The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS
Dewar replied to Henroid's topic in Video Gaming
Man, if I ever got Notch rich, I would waste my money buying a couple of lawyers and having them randomly grab cases like this and fight all the way to the end, no settlements, just to see what happens. -
I like watching San Jose play and I hope they do well this season. I feel like there's a lot less of the dirty play that I've gotten used to seeing when they are on the field.

Official Giant Bomb Thread Mostly for Complaining About Dan
Dewar replied to tegan's topic in Idle Banter
I imagine that there are different levels of Anxiety, as there are different levels of Autism. From what I've heard Dan talk about on various podcasts, he seems to have a fairly minor case, and I'm sure some of his solutions are useless to people experiencing more severe cases. Personally, I have had 3 panic attacks in my life, and generally deal with my anxiety, where my mom was having them weekly for a long time before she got into therapy and medication, so I got off lucky. I think this book will be about my speed, I doubt it would help my mom much.- 1367 replies

Sounders season is a couple of games in and I just haven't had time to even watch the highlights. I hope I make it to more games this year, but I have a feeling I won't.

If a person like things just the way they are despite the knowledge it's wrong, it's a whole other issue in my opinion. You can't convince those people of anything directly if they are aware of the problem and refuse to change anyway. Societal pressure is the only thing that has a chance of suppressing that behavior, and that requires awareness in society in general. Also, there's a difference from knowing that I shouldn't discriminate against a minority because there are laws against it, and understanding how much it really hurts people. I'd like to think that most people, if made aware of how much pain can be caused, instead of just being told not to do it, would stop. I guess it's all semantics in the end.

If you're not liking the price of a multi-meter, you can try one of these doohickeys. http://www.amazon.com/eForCity%C2%AE-24-pin-Power-Supply-Tester/dp/B005CTCD6S I have not tried that particular one, but Dell used to send out similar $10 units that were about 90% correct in diagnosing power supply issues. Here's a simple question I don't think anyone has asked. Are you sure that your power button is working and connected to the motherboard?

I downloaded the high maps for Seattle, started working on them, and then figured I should go to the Workshop and see what was already available. There were a couple that were decent, I grabbed them all and selected the best one and did some more edits looking at old maps from the late 1800s to get an idea of how it looked naturally. Tonight I might get to actually play

I was a big fan of the Lance and Gunlance in MHFU, since it had a stab attack that reached up and could hit certain monsters in the head very easily.

Have you actually unplugged the machine from the wall for a few minutes? Power supplies sometimes have internal breakers or something that reset when power is completely drained.

The Other Paradox Games (Europa Universalis, Victoria, Hearts of Iron)
Dewar replied to Gormongous's topic in Strategy Game Discussion
So, I've been watching a bunch of EU4 videos lately. What's the state of the game at the moment? I feel like I'm dancing on the edge of getting back into a horrible relationship. -
Sorry, I forget that we have a much more multi-national group of folks around here than I've had in other forums. I guess in your case it would be like Ireland charging you one tax, the European union charging another, and then your local municipality charging a third. Each level of government wants their own pound of flesh. In the end, none of the numbers in SimCity/Cities Skylines make sense anyway, so the percentages are somewhat meaningless as well.

The ability to fairly easily import real world terrain into this has made it very tempting. Now, if only it was easy to get historical terrain maps.

Generally, the income taxes that are due in a few weeks are federal taxes, and they generally amount to 25% or more of your income taken straight off the top before the money is ever handed to you. Additionally, you might need to pay state income taxes depending on what state you're in, that are totaled the same way and also due mid April. County/city level taxes generally are made up of sales tax or property tax, part of which is taken by the state and part of which is kept locally, as well as things like school levies, parking tickets, licenses, etc. Here in Seattle, our Sales tax is around 10%, and we have this weird thing called the B&O tax that grabs up to another 2% from industries and commercial businesses, So I guess around 12% (but of course, that money doesn't all go to the city and blah blah blah) Edit: This all assumes that you're talking about the US of course.

It's been a while since I was interested in a Lego game. I guess it will depend on how good the sound-alikes are.

Emailing myself this link so I can remember to check back when I'm at home tonight.

If everyone in the world was aware, then behavior change would come naturally I guess? For behavior-only issues, being aware that there is a problem is the biggest chunk. One would assume that the vast majority would work naturally to fix problems once they're aware there are problems. I definitely see your point for something like cancer awareness, in which you both have to be aware, and willing/able to donate. But if everyone is aware that a word is hurtful, then only those intending to be hurtful will say it, and it will become stigmatized. It's weird wording for sure.

Wake Me Up Before You IndieGoGo: A Crowdfunding Thread
Dewar replied to tegan's topic in Idle Banter
i have never used them for that service, but it might be *shrug* I can't check at work unfortunately. -
City taxes though, or federal taxes?

I didn't think to take any pictures of my Anova, but I made a couple of steaks with a basic seasoning mix that I like to use, with some extra rosemary. Didn't have a torch handy, so I seared each side in cast iron and yum! Pretty cool packaging too.

I think the idea is that if everyone is made aware enough, they'll all realize how important it is.

Wake Me Up Before You IndieGoGo: A Crowdfunding Thread

Awesome, I love Tudyk. Does it say anywhere on there how the show will eventually be released? I see that they have a Vimeo on Demand thing for the backers that lasts for 90 days, but where would you go to actually buy it? -
And what about those huge YouTube VJ parties?

I've read most of his books once, but the City Watch books are the only ones I've returned to several times to read through them all, back to back, to catch the subtle changes in character and general continuity of the whole thing.

Titanfall 2 is a Day one purchase for me. All the changes they've made show they really understand what was lacking in the first one.

Scotch and Soda, Whisky Sour, and Rum and Coke are all really simple mixed drinks that you can make at home with those preferences, with the bonus that the mixers don't go bad so if you're only drinking once or twice a month you'll be ok. You can also make a passable White Russian with milk instead of cream, sparing you having to buy an additional ingredient that spoils. If you're drinking often though, getting some cream instead does make a difference. Edit: Scotch wise, I like Highland scotches myself, my favorite being Glenmorangie. The more peaty scotches like Macallan and the others that Miffy mentioned are a completely different taste, so it's very possible that you might like some and not others. I thought I hated scotch because my friend only ever brought over Lagavulin, but there's a huge variety out there.
