  1. IDLE THUMBS 200

Ha, I was about to bring up this exact same thing.
  2. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I can't understand how you could possibly have understood our previous comments to be against her in any way, shape or form. If anything, the response in this thread was more against how other people used her words rather than what she herself said. I saw what went on in her Twitter feed; that shit is terrible. The reason I brought up my concerns about those ideas here rather than her Twitter feed was precisely because I knew what kind of garbage she'd be receiving, but I figured this forum was somewhere where people could have reasonable, thoughtful discussions without worrying about them being misconstrued or hurting others. Even after that, I still shared her post with others because I think it's an important thing to talk about. I just had some specific thoughts to share in the conversation. You've been taking any comments in this conversation in the worst faith possible.
  3. Movie/TV recommendations

This is absolutely not the case as the show progresses. Brooklyn Nine-Nine does as good a job as any sitcom of making each of its characters unique and interesting.
  4. Super Metroid Appreciation Station

That's not true. I played Super Metroid on Wii Virtual Console with a Gamecube controller. Don't know if that works on Wii U though.
  5. I agree that a theme would be good. I've suggested this before, but I think "dumb game ideas made up on the podcast" would be a good theme.
  6. Been playing a bunch of this lately and I've remembered something that doesn't often get mentioned about Majora's Mask: it has the most fun traversal mechanics of any Zelda. Between the Deku flower flying, Goron rolling, Zora swimming, Bunny Hood and Epona, getting around in Majora's Mask is really entertaining in a way that it isn't usually in Zelda.
  7. I might be interested in this. When would it take place?
  8. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

EDIT: Nevermind, the discussion has clearly run its course.
  9. Super Metroid Appreciation Station

I think Zero Mission is generally considered the second-best 2D Metroid, after Super.
  10. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Yeah, I also want to make it clear that I don't mean to criticize her at all. Archiving video games is something that should definitely be done; I'm very glad she's doing it; I'm dismayed that she has to fight to have it recognized as important; and I'm angry that GG has made it harder for her to do so. But I'm just as upset at the school she's at. Basically, I think this is as much a problem with certain branches of academia as it is with GG in particular.
  11. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Irishjohn, you and I should talk. I think our research interests are quite similar.
  12. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

I think board comes from Pac-Man.
  13. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I'm really confused by this. Not that I don't believe her or agree with her: I'm just don't understand why a department would cut funding for video game research based on GG. I'm in history, not archiving, but in my department GG seems to have greatly increased the interest in video games - or at least "Gamers" - as a topic of study. A hate group forms out of a hobby based on consumption? I can think of like, a dozen dissertations of the top of my head that you could write about that and they'd all be really interesting. I know if I end up doing a PhD, the significance of my topic will trade at least a bit on the impact of GG. Maybe archiving's different, I guess. Maybe if you're focused more on the physical - or digital - objects of vidoe games, it's harder to justify keeping them around when people use them as a launching pad for terrorist activity. But still, that sounds like bullshit to me. Archives keep all sorts of seemingly trivial or hateful stuff. I can't think of how an good archivist - let alone a whole department - could argue that saving video games isn't worthwhile. So yeah, the effect of GG is absolutely shitty here, but her department's also completely in the wrong for being so reticent to let her take up that project, especially since they seem to have been skeptical even before GG.
  14. Feminism

It's also worth noting that those terms and time periods are necessarily simplified shorthand, connected to specific movements and places. "First wave feminism" was by no means the first time women argued for their rights and "third wave feminism" is a notoriously loose construction, since there's a ton of complexity in current feminist discourse. I think some people even argue that we're really more in a "fourth wave" right now.
  15. Life

The weirdness surrounding the second-person plural pronoun is one of my favourite aspects of English. "Y'all," "Yous" "You guys" "Yous guys" and apparently "yinz" and "you lads." It's so fascinating to me. It gets especially interesting when the possessive is thrown in there, because you see the hoops people have to jump through in order to make it work. So you get stuff like "your guyses" which is my personal favourite pronoun.
  16. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I'm pretty sure they do have another, paid, security team.
  17. Quitter's Club: Don't be afraid to quit the book

I'm thinking about reading Monte Cristo in French. I read The Three Musketeers in English and then in French, because I had owned the book for ages, but I regretted it because that book is so boring. But I've heard much better things about Monte Cristo and am quite familiar with the story, so I think going through in French would be fun.
  18. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

    Sooooo tempting.
  19. Life

The main problem here is that even if crazy were negative (which I think is debatable), it's not specific. People have been called crazy for any number of reasons: Tourette's syndrome, ADD/ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Anxiety, being gay, being trans, being bi, being queer, being horny, non-conformism. "Crazy" lumps all those things together and says they're all bad, all indicative of an inferior mental state. That's something that should be avoided.
  20. Didactic Thumbs (Pedantry Corner)

To me, a tone argument criticizes the way a point is made, rather than its content and in a way that doesn't link the one to the other. All three of those statements are a bit too surface level to illustrate what I'm saying but basically, if an argument boils down to "if you said this exact same thing, but in a nicer way, I would agree with you" that's a tone argument, whereas "you're saying things in a way that contradicts or confuses the point you're making" is totally valid.
  21. Life

My brother's had "spastic" used against him and I know that it upsets him (or at least has in the past - haven't talked about it in a long time), so I avoid it and cringe when I hear it.
  22. IDLE THUMBS 200

    Somebody needs to buy bag.horse.
  23. Social Justice

That post reminded me of something I thought of the other day: I want somebody to make a browser plug-in that switches every instance of "radical" to some other 80s/90s slang. "Today the President revealed a tubular plan to save Obamacare." "I have to say, I don't agree with the bodacious tone of these comments."
  24. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Yeah, the phrasing of "truce" was weird and I don't know a lot of Brianna's past politics, but it's kind of weird to condemn somebody for having coffee with a person.
