. I actually can see myself using it just because I find pleasure in doing so. I pick a GUI element from a dropdown, drag it into place, put a command on it PlayMaker style and I'm good.
  2. Netrunner!

Mattie Brice experimented with augmenting Netrunner with a tarot deck in order to encourage more story-oriented (less optimized) play. http://www.mattiebrice.com/once-more-with-feeling-using-the-tarot-for-play/
  3. Spacebase!

I just want to point out that Minecraft got more expensive as time went on while Spacebase got less expensive. Spacebase did not follow the Minecraft method of funding. Also, I certainly identify with the potential disappointment of early-access, but I much prefer having it available than not. I don't like the idea that the only games which can make money are the ones that the profit-orientated capitalists or the developers themselves can fund to completion.
  4. Spacebase!

So what does releasing the source-code mean? Do the mods in the Steam Workshop of other games require source-code to be released? Is setting up Steam Workshop a difficult thing to do?
  5. Curtain by dreamfeel

So I was trying to be coy about this one because I just assumed that it would get more attention. But time has been passing and I'm not seeing people on here talk about Curtain even though I'm certain that a few of you will enjoy it. Play it if you enjoy games that deal in domestic, emotional struggles. It's free. http://dreamfeel.itch.io/curtain
  6. Amateur Game Making Night

    Only ghouls fall in sludge.
  7. What is this vibe. At first. I think it's the accessibility of unrefined technique, but then I play some other games that may have the same amount of scope (MS Paint or whatever) and they don't resonate with me. I find the effortless style and lack of polish to be deceptive. I feel the same way about haikus and abstract expressionism; it looks like something anyone can do, but then I try and realize that a high level of technique is there. Some types of technique is easier to identify than others perhaps.
  8. For reference (it's long and boring like many NES games, but note that you drive a submarine around in space and dock to go inside and kill brains: Video of Air Fortress (1987) I assume is the "octopus-decision" is at the beginning of the game. It feels like a effortless feature-add that comes from that desire to talk to the monsters in Doom. Oddly, it does make the limited-agency induced killing of the anti-octopus portion feel more short-sighted and cruel. This was what I found most interesting about the game. I haven't explained it well yet though. Playing through both portions of Octopus Decision makes me want to actually play Doom with monsters I can talk to. Not because it would be a better game or because it would provide more mature context for the killing; Octopus Decision shows me that such a feature-add can be like a dipping-sauce at a foreign food restaurant that you try once and decide it's not your thing. It is still on the table being unused and you are reminded of the unsatiating option before most bites. This prescence doesn't actually add flavor to the food or any memorable significance, but just having the option makes the core-experience feel like part of a broad, bland spectrum. I'm having a hard time describing this. The "octopus-decision" doesn't feel like having the option to read books in Skyrim, it's more like how Skyrim had kinect-support for dragon-shouts. It's never a viable option and non-use doesn't add much, but it is there and you know it is there. As far as the meta-game goes, Making goofy shit for goofy reasons is always very inspirational for me. I don't need a real reason; I just need the will, the time, and the tools. -------- I appreciate you writing those impressions. I very much enjoy reading them. For some reason, my personality makes me desperate for input from people who enjoy things I enjoy. It's really hard to find people who like 50 Short-Games as much as I, but it's such a noteworthy collection. Having your input feels like it did when I found someone else who enjoyed The Bald Soprano.
  9. Oculus rift

Yeah, I am very happy about the Unity announcement. I can't wait to make useless non-commercial doodles for it. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to. I don't understand the difference between a prototype and a development-kit.
  10. Oculus rift

    ...aaaaand it's another development-kit.

  12. I'm super jealous of people who like seafood because they really like seafood. I can tell I'm missing out , so every once in a while I try again; I can't stand it. For the record, this includes nori. I'd go as far as to say that the taste I don't like in seafood is the only taste that nori has.
  13. Unity Questions Thread

I just downloaded this yesterday and I like it a lot. Y'all probably wouldn't have a hard time figuring this out, but just in case here are instructions on how to change the text component of the new stuff. http://answers.unity3d.com/questions/777335/46-ui-changing-the-text-component-via-script.html
  14. I also find all seafood repugnant. You are not alone.

  16. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I have gone through waves of similar feelings. For me personally, I've realized that what is happening is that my perspective on the world (and my role in it) is clashing with a reality it had thus far been able to avoid. Before all this I had assumed that no one wanted to be a misogynist, they just didn't realize that they were being one. I'm sure you can see how that expectation has broken me. I think what has helped me deal with it is just allowing myself some space to breath. Play some games and make some goofy-shit for no good reason. You aren't giving up. You are just taking a vacation to allow this new reality to digest. It's like jumping, you only fly freely for a moment and then you have to come back. Now that we've seen it we can't unsee it, but we can take naps and do something irrelevant for a day or two. It helps.
  17. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

At 55 minutes in, Polansky succinctly describes the reason why "leaving video games" seems like a good option for freelancers (especially minorities). She explains that they have all watched the games-press feel the need to compromise with the consumerist fans enough that it ends up throwing those freelancers under the bus. The reason the games-press does this is that outside the sphere of those consumerist fans, the authority of the games-press has no legitimacy. http://www.mixcloud.com/SufficientlyHuman/episode-4-leaving-disneyland-and-other-metaphors/ * This is why it is important to create value in the actual content of games-writing. When the reason that the readership values game-writing for its access to the industry, that writing will be do nothing but pander to two masters: the game-industry and the consumer. The solution is to create writing that is valuable because of its capability in communicating new methods of appreciation. If games-writing is capable of guiding us into new forms of appreciation that are not dependent on access to the industry or access to the consumer (a fiction necessitated by the desire to sell the ability to sell), then its legitimacy will be inherent. *Here is the blog page for the podcast, it has reference material. I didn't use it because you can't fast forward from the blog page. http://sufficientlyhuman.com/archives/435#more-435

  22. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

New party-anthem. Goofy is not a Disney character, it is a sensibility.

Is Bejeweled 3 free on Origin right now? If so, I recommend getting it. I love poker and the digging one.
