I don't even know what a respectful representation of a character's transgender experience would look like.

What's black and white, black and white, black and white, and black and white?

It doesn't seem fair to prejudge an attempt to represent a minority character based on the artist's race or location. I don't see how grouping all Japanese developers together in their efforts and abilities is useful to anyone.

One of the comments: TeiwazUMrMiyamoto11L " any simulation is a set of assumptions. So there is bias in any simulation, depending on how you look at it. A lot of people thought when they played SimCity we were really biased to mass transit. It's interesting. One of the fun things is that a model like that gives you something to reflect against. In fact, when people start arguing with the model, that's when I think it's been successful. First of all you have to clarify your internal model — how does a city really work? Most people, they'll kind of roughly describe it, but they've never really thought in detail what the linkages are between different things. But when they're playing a game like SimCity, which is one set of assumptions, it clarifies their own internal assumptions. And then, when they can start arguing with it, it's crystallized in their internal model to the point where they can now argue against that model, so in some senses I think that's the point of it." - Will Wright, SimCity designer In games, the simulation and the rules are the message. Even if you don't intend there to be one, your game means something, just like every other medium. All you're doing is losing control of what it means. And the point of this article is that currently, Prison Architect means prisoners are cheap slave labor, and compulsively violent animals. Based on the authored tutorial at the start of the game, which includes a prompt for the player to think about how humanely death-row inmates should be treated, that's not what the designers intended. Pointing this out is an important part of proper criticism and analysis. It what makes games better. If you want blinking lights and an arbitrary score out of 100 to a precision of two decimal points, go back to the 80's. Today 5:15pm

Later on, you get a character that can replace some of your armor, but I'm not aware of one that can replace your health. The "rest" option allows you to regain a willpower point (represented by the yellow star). The willpower points are used for special abilities and exertion. Exertion (represented by the green chain that is breaking) is how much extra damage you can do, armor you can break, or spaces you can move beyond your normal ability (if you have the willpower for it). If you are having trouble winning the battles, this may help. I apoligize if you already know this: Damage is typically calculated in this way: the attacker's health minus the targets armor. I'm pretty sure that armor-break is a constant. So if your character has 3 armor-break, they can remove three armor even if their health is low. This is way different than attacks which are determined by how much more health the attacker has over the armor of the target. Usually, when people lose, it's because by the end of the match, the opponents armor is far higher than the player's health. This means that you only have a chance to do one point of damage. So let's suppose that you have two characters that both have 10 health, 10 armor, and 3 armor-break (the blue shield number). Bill does a strength attack on Sasha, doing 1 point of damage to Sasha's health (10 strength against 10 armor will still have a 100% chance of doing 1 damage) Bill 10a/10h Sasha 10a/9h Sasha does 3 points of damage to Bill's armor instead of doing a strength attack (how much armor you remove is determined exclusively from the attacker's armor-break number represented by the blue shield; it has nothing to do with how much armor the target actually has, or how much health the attacker has). Bill 7a/10h Sasha 10a/9h Bill does another strength attack (10-10 = 1(minimum limit)) Bill 7a/10h Sasha 10a/8h Sasha now does another armor-break (7-3=4) Bill 4a/10h Sasha 10a/8h Bill does another strength attack (10-10 = 1(minimum limit)) Bill 4a/10h Sasha 10a/7h Sasha does another armor-break for 3 (4-3=1) Bill 1a/10h Sasha 10a/7h Bill does a strength attack (10-10=1(minimum limit)) Bill 1a/10h Sasha 10a/6h Sasha now begins to do strength attacks because Bill's armor is very low. 6(Sasha's remaining health) - 1(Bill's remaining armor) = 5 damage Bill 1a/5h Sasha 10a/6h Now Bill doesn't even have enough strength/health to have a 100% chance to hit. He receives a 10% penalty for each point of strength lower than Sasha's armor. 5 (Bill's strength) - 10(Sasha's armor) = -5. -5x10%= a 50% chance to do 1 point of damage. Bill misses. Bill 1a/5h Sasha 10a/6h Sasha does another strength attack (6-1= 5 damage). Bill is dead, Sasha has 10 armor and 6 strength to take out someone else.

