  1. I was listening to the Furi Quicklook on the way to work. Brad and Dan were talking about the prices for lunch in San Francisco and Dan said something like "I could get ten sandwiches for that in New York." Combine that with the Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Quicklook on the east coast that Dan guested in, and I think him heading to the GBEast is a pretty good possibility. I suppose we'll know after tomorrow's podcast.
  2. Rimworld

So I started a new fortress in Dwarf Fortress after 2-ish years of being away. i don't mind ascii graphics, but the menu system is so hard to find your way through. Even though I remember what I need to do, figuring out what key to hit is such a pain. It's making it very tempting to just buy Rimworld instead, but the lack of Z-levels is a bit a bummer.
  3. ketchup on pizza

The less tomatoes on something the better. All hail white sauce.
  4. Recently completed video games

There's some pretty good game design touches there, which I either didn't notice or totally missed. If nothing else I'm impressed with the thought they put in, even if it fell a bit flat for me.
  5. San Francisco Thumb Recs

That tactile dome sounds fascinating, but I wonder if I'd freak out in the dark. Not usually that scared of stuff, by my mind has a way of making up new anxieties from time to time.
  6. Backlog Busters

After three years of keeping an overly-detailed backlog list in an effort to reduce the number of games I buy, I believe I succeeded in that goal and have stopped keeping a list. Even better, since I have a new Windows install, I've only been installing games from Steam that I want to play, not every single game I haven't completed, and just keeping my game view sorted to "most recent." It's been nice to let go of some of that stress that I've churned up for myself. I tend to make lists when I'm having anxiety issues then I use those lists to bludgeon myself on the head.
  7. The Next President

I feel like the results from primaries for the last 10 years or so have been like this for both sides. It sucks, certainly, but I expect Trump is going to get the same thing.
  8. The Next President

As someone who caucused for him, I definitely saw him as a loose cannon, not so much because of his consistency with his own beliefs, but more of a "I'm going to do what I think is right and damn you if you say otherwise" sort of way. Maybe that was sold to me by the Democratic media but, if that's so, it shot them in the foot because that's what I wanted out of a candidate. Edit: To follow this idea up to Gormongous's reply, I see as Hilary the type to support the status quo and support any bills put forth by the Democratic party. Thus, even if you're only concerned about the policies and not the personalities, Hilary would be the safer choice. Once again, that could be just a weird impression based on marketing. I've done some research certainly, but not as much as many due to Washington's odd place in the primary process, combined with Superdelegates screwing up my caucus vote anyway. Edit 2: In the end this is probably a meaningless distinction, since being a party of set policies, not wanting to change them, and thus electing a person who's more likely to be compliant with those predetermined policies is pretty much a party of personality anyway.
  9. The Next President

Even if it's a party of policies, you're talking about electing a loose cannon that may or may not tow the party line for any given bill. Not saying that I don't think that the Democratic Party is predominantly a party of personality, but I think Bernie was a threat to both sides of that coin.
  10. i mentioned this in the Rimworld thread, but I browsed over to the Dwarf Fortress website and saw this: 07/05/2016 Here are the first official 64-bit releases! This would not be possible without help from our community -- you can view the exciting and sometimes late-night discussion over in the 0.43.04 release thread if you want to see how the cake was baked. This release should also make worlds generated with the same seed more consistent, and it has a few other minor fixes we managed to sneak in. New stuff 64-bit support, pulling the game from the distant past into the previous decade Major bug fixes Fixed problem with artistic skill assignment causing world histories to diverge Fixed problem with worldgen trade causing world histories to diverge Other bug fixes/tweaks Stopped babies/children from competing in w.g. events Made gorlaks able to open doors, stopped desizing of their heads Fixed some mem leaks Edit: I also found out that Toady lives only about an hour from me, and there was a big ten year anniversary party at a gamer bar less than 10 miles away, but I missed hearing about it by a few weeks
  11. Rimworld

This got me browsing back to the Dwarf Fortress website, where I see they just released a 64 bit version. I might end up playing that this weekend instead, in between bouts of Minecraft and Overwatch.
  12. Idle Thumbs Streams

Man, just catching up on the Dark Souls streams.
  13. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

In 2d a lot of the areas can use repeated assets, making one screen look much like another unless it's a special area such as a boss arena. Some games are able to work around that by using a lot of different tile sets, but Salt & Sanctuary looks fairly same-y so far, exacerbating that issue. Comparing it to Dark Souls is especially a disservice, since that game lets you see other zones, either past of future, off in the distance to further help orient yourself even over other 3d action/adventure games. It is one of very few non-linear games out there that I understand how everything connects without needing a map. Dragon's Dogma, Tomb Raider, Grand Theft Auto, none of those worlds make any sense to me without at least having a basic map to refer to.
  14. Other podcasts

Just finished the second season of Friends at the Table. While it has a similar down ending to the first season, it feels like everyone involved really followed there character and things ended up pretty good for the galaxy, all-in all. I'm hugely bummed that it's over though. I still have the wrap-up and reader questions to get through some time next week. I wish I'd finished in time to submit a question or two, but maybe someone else had the same questions I did, or maybe i can get Austin to reply over Twitter.
  15. Thea: The Awakening

I finished my first game today, there was definitely a good section of the game where pretty much everything is easy, so when I completed the Cosmic Tree quest, I ended the game. Turns out there was a bunch more I was supposed to do? Maybe I hit a bug because I was in something like turn 300 and only ever seeing wandering 2-skull enemies. In my new game I'm in turn 50 and I've already seen a wandering 3-skull. Anyway, it's good enough that I immediately jumped back in to play a second game. I still wish there were better tutorials though.
  16. I Had A Random Thought...

    Idle Thumbs 795: Data Good
  17. The one thing I noticed playing as and against Ana is that it's really easy to not notice when you're getting hit by her. I've been able to counter-snipe to great effectiveness because the enemy sniper doesn't try to get out of the way or shoot back until it's too late. Healing-wise, I have found her very lack-luster. I hit the wrong target a lot in brawls, and the healing grenade feels kinda meh. It's still a nice change from being Mercy all the time though. With Zenyatta's buffs I now have 2 main healers and 2 backup healers to choose from, and that's good.
  18. Hitman: Steve Gaynor Edition

*shrug* I may have had my fill of Hitman in that case. I guess we'll see.
  19. Oh nice, didn't know this would go live today. I spent my time on the test realm playing around with Ana, so I don't really know yet, but I'll hopefully play some D.Va tonight.
  20. The Witness by Jonathan Blow

That interview completely stripped away all the internet BS that's built up around him and made me realize he's an incredibly smart guy that just has difficulties relating to people sometimes, and that's something that hits really close to home. i can't wait until he announces what's next.
  21. Hitman: Steve Gaynor Edition

That's a huge disappointment, I've been buying them singly as well, figuring that I'd just give them the extra $5 for buying them one-by-one.
  22. Recently completed video games

If you can, you should grab Link Between Worlds.
  23. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

They just mean one of the USB to Power Socket adapters right? Doesn't everyone have 20 of those already?
