  1. Movie/TV recommendations

    I'm watching a K-drama with a X-files dynamic; she can see dead people, he is a no-nonsense business man. It has a much different tone than X-files and the first couple of episode are very Quantum Leapy, but the forced pairing of someone who believes and someone who does not is fun. The way the writer sets it in modern day is just by giving one of the characters a sixth sense that allows her to see things that can later be confirmed. http://www.viki.com/videos/1008739v-masters-sun-episode-1 They made the X-files just in time because there is something really cool about having a document of a pre-internet, TimeLife-Mysteries world. I often become nostalgic for the ignorant times, when a man named Ripley could travel the world after receiving letters which told him of amazing things that he had to see to believe; and the resulting newspaper comic-strip would surprise and inspire me more than the front page of Reddit. A new version of the X-files would probably be in the style of cops and would include as much snuff-film footage as is legally possible. Gross.

    I figured out how the controls work last night. This is a pretty fun game. The graphics and the "2D Minecraft" description turned me off, but many of my Steam-friends are playing Starbound and I had a copy of Terraria I never figured out how to play so... Of course, I'm immediately going to compare it to Minecraft; playing a Minecraftlike (hehehe) in 2D with a full-screen awareness fundamentally changes the experience for me. In a first-person survival-sim, I find myself orientated in every direction based on where I managed to find wood and coal. Then I dig myself a house for the night and wonder if there is a spider on my roof and what the zombie could be doing that is making so much damn noise. I might make a hole in the wall to try and watch. In Terraria, I know exactly what is going on outside when I'm hiding. I find myself managing my immediate circumstance rather than only what my character can see an hear. I feel like a autobiographical narrator; the full-screen awareness is similar in type to retrospect. It's a significant difference. I can finally empathize with people who say that they can only play in third-person. The other difference I notice after playing for only an hour is that the limitation of building in only two dimensions has benefits. I end up creating something that looks grand fairly quickly. And because I can see the whole screen, my two-dimensional accomplishments are more noticeable. In Minecraft, I'm constantly orientating myself and trying to visualize the space I'm carving in living-stone. In Terraria, the format does that for me. I also want to mention that I'm watching a Korean mini-series about a woman who sees dead people, but they stop bothering her when she touches a stand-offish rich dude; it writes itself. http://www.viki.com/videos/1008739v-masters-sun-episode-1 Anyway, the show has a duplicitous tone of normal urban environments and the haunted version of it. That tone is filling in the gaps of Terarria for me and it's a pleasant side-effect. After skimming the above posts, I don't know whether I should read about how to do everything or if I can discover it just by exploring. It seems a bit too complex for uninformed play. I think that happens with alpha-funded games because they are eventually developed with a player in mind who has already internalized early systems.

  4. The question of what makes something seem like it belongs to the fictional world in which it exists is an interesting one. This is the type of discussion that I listen to the podcast for. I think that games will eventually surpass the other artforms in this respect, largely because of my view on how that illusion is created effectively. My view of the world is that artifacts are created and shaped by the systems within which they exist. More specifically, I believe that worlds are filled with the artifacts of the method by which things are produced. Of course this is far too general to be of much use, but I see it as the direction that illusions are headed in. As games get more and more impressive with their procedural generation, I imagine that instead of populating worlds with hand-crafted art-assets placed directly with a few rules, they will begin to be filled with evolving AI's that develop ways to exploit the simulation for their own survival (leaving artifacts of their success behind). I think procedural-generation is going to lead games into worlds that are purely homeostatic systems that the player is able to explore. It'll be a while, but I've gotten a taste of what it's like andI love it.

    I imagine that it may balance things out a bit when I use "er" as a gender-neutral singular posessive. A big part of the reason I like the idea of using " e" is that it sounds like a shortened "he" or "she".

    We are cleaning and I've decided to throw the Netrunner box away. At the same time, I'm looking around the house for a box that can hold the cards and the tokens and still fit in my book-bag. It's such a nice box. Why would they make the box so nice? It makes it harder to throw away.

I would think that using their name would have the same 3rd-person effect as "they", but it doesn't feel like it does.   14. This isn't true, but I think it would be fun to pretend that it is: In March of 2013, I joined the Idle Thumbs forums for one reason, and one reason alone: rare TF2 hats. After studying wikis of item rarities, I discovered an opportunity like no other. Like a sunken Spanish galleon less than a mile off of the Florida Keys, the idle thumbs podcast crew had a trove of treasure in their steam library; but first, I would have to gain their trust. I began to write passioned prose and manifestos, styled and themed by views I uncovered and formulized by listening to years of podcasting. Soon, I would be selling Sam's severed-head for a cool $600. I planned for everything, the method, the motive, the alibi. But there was one thing I forgot to take into account; I forgot to plan for the possibility that I would fall in love with the Idle Thumbs community. I was the man on the inside for the long-con. As debates about men's rights and the true rhetoric of Civilization 5 drew me into the colagulation of wonderful people here, I began to forget what I had come in for, I started to build a new life for my self; a new life... where we could run off alone... together.

    I think I'm going with "e" as my default gender-neutral singular pronoun. It sounds better to me than "they", which I typically use for plural. I'm trying to write a story where the main character's gender is not relevant and this has been a constant struggle.

    I'm at a coffee shop waiting for the men's room to open up so that I can wash my hands. The women's room is free. I totally would go in there to wash my hands, but I would feel uncomfortable for the remaining time in the coffee-shop.
  20. Movie/TV recommendations

    I enjoyed The Lone Ranger. I saw it the day after watching Elysium and find myself comparing the two. The Lone Ranger reminded me of how much I enjoy implication of magical-realism through a selective narrative; all of the magical elements in the movie can be explained in a rational world, but the audience can see why characters may perceive the cause of events differently because of the order and perspective from which the story is told. Elysium borrows a faith that everything works out; The Lone Ranger demonstrates how circumstances solve themselves into an inevitable ideal through the use of the partially understood, emotion-filled motives of multiple actors. Or maybe the only difference was which one suspended my belief more skillfully. I'm particularly interested in how these two movies differ in their attempts to come up with a solution for systemic injustice. Both films treat injustice as a curse that inherently must resolve itself, but they promote different methods for the heroes. I'm still putting my thoughts together on it.

    You are right to feel uncomfortable about early-access games. Don't buy them until they are complete if you don't want to test an unfinished game. Of course, if you want to play and test an unfinished game, early-access may be for you.
