  1. This episode was remarkably fertile. I just listened and my mind is intimidated by the buffett which lies before it. Do you believe in hyperreality? If so, can you see how genre-silliness affects hyperreality?
  2. I Had A Random Thought...

I may qualify as a "left-wing nutjob" that your friends cite.
  3. Don't feel bad. Feel good. Expressing your opinion and having some people agree and some people disagree is what forums are for right? We get frustrated sometimes and try to calm it down if we are awesome, but we are likely here together because we share passion; so it makes sense that we sometimes get passionate. Bonus points if you don't make personal attacks. It can be hard for me to listen to opinions that are exclusive of my own, but re-reading posts is a good way for me to find out that people are different than me. Love it. I haven't seen a post on this forum by a person I wouldn't buy a coffee or beer for, we have so much to talk about!
  4. Dreams!

Seems like there is a recurring theme of you feeling the isolation of being to sole person who senses danger.
  5. Civ 5 Brave New World

For me, I kinda like that a game takes me a week or two to get through. I find myself at my job thinking "What am I going to do about Greece." then I come up with a strategy that will take centuries to pull off and play for a few hours when I get home. I like that pace and expect it from this game. It would be interesting to see how design decisions could offer various paces though. One thing I notice is that I play a lot faster with each match. I used to look around the map a lot before I was willing to cluck "next turn". Now I kinda just trust that everything I need to do will be prompted automatically. So I play more like an executive who is just having questions shot at them and answers them in quick sucession. The slowness of war is just one more motivation for avoiding it.
  6. So what you are saying is that Office Max is where hipsters like myself should go for a nice pen, moleskin, and maybe a game.
  7. Yeah, every time I go in there I pick Mount & Blade out of bin and start fantasizing about some business man coming in for a stapler and leaving with it.
  8. Now I want to go to Gamestop and pick up a game from the shelf and go "Hey! Is this better than FarCry 2?". After asking the clerk this until I receive an affirmative, I'll purchase the game and leave the store. Then I'll come back in a few hours and say "I'd like to trade this game in for Farcry 2." Also, I love the idea of listening to a parent and child looking around on the shelves. When the child asks if she can have Crusader Kings II, the parent will say "Isn't that the game where you can marry a baby, have babies with it and then kill your wife-baby to get your money back? I don't think so."
  9. I Had A Random Thought...

But there is no subject in that clause. Doesn't that make it dependent?Edit: Nevermind, I misread.
  10. I Had A Random Thought...

I just remembered that "understand" literally means "foundation". Under the stand is an understanding.
  11. I was in Office Max today and I saw that they had boxed copies of Crusader Kings II. I was surprised to see "A Nick Breckon power-fantasy" written on the back of the box and a quote from him that said (I'm paraphrasing) "The greatest wife-killing sim the world has ever known. Also, babies."
  12. GTA V

I can't wait that long! I'm an addict! Don't they know that, and that my pc is significantly more powerful than my console? Wow, I must be rich. When did that happen?
  13. I Had A Random Thought...

A lot of the time people on he internet assume that the commenter is being aggressive when they are just being sincere. I've found that it is worth my time to go to length about how i am just stating my opinion and I mean no insult. I was reading the Ren'Py forums once and I came across this preamble that amazed me: " I swear by the sutras whose wisdom guides me that I am not a troll. I am, by the sutras that guide me, a Buddhist who wants to write a story dealing with themes that interest me." I hope you are feeling better and that people calling you an asshole for expressing your honest opinion doesn't keep you from expressing your opinion in a compassionate and honest way.
  14. Your expectations of Idle Thumbs are much different than mine. The observations by Idle Thumbs that have brought me here are not dependent on comprehensive game comparisons. The reason I listen to the podcast is for the hypotheses about theoretical design stuff like how decisions you make in a game seem different than mistakes you make in real life and how that may be because the contextual motives are different. The only game I expect Idle Thumbs to play for comparison is the human experience (It was put out by Psygnosis in 1998) I'm joking, Psygnosis didn't make it, I'm actually talking about life, like how your mind wanders when you brush your teeth and you can't remember if you got those hard to reach back places.
  15. GTA V

This complicated things. I hope I know a release date by Sept 17, so that I can make a reasonable platform decision.
  16. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

I don't know if this is folk music, but it was the first thing I thought of: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=EY-Wb0YHvog Also, the musicians of Jajouka can do things to your brain. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=KSeRXVQkCWI Also of note, everything I've heard from Nonesuch Explorer Series of records blew my mind. Edit: Apparently Nonesuch still exists. Here is their African section
  17. You have to be even more specific than that, now that Blitz and Turbocross modes have been added. Super Crossfire mode of Super MNC is more similar to a LoMa than it is to a deep competitive shooter (good luck getting into a game to find that out though). I imagine that competing in the LoMa market may have been the motivating factor for how SMNC was originally designed, but the reason I feel the need to compare it to a LoMa is because if your team plays it like any other competitive shooter, you'll lose. New players come in thinking that it's about kill-to-death ratio and then get confused when their attacks do little to no damage mid-game while the other team is eating us. LoMa isn't as accurate as we can get though, it's more of a competitive-leveling team-laning game. Good show.

  19. Spelunky!

Just in case you don't know, you can also throw anything carriable upwards by holding up when you throw. That's my typical bat-killing method. I believe this includes mice, but I moght be wrong on that one. They might eat the mice or something.
  20. I can't stand it anymore; what is "soft pawing"? Since I've already admitted that I don't know, I might as well ask what being "Woody Allen" is and I have no idea what "can do posturing" means. I'm not sure if i am too old or too young to know these terms. Is "SO" an abbreviation for "significant other"? I'm so behind.
  21. Spelunky!

Once, I took the idol and the boulder rolled into a spot where it was blocking the exit. So, like any rational being, I decided to place a bomb at the base of the boulder to move it out of the way. It moved alright. It flew away and soon came rolling back at me. I died. It was awesome.
  22. Spelunky!

For me, Spelunky is largely about seeing something you want, knowing that you can get it, and then saying "nope." I'm pretty sure that it is incredibly rare for a level to be generated where you require a rope or a bomb to get to the exit, but it might tease you with a damsel that requires three bombs after you just got a crate of rope that required two. It's about prioritizing. You don't get to take everything, often I leave the damsel because he is just in too dangerous a spot. I'm only going to get one heart from him, and that's if I get him there alive. I guess what I'm trying to say is "There is no good reason for you to be stuck somewhere where you need a rope or bomb to get to the exit when you have none, you just got greedy."
  23. I just want to point out that I had "hipster" in my profile tag before any of you posers.
  24. If you decide to theme your game with porn-culture, reality-television celebritism, absurd material-wealth, and large scale sensless violence; then you have to know that you are pushing some of the consumer base away as you pull in the people who love that stuff.
  25. I Had A Random Thought...

Sorry if I concerned you all. I quit smoking a while back. I still want one right now, but I value my health too much. It was a hypothetical example. But I do hate seafood. I have no ability to imagine what it is that people like about it.
