  1. Idle Thumbs 213: Build the Nublar

The discussion on penis-centric games reminded me of this, from the upcoming game Shower With Your Dad Simulator 2015: Do You Still Shower With Your Dad?
  2. Idle Thumbs 203: Goat Impossible

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXfbpBlTo6M There's also been a few other ones at previous marathons
  3. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I think it's more that "don't feed the trolls" came from an understanding that trolling meant going into an anime forum and posting "anime sucks" and didn't mean targeted harassment of an individual.
  4. Awesome Games Done Quick 2015

Awesome Games Done Quick is an annual weeklong speedrun marathon running from january 4th to january 10th 2015. Last year, we raised just over a million dollars for the prevent cancer foundation. When it starts, you'll be able to watch here: https://gamesdonequick.com/ Games: https://gamesdonequick.com/schedule Prizes: https://gamesdonequick.com/tracker/prizes/12 Bid Wars: https://gamesdonequick.com/tracker/bids/12 I know that the IT crew missed most of this last time around, so hopefully this topic gets it on their radar sooner rather than later.
  5. Does anyone else find it strange that it took leland basically a full day from deciding to go and tell the sheriff about the poster to actually showing up and telling them? I remember him in the previous episode rushing out of the office to go do it.
  6. Awesome Games Done Quick 2015

The marathon has started now. The reddit vods thread is here: http://www.reddit.com/r/speedrun/comments/2ra5rw/agdq_vods_thread_2015/ Seems like all of the vods are going to be muted by twitch, though.
  7. I find Ed's story as to how Nadine lost her eye very suspicious. Why were they hunting pheasant with buckshot? Lots of unanswered questions. Highly suspicious.
  8. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I tried to look up anagrams for "jake rodkin", but I made a typo and the first result was "a kid jerkin"
  9. Idle Thumbs 186: Doctor DNA

It might be a sound from yoshi's story. Much like how the gba version of lttp had link doing all the hups and hyaahs from ocarina of time.
  10. Twin Peaks Rewatch 8: The Last Evening

This episode breaks the "one episode a day" scheme that has been going on for entire series up to this point. This means that the first season takes place over the course of exactly one week. It seems a little odd, considering that from the viewer's point of view, each episode is separated by a week, but it all seems to fit together. Are there any incongruities that arise from this that anyone has noticed over the course of the season?
  11. Twin Peaks Rewatch 7: Realization Time

Re: moonchat in the podcast. Both the full moon in the previous episode and the waxing half moon in this episode are wrong. The correct phase of the moon for the night of March 1st 1989 would have been a waning half moon. Furthermore, the moon didn't rise that night until 4 am, but cooper says that "the night is young." Clearly this flagrant disregard for continuity has forever tainted the show, and what was once brilliant has now become unwatchable.
  12. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Where are all the "moderate" gamergaterors? Those who are just concerned with journalistic ethics? I keep being told that they exist, but it mostly seems to be about anti-feminism. I don't think they see a difference between the two. "Feminist", to them, is just another word for "corrupt journalist." Like, it doesn't seem at all odd to them that the works of anita sarkeesian are somehow related to journalistic ethics. And, also that simultaneously these views are expressed:"Anita is a professional victim and wasn't actually harassed" and "We don't support harassment against our enemies. Other people did that." It also seems to be commonly accepted that anita made up the fact that she plays video games. It takes a certain amount of conspiratorial thinking to believe that everything she says about her personal life is whole cloth lies, and all the information about games that she has is fed to her by a male colleague.
  13. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

You are dehumanizing the proponents of gamergate whatever you call them. It's a natural consequence of being in opposition with them. You can't just change what terms you use and have it be premptively solved. It's something that you have to actively try not to do. If you see a guy on twitter posting about gamergate, you think "oh look, a gamergater troll. This poster is an ideology made manifest" and not immediately "oh look, a person with their own set of complex emotional experiences who has decided, for reasons yet unknown, to post with a hashtag." Otherizing is just a thing that happens. It makes thinking easier. If you don't want to do it, it takes a lot of effort.

