Besides, we all know who really ruined video-games. Obama. He's taking all our guns away and establishing the One-World-Wet-Nurse-State right around the time all these not-games are showing up on Steam. Coincidence? Or Conspiracy?

Apparently she has said that she has feminist values and such in various places on the internet. The mob seems very upset with a a woman with a small amount of power identifying as a feminist. Also, there's some twitter status where she says that she designed robots so she may have some input into the game. Next thing we know someone on the team will turn out to be a muslim. Then we will see the shit-storm yelling that Mega-man CAN'T fast on Ramadan. I want a refund. I want to get into my thoughts on how currency is exacerbating the problem, but I will just mention it for now.

Here is a link to the comments in the Mighty no. 9 forum to get an idea of the overall tone (and a few people who try to evoke rationality). Also this odd Youtube video's comment section presents some of the overt misogyny that is running rampant.

I think that what this is a potential tipping point for, is realizing that minorities have significant additional challenges in achieving equal opportunity. As Twig mentioned, there will probably always be people with sociopathic tendencies. However, I believe that there is the potential in us to realize how all this fits together. I think that when a community declares a person or group as an enemy, sociopathic predators will see it as an opportunity to attack. When predators see that the larger community is no longer protecting a potential target, they are less deterred from victimizing. From my perspective, this is a important reason to criticize behaviors rather than criticizing individuals or specific communities. It bothers me that the center of a community will declare than an individual is an enemy and then when that individual (or group) is victimized beyond the intention of the community, the reaction is typically "I had nothing to do with that, but I guess they kinda had it coming." The Mighty No. 9 community needs to consider the totality of their responsibility for what has happened here and take an active role in changing what types of behaviors are seen as acceptable. My hope is that this instance will help some people understand that equality does not come by reaffirming that it already exists and decrying special treatment. Women and other minorities have challenges specific to them that must be accounted for if we want to create a circumstance of equal opportunity. We can't remove tendencies of violence, oppression, and favoritism; but we can accept that they are there and create buffers.

I'm playing Ghost Trick right now. I like how the puzzles seem very limited in possible permutations. It lets me flip a bunch of switchs in the environments like some sort of fabric children's book with zippers and buttons. I hate getting stuck in point&click adventures and I haven't had that type of frustration in this one yet. The story explains the game-mechanics a bit too thoroughly in the first scene, but I get excited about the animations.

What world do y'all live in where people get competitive jobs without knowing someone who works there? I'd like to visit. I've heard that in South Korea, you put your glamour-shot on your application. That seems uncomfortable. Who actually thinks that hiring is a pure meritocracy? You are delusional.

It's interesting that you bring up taste in movies and music changing. My taste in those has changed extremely over time.So i guess I should expect the same from my taste in games.

It's probably time to talk about game genres again.

I would lose my shit spitefully if Steam added a new genre called "art". Oh man, that would be vengefully hilarious. -

If Steam had a losted more genre-tags, would it reduce the bigotry on its forums? http://steamcommunity.com/app/229600/discussions/0/846944689687640883/ -

But they aren't. The existence of a new form does not remove the established existence of another. I would be very surprised to find out that there are fewer finished-games released than there were in 2009. It's just that now there are paid-alphas too.

This reminds me of why I need genres in the first place. So that I have clues about what various games have to offer before I buy them, install them and invest time in them. It's crazy to me that my best option to find out what games have any procedural rhetoric on the methods or effects of state-led welfare efforts is to first of all FIND the Idle Thumbs forums and then ask around. That shit should be in a searchable list of features. The reason I think it's crazy is that I can easily find songs, written works, or films on any given subject. I don't think its a matter of how large the pool is (when there are instances of the subjects I'm looking for being expressed in games), I think it's a matter of discoverability. -
It's funny, to me, those seem like good reasons to hire her as a community-manager.

There's no question that genres have uses, or that they are sometimes detrimental. I definately think that genres are due for some refinement so that they can better communicate the context that will help a noob appreciate the product. I've started reducing based on the decisions you make and the consequential states of those choices. Games where I am choosing which weapon to use on which enemy are losing their appeal for me, but I love Mass Effect and Dragon Age because I get to make decisions like "Is genocide an acceptable solution." So that's how I an trying to define genres. What types of decisions do you make and why are the consequences of those decisions interesting. -
What is an adventure game? I assumed y'all were talking about point&click adventures.

When Minecraft arrived, it was an incredibly compelling example if what PC gaming had to offer; not only because of the freedom of the mining and crafting mechanics, but also the production-model of paid-alpha. The darkness which you describe is probably just a matter of enough time passing for people to see the negative side of their wish's realities. It happens with everything that starts with a burst of excited speculation. But when I look at the totality of what Minecraft has grown into (as a product and a cultural force) I consider it to be progressive.

While everyone is mourning the literal meaning of "literally", I'm still confused about the difference in meanings between "sympathy" and "empathy". Seems like "sympathy" would be literally translated from its greek roots to "same emotion"; whereas "empathy" would be "inside emotion". I do not enjoy the idea that "sympathy" is merely an attempt to claim you feel the same wa... Oh wait, I get it now. If empathy is merely the capacity for sympathy, then by saying that you empathize, you are not claiming to know exactly how the person feels, you are just saying that you are capable of how that person feels. I guess I still don't understand. Empathy is the capacity for sympathy right? So if you are sympathetic, then empathy is a prerequisite. Why would someone claim that empathy is more appropriate when comforting someone than sympathy? Is it a time-based claim? Is the idea to have felt sympathetic to theoir emotion in the past and now you are empathetic because you don't feel that way now? I feel like I am not using these words correctly.

Have any of you seen Thomas in Love? I started watching it on Netflix-streaming a few years back and I was confused by the fact that I sat through the entire thing. Now as I'm flailing through the cyberpunk options (I tried to watch Avalon and Nirvana), I'm actually considering watching it again. Of the narratives I've seen, it seems to be the closest narrative to what I want to do with cyberpunk. Demonstrate banal, small-hope realities of the hyper-alienated individuals in a world where Mega-corps have so much control that they rarely need to resort to raw acts of violence. But I remember thinking "Why am I still watxhing this, this is so bad." the entire time.
