Idle Thumbs 145: Rich Uncle, Cool Uncle
clyde replied to Chris's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
In reference to simple and repeatitive meditation-games that put the knives through the clock: I'm playing 7 Grand Steps and it manages to give me that thoughtless experience I want from a casual game, but it manages to reward me with a family's storied history. The game mechanics are similar to Pegs and Jokers without the griefing or precision. For the most part you are just trying to choose which space to move to with the hand you are dealt in order to accumulate more cards (tokens in this case) or xp. It's simple; it's mind numbing; I barely have to think, but it keeps my brain busy enough that I think of nothing else. One of the things that this game accomplishes where others of its ilk fail, is that I don't feel like I just killed time after I've played for an hour or two. I suspect that the reason is because the game creates a narrative through authored anectdotes of the player-characters' lives that mix with auspice-like game-mechanics. Instead of feeling like I'm having withdrawl, I end up feeling like I just visited one of those museums that has dioramas of early agriculture societies like Spaceship Earth or the Semitic Museum at Harvard. -
I'm not having this problem at all.

I like how the Monday Night Combats encourage players to pay attention to what their team is doing. One could argue that the hardpoint mode does this, but holding a point feels different than pushing a lane. Titanfall has the potential to get more people interested in the first-person shooter Lords Management format. It would be more interesting if I was losing ground while flanking the titans or waiting to call my titan for a solid push IMO.
-
Am I the only one who thinks it would be cool if one of the modes was a symmetrical map with an increased amount of grunts that spawned at a regular pace; where each team has a point to defend whose shield could only be taken down by grunts?

Does anyone know the break-down of xp values? Does xp build you titan faster? How much xp do you get for killing enemy players, titans, bots? Also, how do you know that the pilot of the titan you are braining has ejected? I seem to have a problem with noticing that when it happens.
-
Best thing about the friendly bots is that sometimes they drop-pod right where I spawn so I'm not the only target and I can get away. I could run around killing minions with my smart pistol all day; I don't give a fuuuuck.
-
I knew about the mechs and the jump-jets. I did not know about the smart-pistol. It reminds me of the katana from the Shadowrun FPS for some reason; an assassination weapon that can largely determines how you play the game.

Are there sweet jumps?

One thing I'm enjoying about this game the more I play is night-time. At the beginning of my lives, I have nothing to do at night-time but sit around a campfire and global chat. I just had a great conversation with someone who was saying that friendliness is nothing but a survival-strategy. The conversation was framed as "This game is just like real life." I recounted my an instance from a week ago where me and two other naked dudes who I had never met before ended up sharing chicken over a campfire and how it was greater than the sum of it's parts.

I just recently watched a documentary about the influence of the Fukushima-disaster on the robotics-industry. They explain how humanoid designs are capable of traversing many types of terrains and accomplishing general tasks. There was a whole section about the debate between a hand-design that is specialized for turning valves or a more human-like hand.

Did The Cineaste ever make it in? The suspense is killing me! I wonder if I was wrong about including the hash-tag.

Just open this with your web-browser http://webchat.quakenet.org/ Then type anything in "nick" and "#idlethumbs" in the channels blank.

I'm looking forward to watching the development of Little Pink Best Buds. How cool would it be if they manage to make a village of unique characters that vary wildly in interaction for the prototype? It would be a neat little thing to explore.

Just picked this up from the Humble Bundle. I really enjoy this game. I agree with everything the two of you said. Besides the one-more-turn aspect and the way it manages to feel like a casual game even though it spans generations, I really like how mechanics that appear absurdly orthogonal begin to create stories; the parent that labors into old age for the sake of giving their children opportunity, accumulation of capital within a family, the occasional exacerbation of separation between wealth and classes. The game makes me think about all sorts of interesting things even though most of the time I'm just making Candy-Landesque decisions. Demo

My vote is for: "Game Development"

That is a sick jump. So it that track made of terrain? Or is it all created objects?
-
What's the sub-forum going to be called?
-
Little Pink Best Buds.
-
You can plug an xbox 360 controller into your pc.
-
I also find this concerning.
-
Humble Bundle has a counter with 20-some minutes left, so I hopefully not.

Something is going on on their stream: http://www.twitch.tv/doublefine

Episodes 201, 202, and the beginning of 205.

Can you be a bit more specific?
-
Do you have to have opened the game in order to tag it?