They believe that everyone on the other side is part of a conspiracy. Patrick Klepek writes about indie games and social issues because he is on the dole from big indie, and not because those are genuinely his interests. Nobody actually believes in social justice, all of gaming press is just wrapped around the thumb of a broke indie dev. It's amazing how much conspiratorial thinking is going on to make them always right. Death threats are false flags because nobody on the good side would seriously do anything bad. So, it must have been the bad side. Arguments are then born out of that sentiment, rather than out of a desire to uncover the truth. That's a kind of thinking that everyone engages in occasionally, but with GG, it seems that there's no feeling that that sort of thinking is bad. To them, it doesn't matter if it's false because the SJWs deserve whatever they get. What I really don't understand is why the supposed "rational side" still jumps to the defense of the hostile side. Like, on the giant bombcast, all they essentially said was "People shouldn't issue death threats or intimidate people into leaving their jobs." How could anyone disagree with that? But, you still had people (lots of people) claiming that this was an attack on GamerGate, a movement for promoting journalistic ethics, and definitely not a harassment campaign.
  15. Feminism

It seemed like it was sincere to me. It's a very common sentiment. Some people don't really understand why it's bad to say things like "If you don't want to get raped, then you shouldn't dress a certain way." They understand that rape is bad, and that rapists target people who are dressed a certain way, so to them it's practical advice for ending rape. They don't see the whole picture, about how such advice runs counter to the goal of stopping the cultural perpetuation of rape.
  16. Idle Thumbs 177: The Good Ones

    Relating to BTTF: http://martymcflyinthefuture.tumblr.com/
  17. Idle Thumbs 177: The Good Ones

For weird unlicensed donkey kong games, I recommend Donkey Kong 5: The Journey of Over Time and Space. It's a gbc game that uses sprites and music from various other games (mostly not donkey kong) to remake Super Mario Bros 1. I just love that the first thing you hear when you start playing is the music from pokemon pinball.
  18. The difference here is that there doesn't exist a world outside where it is acceptable to murder people. Not the same can be said of sexism. Also, they are different in that one is a merely a representation of an action, while the other is a way of presenting things that enforces beliefs. Depictions of violence aren't the problem in the same way that depictions of sexism aren't the problem. It's not about the fact that male heroes are being sexist, it's about the fact the hero is always male. e: I'm not saying that depictions of violence in media isn't a problem. It's just that they are contextualized by their message. The message is the problem. Having the main character heroically kill nameless enemies enforces an us vs them world view, but doesn't enforce a worldview where you can just go around killing people.
  19. A piece can still teach something and influence behavior without it being intended as such. The only difference here is that it's teaching something that the author believes implicitly, rather than something they think needs to be taught. For example, people are taught gender roles through media without anyone ever setting out to teach them. And, that lesson definitely has a direct impact on behavior.
  20. Regarding sexism in games vs violence in games. There's a world of difference between "Sexist portrayals of women in games reinforces a sexist worldview" and "Depictions of violence in games makes people violent." The equivalent to the violence in games debate would be "Depictions of sexism in games makes people sexist." Which is clearly silly. And, approaching it from the other direction, violence in games is bad when it's in service of reinforcing a bad worldview. The equivalent of the argument about sexism would be "Violent portrayals of arabs in games reinforces a worldview which vilifies and dehumanizes arabs,"
  21. I don't really think it's about edit vs do not edit, but more about how you properly make it available without capitalizing on it.
  22. Idle Thumbs 175: It's an Itchio

Such is the nature of a dad joke.
  23. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

    It is pretty stupid.
  24. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

It's a view that's popular among a certain type of reddit user that any sort of moderation is censorship and a violation of their rights. It's why they defended having literal honest to goodness child porn subreddits as "free speech." For some reason, the only thing that warrants deleting is "doxxing." Everything else is permitted.
  25. Summer Games Done Quick 2014

Summer Games Done Quick is a week long video game speedrun charity marathon benefitting Doctors Without Borders. It starts Sunday June 22 (today!)at 11AM PST, and ends Sunday, June 29. There will also be a bonus stream after the fact, which starts whenever and ends whenever. Links: Homepage Twitch page Schedule (this is automatically converted to your local time, which is nice) Donate (your donations are sent directly to Doctors without Borders, the organizers don't see a dime) Tracker There are raffle prizes (here), but nobody cares about those, what actually matters is the bid wars (here). When you donate, you can put your money towards various bid wars, including choosing which games get played, and naming a character in a game a specific thing. Names are generally highly bid on, and require a group effort to win. So, if, for example, we had enough interested to have a final fantasy 6 character named "wizard" or "baboo" or something, we'd all need to decide upon one collectively to funnel all of our money towards. As a speedrunner and idle thumbs reader, nothing would make me happier than to see some stupid idle thumbs in-joke make it into the marathon.
