  1. I just realized that the introduction into the Matrix in Saints Row 4 and the idealic, black & white portion of Fallout 3 are Garden of Eden allegories. I wonder if both of them were inspired by Pleasantville. I love the star pattern you made for the title-screen thing.
  2. I'm trying to think of worthwhile additions to the GTA toolset for interacting with random pedestrians: -selling whatever -graffiti -complimenting their hat -asking for directions -pan-handling The problem is that there are not many legitimate ways to interact with people on the street in real life, unless you are filling the role of your job. Oh man, it would be so cool if you could approach the victims in those traffic-system induced car accidents and administer first-aid in the proper fashion. Or if sometimes pedestrians were choking or they collapse and you can perform the heimlich or CPR. Today I'm going to steal a food-truck, drive it to the park in Los Santos and see if I can distribute tacos. Richard Scarry's Grand Theft Auto.
  3. Philosophy & Economics

Even if the Good Cop doesn't intentionally collude with the Bad Cop, the two of them together fill a role that is coercive. But that seems weird to claim that the Good Cop is coercive. Must everyone be accountable for their broader context?
  4. Movie/TV recommendations

Bladerunner is a good example because it feels more like a procedural. I can see why A Scanner Darkly would be included; there is a relationship between low-income drugs-use and surveillance-tech. It also has corporations mixing with political power. The reason I'm avoiding thrillers and horror movies us because I don't want to experience disturbing paranoia, so Brazil is out. That movie fucked me up. I remember Paparika freaking me out in a similar way. I guess I'm looking for something more Slice-of-Life in that setting, like Amelie or Daguerrotypes. Now that I typed it, I realize that it's an unreasonable request.
  5. Movie/TV recommendations

Are there any cyberpunk movies that aren't action movies, horror movies, or thrillers?
  6. Philosophy & Economics

I can't figure out if I am persuaded to go to my job and perform my duties on a regular schedule or if I am coerced to do so.
  7. Philosophy & Economics

I would say that the enforcement of the terms and conditions may be coercive, but that the contract is being used to legitimize that coercion.I suspect that contractual obligation is often used as a way to legitimize coercion. My understanding of "human-rights" is that they are basically things that a person cannot sign away. Even if they do sign their human-rights away, the contract has no illusion of legitimacy.
  8. Philosophy & Economics

I'm really interested in persuasion versus coercion because of its implications in the ethics of consumerism. I prefer to consume things that are produced through persuasion rather than coercion. The idea that the difference between the two may be the width of a spectrum of alternatives suggests to me that increasing the available alternatives (for those I suspect are being coerced) could improve my chances of consuming things produced through persuasion. If the difference is whether or not the person is making the decision in fear, then my chances of consuming products produced through persuasion could be increased by ensuring a sense of security for the workers I suspect are being coerced.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=_5Ue1ivG6Qg This is the best explanation I have seen for the question "What the difference between persuasion and coercion?" Edit: also, I have to mention that I love how the icon for the "the fallacy fallacy" is a fractal.
  10. Feminism

I tend to idealize more than I should. Our concept of child-care in this society is stupid in my opinion, so is our obsession with worker productivity. Any system that necessitates the separation of parents from their children for 40 hours a week is broken. What I'm trying to say is that your wife should be able to take the kids to work. And so should you.
  11. GTA V

The only way I found to skip it was to basically turn the tv off and hit the right trigger and "A" a bunch. For a while.
  12. Dreams!

I am so fascinated with instances where thought-processes are applied in surreal pairings during hypnagogic states. Thanks for sharing.
  13. That math stuff wasn't originally posted by you was it?
  14. iOS Gaming

Bad Piggies is a great game. You build vehicles to get to places and then you have to control when your bottle-rockets go off and that type of thing. If you have never made techno before, Figure is easy to use and satisfying. Wabash Cannonball is a board game adaption of Chicago Express. I enjoyed playing against the A.I. for a week or so. The Show Must Go On is a neat little game, it won't take you long to consume it, but the quality of the food is high. Backflip Madness has some poor design decisions, but I was intoxicated by it for a while.
  15. This is an interesting discussion I didn't get to participate in. I'm so glad that internet forums allow me to think of conversation in a non-disposable way. I hadn't heard the critical argument that Borderlands had sexist content. It's interesting.
  16. Netrunner!

    ohhhhhh.
  17. Feminism

thestalkinghead, in my fan-fic version of this thread you were the most prominent Feminist the world ever knew, but after a traumatic accident you became its most outspoken dissenter. Using your intimate understanding of the many challenges and inherent qualities of Feminist argument, you made your way onto the internet-forums to demonstrate the most subtle and covert methods of derailment you had witnessed on the throne. I'm still working on the ending, I'm thinking that you should pull some ICP shit and announce that the Dark Carnival is actually Christian evangelism (but you know, whatever the Feminist version of that is).
  18. Feminism

But look at the last three pages of the thread. I've gotten a lot out of the last three pages, but I can see how some of the people here could get tired of having all of their arguements responded to with "I am not being angry, you are, Mr. Angry pants."I could get just as much out of the last three pages if it was in a separate thread, and then when someone explains the difference between sex and gender, we can continue the discussion. If someone else insists on responding with a call for a more civil tone, we can link them to the other thread. After looking at the last three pages, can you see why that might be valuable?
  19. Feminism

When I read Tychocelhuuu's link about how the "tone arguement" tends to often derail discussions of feminism, it really rang true for me. I hate the idea that tone of an argument is off the table, but I'm also willing to accept that this happens a lot and it can make it so that in-depth discussion infrequent. Maybe a solution would be to have a separate thread where people can discusses the tone argument, so that the feminist thread doesn't get derailed. I agree that being angry is a bad idea, but after reading about concern trolling, I think that maybe I should address the arguments rather than the tone (when someone seems angry) and that the discussion is more likely to progress that way.
  20. Netrunner!

Why would the corp have to rez it again on the same run? Doesn't it stay?
  21. Feminism

Best thread evar. This is a new concept to me. http://geekfeminism.wikia.com/wiki/Concern_troll I need some time to think about it
  22. Netrunner!

How does the ice "cell portal" work. If the runner doesn't break its subroutine, does she have to go through all the ice on that server again? Or just the first one once more? Also, do any of the expansions include new agendas? Also, are there any expansions that are pretty much an additional runner deck? Or do they all just add a few cards to each runner type?
  23. Feminism

I'll look into it, I'm interested in finding some foundational canon too.
