  1. TITANFLAPS 2

I played a lot of Titanfall and I very much enjoyed it. The majority of public complaints were that tyere was no single-player component for a $60 game, that there wasn't enough weapon customization, and that leveling up and unlocks happened too quickly; none of these things bothered me. Titanfall has a meat-grinder pacing where players typically find themselves in combat immediately after spawning and die often. The main ways it distinguishes itself from games like the COD: Modern Warfare series is that you eventually earn the ability to call in a large mech. The mechs can be riden though, so there is a lot of moments where giants are trying to get players off of their backs. Another feature is wall-running, jump-jets, pilot-ejection, and zip-lines that don't feel constrained at all compared to something like BlackOps III. The cyber-suited infantry on exotic planetary colonies aesthetic is also significantly different than other similar theming. Another aspect that a lot of players never seemed to understand or simply didn't like, was that the main mode was not a traditional team-deathmatch. The main mode is called attrition ans the way it works is that thefirst team to get 300 points wins the match. Killing bots is 1-point, pilots are 5-points (irc) and titans are 4-points(irc). I love this mode. I basically have two types of builds. I either use a build that is highly mobile and can take out massive quantities of bots (smart-pistol is awesome for this). Or I harass titans and try to increase the ability of my team to dig in and control the map. Since neither of these strategies are focused on enemy players (unless they have similar strategies) AND since these strategies greatly increase the likelihood of winning in attrition, the end game lobby often has a few players who complain that I'm not playing it like traditional team-deathmatch. I never felt tye need for team-communication in Titanfall though; there are very few explicit mechanics that encourage team-play. I think that makes the game less satisfying than some other competitive shooters, but I'm looking forward to this next Titanfall game.
  2. WIZARD JAM 2016 // Welcome Thread

I'm totally not going to be embarassed when I make a move in the team-building thread.
  3. Pinball Club

This was a good game while still having no idea what is going on. I played as the rebels, played mission 1 which apparently includes some sort of attrition battle on the playfield which I'm not sure how well I did with. I played the lone wolf mission which was a surprising change in perspective. I think I beat that one, but I'm not sure. Around that time I noticed an energy-bar at the bottom of the table that was mostly red. I played multiple evade missions, but it kept saying "Fighter Lost" when I felt like I was hitting the flashing lanes. I also did two types of multiballs where I was just juggling during rather than knowing what the objectives were. I got a few promotions and upgraded my ships twice, but I have no idea what the upgrades do. And I did a repair mission where I got the impression that you can change the energy-bar at the bottom with combos(?) I think the energy-bar is your fleet-size and it said that combos would increase your fleet so... Very confusing table, but I find myself enjoying the shots and the chaos.

I want to choose a table soon so I can make the poster today. If you have any opinions on the table choice, please voice them soon.
  5. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

I'm looking forward to this after watching the trailer. I typically get bored with action-sequences and chases-scenes, but I enjoyed The Force Awakens for some reason.
  6. Pinball Club

I would enjoy playing a StarWars table. Here are some initial impressions of three of them: -Darth Vader has a lot of satisfying long shots, but it's very red. -StarFighter Assault has a lot of wild effects and logic that I'm interested in exploring, but there is a lot of movement on the table that isn't the ball and that can be distracting. -Return of the Jedi is colorful and I'd be interested to get used to that upper-mid playfield. I progressed pretty far in the Scene1 mode and it seemed to keep going for a while, it would be fun to see all the scenes.
  7. Making Music. Tunes by Idle Thumbsters

It's going to make remembering major scales on the keyboard way easier, but also I can feel it making my hearing more flexible to augmentation (I think that's the right word for throwing in sharps).

I think I just had a break-through. Basically, it is fun to start with the Cmaj scale and then chose the 5th's major for the next scale; this way you can watch the accidentals accumulate as each 5thMajor will take on the former's fourth# as its seventh. Example: Play Cmajor. Cmajor's perfect fifth is G Play Gmajor Gmajor has one accidental (Cmajor's fourth# which is F# takes on the role of Gmajor's seventh note. Gmajor's fifth is D. Play Dmajor Dmajor keeps F# as its major3rd and takes on Gmajor's fourth# (C#) as its seventh. And so on. It's pretty cool to figure out as you go along playing the scales. Btw, I didn't figure this out, I read about it, but now I get it.
  9. Pinball Club

Let's have another week-long tournament. Does anyone have suggestions for which table we should play? Maybe the tournament could run from April 10th to the 17th?
  10. General Video Game Deals Thread

I played a little bit of the single-player campaign and I was rather impressed with the water and lighting in a hallway. I play single-player campaigns very slowly because I tend to be more interested in the environments than the objectives. In multiplayer I get kicked out of enjoying how the force of the tank's cannon moves plastic chairs when a helicopter bombards me. I kind of like that scarcity of wonder enforced by oppositional players. It is a really nice game, I like spending time in it.