I don't know that I'm going to do this, but having the ability to appreciate the game this way is fucking cool.

Vr-kits can be called "cyber_decks" and the programs can be called "cyber_spaces". Yeah, I went there. -Holos -Realities -Routines

I haven't ever seen what Spelunky Classic looks like, Tegan. After doing some Game Maker tutorials and then playing my daily, I watched that. I am saying things to myself like, "Oh, every sprite has an object." and "Does the shotgun have the shooting event as part of it's attributes, or does the character (if shotgun == True)?" How impressive that game is. I bet there is a lot to say about how Game Maker affected it's design.

The supplies-system is messed up. I'm pretty sure that I have bought supplies in a town and then have them not show up once we start trekking (I'm talking about buying a large quantity of supplies and them not showing up). I completely agree about the buying supplies with renown. I would prefer supplies to be based entirely on the decision-instances.

You can sack characters, but I wouldn't ever. The only reason you would is if you ran out of space in your barracks and if that was the case, I would buy extra barracks-space. Someone might consider the game grindy if they were impatient to get to the upgraded units. Personally, I enjoy playing matches with characters who haven't leveled at all as much as I do with characters that have been leveled. Because you can only play matches against teams of the same power-level, I don't think that having fully upgraded characters is as valuable as having many characters at all possible levels.
-
You earn reknown and can spend it on upgrading persistent party members or expanding the capacity of your barracks (make it so you can have more party members available to you). You are matched with players who have a roster with the same quantity of upgrades. So for instance, I upgraded all 6 of my units once, then I expanded my barracks so I could have more than those 6, then I used reknown to hire 6 more units that I could upgrade in a different path (once). You can upgrade units more than once, but I like having variety available and matches above power-level 6 are more rare.

Maybe virtual-reality games will be as significantly different as board-games are to video-games or arcade-games. Here is hoping that they will get a better name than "VR-games". Let's take the matter into our own hands. Anyone got sweet canidate names for games developed for and played with the Oculus Rift?

For every kill, you get an extra point of willpower that can be used with any of your characters.

Banner Saga: Factions is free. The first couple of multiplayer matches are pretty stressful, but if you can stomach it you'll be able to get a good idea of what is so special about this combat system. I love Factions, it's a satisfying chess-like.

When Moses is getting ready to drown the Egyptians, he's going "Wait for it...wait for it..." and then when he lowers his staff the dub-step kicks in. Dub-step should also be used for the walls of Jericho scene. It's not that we haven't wanted to make a bible game, it's just that the technology wasn't there yet, or the dub-step.

I saw this comment on a blog and I think it's a neat idea to consider. Could various game-mechanics evoke different receptions for information? I'm pretty sure that they do, but I'd love to explore the idea in these terms.

I hadn't heard about the repitilian shape-shifters before. As I look through some of Youtube evidence, I enjoy the idea that people are ecstatic when their electronic devices begin to wear enough that the truth can be revealed during non-optimal playback or they may be intentionally bending their consumer electronics to separate the illusion from the reality. Is the idea that loud noises can distort the illusion an accepted part of the myth? This is some great fiction. Now I want a game where you play as a dj who makes some sick beats and accidentally discovers that the crowd is actually 70% reptilian. Then she walks around with an air-horn and goes Bphew! Bphew! Bphew! Bphew! at tattoo-parlors to reveal the infiltrators. This could be the next Twilight. The Secret World is on sale today, this conversation is making me consider it.

Are you talking about You must be ridiculously good at this game if you thought for a moment that you could beat it. I looked at the numbers involved, backed away to avoid its first strike and then watched as it killed me immediately.
