I'm listening to episode 15 of Crate and Crowbar. The email about the person who played 20 hours of Oblivion thinking that the entire game would take place in Anvil (I'm not sure how they ended up there first, but whatever) was really neat. I love how perception of a game's scope can give the player these eureka-moments of ecstacy.

I'm a fan of putting the mattress on the floor.

Congratulations Hammer. I thought you were a goner a few times. When you managed to grab the moving block, I thought it had smashed you. Then you almost landed in the lava bombing for Olmec. It was fun watching you go into Hell, I've never been there.

I thought it was especially thought-provoking when Jenn Frank talks about how using things like cultural identities or life-experiences as symbols for game-mechanics reduces and belittles them; while using game-mechanics to demonstrate some of the complexity of life-experience or cultural identity can be communicative.

That was helpful, thanks for posting it.

Indeed. They aren't talking about the same thing every week even if they discuss the same game. One episode they discuss how Spelunky encourages "bite-sized game-play" and the contextual effects of Daily-Challenge versus regular play. On another episode they speak to what aspects of Spelunky encourages a Let's Play community around it (and even compare it to how other games may do the same). It's reductive to say that they are just talking about Spelunky. At the same time, I bet it's hard to figure out what to talk about on the spot. I interpret what they are saying as "We need to initiate discussion with a different subject so that we can look at the games we have been discussing with regularity, in a different context."

I got a Luigi's Mansion vibe.

Here is an explanation by Laura Shigihara, one of the designers of Indie Custom Cube (a Magic the Gathering parody that features indie-game development inside jokes), about how it is not racist or sexist or dismissive. http://shigi.wordpress.com/2013/10/24/my-response-to-the-indie-cube-comments/ Here is Jenn Frank's attempt to use Laura's explanation as a teaching moment. http://jennfrank.tumblr.com/post/65029638316/blog-comment-to-laura I enjoy this interaction because it displays how confusing these issues can be. Often people think that because they have anti-racist, anti-sexist intent (in general); none of their individual actions will promote white-supremacy, patriarchal power, or any other institutional-exclusionary tendency. Jenn Frank puts on the baby-gloves real good. She's a hero for reaching out like this IMO. As I was reading her response, I wanted to be like "triangle" after her first point and then be like "square" on her next. Then when she finished I was like "hexagon".

What types of decisions would a player make in a legit cooking game?

I can see the connection, good call.

Is the organization contacting you about the car a collection-agency or is it the bank you got the car-loan with? The reason I ask is because in my experience, collection-agencies can try to collect questionable debts that may be worth investigating before you agree to pay them. I suppose the same may be true for banks.

I wonder how Elizabeth Warren would play it. -Dr. Cornel West plays GTA V -Bjork plays Electroplankton -Frank Gehry plays Minecraft -Andy Goldsworthy plays Minecraft ... or maybe something that diesn't have as much freedom of resource-placement, like... I don't know. I gues i'll settle for Minecraft.

I enjoyed watching that. My favorite part was when you were contemplating murder and your ethics seemed to depend on which weapons you had available to you. When deciding that your lack of weapons is enough reason to let them live you find the freeze-ray and spend a good 10 seconds wondering if it changes the equation. That was my favorite part.