Battlefield 4 Premium Edition is $25 right now on Origin. YAY! I got it because I had a blast playing the gametime demo. It's like a better version of Battlefield 3.
  12. Idle Thumbs Readers Slack & Discord

That's funny. I assumed you were Hank because of the similarities in avatar. I don't know why the link isn't working. Sorry. Maybe try googling Slack and looking for the IdleReaders channel? Idk
  13. Game prototyping tools

It really depends on my initial conception I have for the project since I have a lot of genre-specific engines available to me. TyranoBuilder is an excellent program for prototyping or making visual-novels. It's very fast once you are familiar with it. RPGmaker is great for prototyping narrative games that have top-down exploration as a main mechanic. One of the major benefits of RPGmaker is the spectrum of assets available by default. The included music and sound-effevts especially can help me write the story; I look through the sound-effects and find one that surprises me and it may influence how I see te story I'm working on. Scratch is great if I want to come up with an idea for a arcade-like game. I've run into some really frustrating bugs in it though that seem to be engine problems, so I would only use it to prototype unrefined arcade mecahnics. I'm trying to build a library of clearly marked, easy to understand, simple scripts in Unity for prototyping. This involves including lots of public variables. I have a hard time still with keeping the scripts basic and general enough for this to work properly, but now that I know prefabs can be moved between projects, I think I'll be doing prototypes in Unity a lot more.
  14. The Big VR Thread

I'm excited about this. I hope the episode is still up by the time I get some hardware that can run it.
  15. Feminism

Just in case you feel that I am making an effort to malign the perspective you shared, I want to assure you that I'm not. I'm attempting to answer your question of whether or not a potential and/or actual discrepancy in a person's character can be discussed during a mobbing in a just and fair manner; and the answer is "No." I'm not at all making judgements about you or your intentions.
  16. Feminism

I haven't been following this case but I've seen this tactic before. This is pretty much exactly what victim-blaming or just-world hypothesis looks like. If someone is being attacked by a mob, then the only priority is to descalate and get them to safety. I don't think a crowd is the best group to judge a someone's possible crimes based off of impressions of their tweets while a mob is attacking them. If you are interested in debating the ethics of child-pornography, it would be best to discuss it as a generality rather than a damnable offense of one individual who happens to be in the midst of an ongoing mobbing. If you want to bring child-pornographers to justice, then I recommend dedicating yourself to a law-enforcement or social-welfare career.
  17. Rainbow Six: Siege has four german operatives and four "Spetsnaz" operators. The german operatives lean somewhat towards precision engineering (but in the case of Bandit, it's pretty low-tech). The russian operatives use really powerful offensive weapons (with the exception of Kapkan). I actually thought Thermite looked a lot like a german kid I knew in highschool, but it turns out he's an F.B.I. operator.

  19. Making Music. Tunes by Idle Thumbsters

My first reaction is "Keep doing it until it doesn't sound like an accident." I tend to enjoy musical pieces that sound a bit strange at first, but which I eventually become desensitized to the dissonance of. I suspect that musicians can get pretty far with me by just being able to express a little bit of dissonance confidentally. I'm sure there is a more technical approach too though. I'd like it if you uploaded a recording of your performance of the progression you described. My feelings in this remind me of a particular song that stuck with me, I have to find it and post it though it may be a little distracting and barely relevant more like "it always feels like an accidental" amirite?

    GiantBomb is livestreaming Oculus games.
  21. The Next President

I wonder if the decision makers in the DNC or RNC could reduce funding for primaries if they wanted to diminish the momentum of grass-roots candidates. I guess I'm saying "follow the money".
  22. The Next President

Are primary elections funded by the government? Or are they funded by the RNC and the DNC? Edit: From what I read during a super brief research-session, it looks like states fund the primaries just so they will have some relevance in the process I suppose. Also, I found out that Jill Stein is running as the Green Party's candidate.
  23. Intoxicated:

This is so much more interesting than "I'm drunk. I love you guys!"
  24. This is interesting. So would responding to that optimal strategy (of allowing the characters to become more and more insane) by adding a new system that makes the results of that strategy more difficult to deal with be a good design process? Or is the idea to have many optimal strategies?
