  1. Rainbow Six: Siege

Here are four codes for a free weekend of the game (pc). I've probably said this enough but, I really enjoy playing this; it's like Shadowrun for the Xbox 360 which I played about as compulsively. WPLQ-LKYC-Q74D-74L4 GP9A-L7A9-J8PA-DMXL 3MBT-8J7E-DC4T-3DQA Q8QY-RLDV-8WXN-M86Q
  2. Gear VR

I think we signed up for an Oculus account.
  3. Gear VR

I wouldn't install anything until you get the device it doesn't take long at all. Just turn the volume on your phone up, plug your phone into the Gear, wait for it to tell you to remove the phone, and then I think the Oculus app appears on your phone automatically. Downloading while you are playing games can make it overheat (doesn't damage the phone, but stops you from playing) so I wouldn't cue up a ton of downloads until you are ready to stop for a little while. I think Smash Hit is a really small file though (I might be wrong). Make sure to check out the Otoy section in Oculus photos.
  4. Social Justice

I associate my culture with its claim to strive for naive egalitarianism for the sake of egalitarianism. My wife is learning Korean right now and she keeps discovering all these assumptions of hierarchy embedded in the language (honorifics) that I have no respect for whatsoever. I think my culture atleast claims that egalitarianism is more important than tradition even if it fails to be egalitarian in reality. There's a lot of examples of particular mixes that I associate with my culture, I'm not well aware of other cultures, but in my experience, there are so many little subcultures that have a dynamic with local hegemonies. There's a huge amount of culture where I am, just pay attention to greetings and small-chat for a bit and ask yourself if it's heavily influenced by the specifics of your locality.
  5. Gear VR

I'm not sure if this helps, but I suspect that once I get an Oculus Rift, I won't use the Gear for anything beyond demos to friends and family. It gets really heavy and uncomfortable after 30 minutes or so of use and I imagine that the addition of positional-tracking is going to make a huge difference for anything that isn't a 360 3D photo or video (though they might be able to simulate that little bit of movement, I don't know), Oh and I also managed to get into a multiplayer jam-session of for the first time last night. I was really hoping I would be able to see the other little person bobbing their head to the beats and moving around to make selections (you can not). Ultimately it was a nice communal experience (I think), but they may have left because I was changing their beats constantly in order to mutate the song performatively. There wasn't enough communication to be able to tell. The appeal of that app is the feel of multiplayer performance. The VR portion is alright, but I'm surprised I haven't seen something that does the same thing on PC. The Google Jam thing had big latency problems when I tried it with Dibs a long time ago.
  6. Gear VR

I encountered my first hyper-sexualized female 3D model in VR while looking around in Dirrogate: Memories with Maya (the 360 video is look-aroundable , but without the 3D and scale it's... absurdly compressed. The hands at the concert are actually multiple paralleled 2D layers of video at different depths for instance. Still, you can grab the screen and rotate it in the Youtube player). During Maya's first scene on the balcony, I was like "Ah, ok Second-Life lady." and didn't really notice much beyond her 3D modelness. But in the scene that starts at 4:15, she looks like a giant female athlete with a waist-size unlike anything I've seen in the physical world. I'm not someone who notices how off Barbie's proportions are with a casual glance. But in VR, I am completely distracted by it. I thought this was an interesting anecdote about the differences I experience in this medium. I liked being in the room with the 3D people models. They just look like giant animated dolls and I find that really novel. I wonder if it fires off some child-part of my brain, Maya isn't larger than a woman can be, but she is larger than any woman I've seen in the last decade. If you told me that there was a VR app where I could just sit in some lobby and watch Second-Life-esque 3D models wander around, chat and do their dance animations, I would totally download and play it. Fictional people models in VR is appealing to me in a similar sense to going to the zoo to be present with animals of varying sizes. There are some odd, amateurish 3D efforts available on GearVR that I think will be made obsolete very quickly. It's neat to watch the artists try. The darkness of the bedroom feels off in a way that I was more interested in the nature of the shadows than the story. The comic-panel being skewed just compelled me to cock my head to the side during that entire scene. The frame-rate of the 3D rendered portions of some scenes are slow dissolves that was something I'd expect from Sandman or Mystique when they don't have the energy to keep up their anthropomorphic form. The part where they used a morphing transition between buses and motorcycle-carts was actually in 3D which was very disorientating (especially when the camera was moved between the shots that were eventually morphed). It's a really odd piece of media and this is not the first I've seen that I was happy to watch once with this type of interest.

