I have seven shinies now, and I spent most of my evening fishing in one spot waiting for a shiny Carvanha. This is what I do now. I am Captain Ahab. I am singularly obsessed with going fishing for unusually-coloured pocket monsters. (sadly the two whale Pokémon's shiny colours are purple and not white)

Licensed games usually suck, and original ideas should always be more welcome than spinoffs, but supposing for a moment that you hypothetically had the option to make a game based on a pre-existing property and the resources to make it good, what game would you want to make? The first few Harry Potter books would make amazing Persona games. Those books are all about a bunch of kids attending class and managing their social lives during the day and uncovering the truth behind crazy mysteries at night. Megas XLR also seemed tailor-made for some kind of deal with a human-scaled city being used as a battlefield for giant robots.

Guys, guys; best idea: Pacific Rim XCOM.

I encountered my first shiny in more than a decade of playing Pokémon and ran away by mistake. There is no emoticon for my level of torment.

I guess Dead Island is basically the spiritual successor to Saints Row now, given that the new one is humour-focused and is polling interest in ridiculous pre-order items.

Idle Thumbs 166: Cyberpunk Cop-Killer

Combining this week's discussion of Jaws with last week's discussion of goddamn Sonic fanart: (yes, the entire movie) -
Why the hell do you all apparently hold me in such high regard? You know what I contribute to this forum? Horrifying Sonic the Hedgehog sex dolls and endless Pokémon threads.

So I watched the 1978 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.I have no idea how such a bland, crummy movie is held in such high regard (96% on Rotten Tomatoes!). Even Jeff Goldblum's character managed to be boring.

There's an accent and a lot of rural colloquialisms in my hometown that I managed to avoid entirely by mostly ignoring the locals and being so into reading and film growing up. -

I want a Guillermo Del Toro Metroid film.

I actually watched Jaws for the first time last night because this episode reminded me that it was on my list of movies to see. Partway through I went to a pizza place to get food and Jaws was playing on the TV they had on the wall. Crazy. I actually did the same thing Chris did back when I was fifteen or so: I rented an armload of classic movies (that I knew of but hadn't seen) from a video store every week, to build my understanding of popular culture if nothing else (I have no idea how I understood The Simpsons before seeing Citizen Kane). I've been doing the same thing again lately, but with illegal piracy and horror movies, which I was the one genre I was too apprehensive of to try at the time. Turns out I love them. Whodathunk? The one really big hole in my film vocabulary is The Godfather. I know I need to see those movies eventually, but I just never really feel like it.
