I love the Steam tags. I browsed by things like "female protagonist", "cyberpunk", and "visual novel" last night. This will prove useful to me.

On the Rebel FM podcast, they were talking about how they had to take things to the next level after becoming the dominant gang. They did the natural thing, they became the server's police force. They claimed that as soon as they changed their names to things like " Police Chief Whatever", other players started calling them in global chat to investigate lootings or stop a raid in progress. They said they had a batman-problem where their existence created an antithesis.

I was thinking the same thing. If I had read this conversation on Monday, I would have skipped it and said "Unity sounds to complicated." Now I'm reading it and saying "Do I have to add the script as a component to every object that I want to pull a value for?" Which may not make any actual sense, but it's the difference between trying to read this gibberish and skipping it.

Is EA in charge of the multiplayer-networking or is Respawn? I'm certainly curious about Titanfall. I'm especially interested in the idea that the defacto scale of the match changes mid-game. I've enjoyed playing multiplayer Call of Duty for years, this may freshen it up a bit. I hope I get into the beta to find out because the idea of paying three times the amount I'm used to for a type of game that I may have lost my taste for, is a substantial hum tto overcome.

Best thread evar!

I have been told that I must make sure to distinguish Java from JavaScript.

This guy is clearly enjoying himself. Is there a computer-game terrain artist that is known for being incredibly influential like Sesshu Toyo or something? That's awesome. Thanks for the warning.

I'm doing this tutorial: http://unity3d.com/learn/tutorials/projects/space-shooter Once I got to 105 "Moving the Player", it expected me to write script. I'm sure I could have eventually figured out how to copy and paste properly, but I took it as an impetus to learn enough to know what I am doing. I just watched a couple of Youtube videos about choosing between JavaScript and C# for use in Unity and the consensus seems to be that c# is capable of more (but not anything I will ever use) and JavaScript is a bit easier for beginners. One honest looking fellow in a fushia jacket in front of a bunch of textured metal confidently told me that it I learn JavaScript and then decide to switch over to C#, then it won't take me very long because I will still have the programming fundamentals. Code Academy's lessons are fun (based on my experience learning some Python there) so I'm probably going to do it there. I like earning badges. http://www.codecademy.com/tracks/javascript

So I hit a brick wall when the Unity tutorial I was working on required me to code. I'm going to learn how to code for a little while until I am at least somewhat familiar with what is going on. Folk in the IRC channel were saying that I can learn C# or JavaScript for Unity. I was thinking that I should learn C#, but then this morning I saw that Code Academy has JavaScript classes and not C# ones. I like Code Academy. If I use JavaScript in Unity, will I be missing out on any essential functionality? Also, I'm going to add the IRC channel to the first post in the thread. I had a great time hanging out with y'all yesterday and last night.

I have no idea what I'm doing with the Trello thing, so if anyone wants admin status or to just join, send me the information I will need to add you.

If it wasn't on Idle Thumbs, then it was on the Gamers With Jobs Podcast. I remember it too. Maybe the idea is just so good that it is poking through the ether in many places.

I downloaded Trello. Thanks, this may prove useful. I made an Idle Thumbs group on Trello. I haven't used it enough to really understand how useful it might be. I do like the progress bar on my checklist though. https://trello.com/amateurthumbs So which one of us is going to be the Bob Ross of Unity one day? http://youtu.be/Qv82XOAENZY?t=40m23s

I was attracted to Little Big Planet for similar reasons.

Indeed, and when themes are expressed within those limitations, there is a cleverness to it similar to solving a really good puzzle.

Now that I know What Could Go Wrong? is going to have a social dynamic aspect, I'm way more interested in it. I just hope it's not gorey.

This dude is so close to me that it is scary. I do it to myself though. I'm currently wearing a shirt of the same color with a sharpie drawing of a weasel and a boat on it (and some geometric doodles). I even have a similar hat on(but with no earrings). I shit you not. I'm going to go take a picture. I fuckin told you. Selfies in the Feminism thread; this is how my Monday morning is going.

Progress Report #1 What was my goal for the week? Did I accomplish my goal? -No. I posted two updates (including the idea above). What challenges did I face? -I took a few extra shifts this week, got kinda addicted to playing Rust, and decided to abandon Game Maker long enough to see what this Unity-hype is about. What steps can I take to increase my progress -The decision to consider changing the game-making program is a significant set-back. I'm resistant to doing it because it puts my Dance-Game project on an indefinite hiatus (adding to the many projects I have started that I may never finish). But learning Unity is something I'm excited about and enthusiasm is the most valuable thing in this world. I'm going to go ahead and accept that I have abandoned my goal for a new one, might as well do it at the beginning. So I'll be writing a new goal for the next coming week. What is my long-term goal? -Make the dance-game. What is my goal for week #2? -Watch tutorials 2-6 on this page and have Unity open during it so that I can mimic what dude is talking about in order make sure I comprehend it. What challenges am I likely to face and what steps can I take to prepare for them? -Amnesia Fortnight is going to suck up a lot of my available time. + I can make progress on my goal while waiting for a time when Capt. Hastings and I can watch the documentaries together. I can limit my consumption of the Twitch-feed by making a rule that I'm only allowed to watch it if I am currently on schedule for completion of week #2's goal. -I might start getting into material that doesn't seem applicable to the dance game and feel like I don't need to watch it. + I can be open to coming up with tiny experiments with which to apply those portions. As I begin to see how to make the dance-game in Unity, I should apply those techniques in a separate project. So I'll have two Unity-projects, one for things that may be applicable to the dance-game and one that will be for things that do not seem applicable.

You have funny dreams. I kinda like the idea of a game that is based on being a booster for other players who didn't read in between the lines of the codex. It won't be long before someone makes a game where te twist is that the villian is the one who wrote the achievements and you've been doing their bidding THE WHOLE TIME and it was entirely optional. In the moment of shock and recognition, the villian looks at you and says "Gotta get those cheevos. Mu-ha-ha-ha-ha!!"

As I'm learning how to create objects , translate, rotate, and scale them in the scene, all I can think is how much cooler this would be if I was using an Oculus Rift. Unity is the VR world I was promised.

Nothing like having your wife read aloud one of your posts from a month ago to make you realize that you're a total weirdo.

I am using Chrome. Oh well. If it's working for other people it's not as bad as I imagined. Edit: I did the thing you said. It works now.

The game doesn't load for me.

This is brilliant. The shmup would have to be slow paced, but I love the concept. If the shmup portion became more and more of a back-burner, I would be entertained by that.