I imagine that you would have a better chance realizing your cultural identity if you lived abroad for a while.
  8. "Auf Wiedersehen" means "until we see again" according to Wikipedia. The phrase seems like a nonconclusive, conclusion. When there is an acquiescence that making efforts to sustain will eventually transform this into something completely different, "Auf Wiedersehen" is something that can be said without hurt feelings or needs for explanation. Auf Wiedersehen, Mogey seems like a attempt to demarcate 50 Short Games from future efforts. There is a sense that it is necessary to leave the worlds behind without admitting to them that they are not able to sustain us. One of my favorite things about Auf Wiedersehen, Mogey is the mix of the sinister elementals with the charm of wandering upon a musician atop a landscape of saturated color patch-work. Mogey is a fool (in a Major Arcana sense), weaving through dangers he/she is unaware of entirely. The innocence of Mogey's motivation (to find the source of a playful tune) seems to protect us from harm. Upon finding the source, it transforms into the organ of expression and ingestion. I don't have a particular, metaphor with which to understand that chronology of surreal artifacts and events, but it maintains the balance between severity and amusement for me that keeps me nervous throughout this fantastical anecdote. Auf Wiedersehen, Mogey doesn't leave me with the platitude that good things don't last forever. Instead it contextualizes the quilt of lands previous with the wonder and anxiety of the imaginarium from which the tiny fables have bubbled. Leaving the space doesn't exclude the chance that it will be revisited, but blindly wandering back in isn't an option now that so much has been realized during the initial journey. I picture thecatamites dressed like a 1940's noir character, waving to or from a departing train after saying to 50 Short Games "If we do see each other again, we will be different people."
  9. [Dev Log] Ice Break

I just submitted this gif to Bottomless Pits In Games. Ice Break is part of this great and grand tradition in computer games culture!
  10. Social Justice

I hope we don't lose our privilege to talk about these subjects on the Idle Forums. But if things continue to escalate into aggressive dismissal and insulting accusations I would understand why the thread got locked. I think it's possible to deescalate while still expressing difference in opinion. I don't think Merus is necessarily jabbing, I think they may be pointing out that spokespeople of both viewpoints are going to sound authoritative. Also, Merus isn't necessarily saying that America is shitty in comparison, but there is a tendency to be more comfortable talking about these issues in American culture than in a poster's backyard. I actually very much enjoyed Blambo's perspective because it showed me how american-centric I'm viewing these issues by pointing out their own perspective informed by their own personal localities.
  11. [Dev Log] Ice Break

    Sorry bout the volume levels.
  12. Cultural Appropriation

If I ever visit Australia, I'd love to try both authentic aboriginal dishes and whatever the australian chefs are doing with bush tucker. I imagine that they would both be interesting experiences vastly different from each other. I doubt I'll visit Australia though.
  13. Social Justice

Is there a foodie-hunt for authentic aboriginal dishes in Australia? That would be interesting to hear about. -- Also, I enjoy Gormongous's opinion, but I personally find it no more valuable than itsamoose's opinion.
  14. Gear VR

I just showed my father-in-law the Cirque du Soleil performance Kurios which is 3d and 360. He watched for about 5 minutes and then the phone overheated. We spent the next hour talking him down from a mild existential crisis. Apparently he thought it would be more like a 3d movie on a screen and he was not prepared to have 3d people surrounding him and poking at him. Simply put, he was not ready because he had no idea that anything like VR existed. He wants to try it again but keeps on saying "That was too spooky, that was just so spooky, I'm glad you guys were here. I couldn't do that when I'm alone." I wasn't prepared for it to shake anyone like that and I'll be more mindful in the future.
  15. If you are so interested in VR, the minimum specifications that Oculus published include a GTX970 or higher.
  16. I am very much enjoying Nick's description of playing Ancestry.com.
  17. Rainbow Six: Siege

I've been reading the neogaf threads about Rainbow Six: Siege and this post is rather useful. http://m.neogaf.com/showpost.php?p=188670449 I suppose I should update how I feel about R6:Siege. It's awesome, I could easily play all day if I didn't have stuff I needed to do. I've unlocked all the operators I care about. I still don't know the maps very well (especially where the cameras are), but I'm just having such a good time setting up a defense that I think is a little bit clever or trying to breach in a way that is coordinated with teammates.
  18. [Release] Shtone Hemge

Do the druids chant low and slow?
  19. Philosophy & Economics

This is a man who embraces the power of artificial scarcity. http://www.polygon.com/2015/12/9/9878156/once-upon-a-time-in-shaolin-league-of-legends?utm_campaign=polygon&utm_content=chorus&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter I've wonder if there are people who look for games in which the exploits are unlikely to ever be fixed by the developers. High population is probably a variable in the games they chose to play.
  20. I branched out a bit tonight and visited what was pretty much an american college-town attempt at a korean pc-bang. There were only two people there besides myself, so my impressions are stunted, but it was interesting to experience a demonstration of local game's culture. I tried Splatoon for 15 minutes then ended up playing the first 40 minutes of Shadow of Mordor on a pc while the other two fellows played Rust. I realized that I was there to be social more than anything else, but I don't know if that is why other people would go there. They had good music. I'd like to have sat and drank a beverage and talked games with some strangers, but that wasn't close to happening.
  21. Spacebase!

Didn't they give Hack & Slash to folks who bought Spacebase, I took that as some amount of recompense. Really though, I don't see what the option is. It's not like it is now illegal for Double Fine to crowd-fund because they didn't deliver a product to funder's expectations. Just don't fund Psychonauts 2 if you feel like you will get burned.
  22. Rainbow Six: Siege

I've been enjoying barricading and breaching. This was an attempt to make a bit of a tutorial, but it just became fun chaos. I'll try again later.
