The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)
Patrick R replied to Wrestlevania's topic in Idle Banter
I listen to Moanin' about every two days. I don't know jack about jazz but I know I LIKE THAT A LOT. -
Don't answer! They're trying to beat you to market!

Overwatch - That time Blizzard made a non-Diablocraft game.

Update: It plays just fine with no slowdown on my crappy laptop, but with the graphics settings and resolution set to low the deluge of particle effects and crap can make the playfield a little hard to parse. Then again, I played very little so maybe you just get used to it. But as an avid TF2 player, I like my battlefields to have way less crap on them. -

Weird, on PC the download is 6+ GB. -

Is this graphics intensive? I love TF2 and would enjoy jumping into the ground floor of a similar game, but I only have my laptop that generally can't really play new generation games. -
Did you start at the start? In my opinion it gets steadily better all the way up to season six, so you're in for a treat.

I hear that Wheatley finally learned how to use a tripod for High-Rise? That's exciting. His last couple movies only showed a vague awareness of what cameras were and how they operated.

I think it'll be a hard sell for anyone who isn't already a Spike Lee fan, but Chi-Raq is kind of an insane miracle of a movie, a passionate and angry operatic Greek sex comedy in rhyming verse about America's epidemic of gun violence but also about sexy black people being very sexy and very black. It feels like the sort of movie that isn't supposed to exist in post-Heaven's Gate Hollywood (so it's fitting it was actually the first theatrical film of Amazon Studios), completely personal and political and idiosyncratic and weird. How much you actually enjoy it depends on if you are already into Spike Lee's weirder tics (good barometer: do you like Bamboozled?) but even acknowledging it's a total overwrought mess, I urge people to watch it on principle because movies like this at this scale simply don't exist anymore. I should mention that, like most of Spike Lee's work, it has regressive attitudes towards gender, female sexuality and, by projecting such a perversely heteronormative view of the world, it ends up being kind of homophobic too.

Can you link to an example of what you have in mind?

So my sister's getting married in California in April, about a two hour drive from San Francisco where we're flying in and out. The way our flights are scheduled, we have one day in San Francisco. I'd like to think we can pull off a real sort of 24 hour period, but the truth is we're probably just going to want to walk around, eat at some places that are cool but not too expensive (since we're spending all our money getting there), and maybe go do one or two genuinely cool touristy things. Any advice from Bay Area Thumbs? Or Thumbs familiar with the Bay Area?
-
Can you recommend any good bars in it's stead? Preferably some place that won't be uncomfortably packed.

I detect a bit of reluctance to be as mad as you should because of privilege or something (could be totally wrong), but no, that guy did a horrible fucking thing. Rape culture is alive among gay populations as well as straight, and "no means no" needs to be beaten into the heads of men* of all orientations. Not at all your fault. *Possibly women too? I honestly have no clue how common sexual assault is among lesbians.

No, we're relying on public transportation and Lyft rides.

Considering we are getting into the city around 3-4PM and leaving for the airport fairly early the next day, an hour is actually a significant amount of time, especially since it's not anywhere near anything else we want to see. But maybe!

And, as far as I can tell, you can't give tags or names to your stars, so figuring out our plan of action has involved a lot of clicking back and forth between tabs, so we can figure out what address matches what location. Not only that, but at some point it only started showing about four stars on the map and I have no idea how to get them all to show back up again, other than deleting and re-entering all the addresses. Google Maps always did feel finicky and weird to me. BUT, I can say our list of potential places includes: DeYoung Museum B Star Cafe Crissy Field Rhea’s Deli and Market Humphrey Slocombe Punchline Comedy Club Dear Mom Festa Lounge Bottom of the Hill The Thirsty Bear Fisherman's Wharf?? (Really wasn't planning on it but my partner found out there are sea lions there and wants to see the sea lions) Taqueria Cancun Taqueria El Farolito Taqueria Los Coyotes La Taqueria El Metate' Taqueria San Fransisco Taqueria Vallarta Also, a walk down Castro street (is there a particular stretch worth seeing?) and a ride on a cable car.

So, we've compiled a list of various possibilities and their addresses. Is there a way, on Google Maps or elsewhere, to just enter a bunch of addresses and have them populate a map, so we can plan our day? We don't actually know where anything is in relation to each other. EDIT: The answer is "Yes, save the addresses as "Favorites". Helpful!

Got a good rate at The Mosser. Last minute bump. This happens this Sunday! We're looking for some sort of event to attend and nothing playing at the Castro really strikes our interest.

I can't participate in this, but I will link to my thread collecting all my music, all available to use for whatever, forever and ever. Also, in the interim I've created this monstrosity: I Want You Back - Jackson 5 (Eternal Purgatory remix)

Also that era of Welles will always be rough around the edges and have audio sync problems. Mr. Arkadin, even with the pristine 35mm print I saw, is the exact same way. Without studio money behind him, Welles' later work doesn't have near the amount of technical polish of Kane or Ambersons.

I have the Lone Gunmen complete series on DVD for some reason.

Not at all! It's just that your friend's complaints are shared by the larger contingent of who (not entirely unfounded, in my opinion) complain that Brad Bird's work has a streak of Ayn Randian philosophy through it, and I never did think that fit The Incredibles too much. Sorry I wasn't more specific.

And again, the film villainizing the exceptional capitalist and not the regulatory government kind of takes it far out of Ayn Rand's territory.
