I dropped out of animation because I realized that nearly all possible career paths in the industry would have involved working on absolutely terrible garbage since animation is by necessity committee-driven, so I moved into studying comics where I could have greater creative freedom since a creator can potentially produce an entire finished work themselves. A friend of mine finally did end up breaking into animation recently because he loves it and works hard; but he's working on Brickleberry, a show that he actively despises. So I guess I have no real advice.

Wait, you guys willingly read Youtube comments?! The best decision I ever made was installing a Chrome extension that replaces the text of Youtube comments with this:

I'm paraphrasing Anita here somewhat, but... Because the way rape and violence is against women is depicted in media is never any more realistically than the dragons and zombies are. It depicts it as something that Snidely Whiplash figures do in back alleys and not as something that happens in suburban bedrooms, high school locker rooms, or in car backseats after parties; usually committed by people the victim knows and trusts; and almost always inflicts deep-seated psychological damage that rape in media never, ever explores. In addition, saying that it's "unrealistic" for a woman to be in a position of power is to erase all of the actual women who totally were. The new Assassin's Creed is set during the French Revolution, but doesn't have female characters despite the most famous assassin of the French Revolution being female? I have no problem with calling bullshit on that. Maybe you should consider asking yourself why it's so much easier for you to accept a world with dragons and zombies in it than it is to imagine one where women don't get raped or fight back. (I seriously recommend that everyone read up on Julie d'Aubigny on the grounds that she's probably the closest thing the real world ever had to Jack Sparrow)

. The Giant Bomb PAX panel thing that they posted video of is pretty great and I've been loving the ridiculous Dr. Tracksuit stuff.

This is it. I only remember it because at one point 4chan's video game board (/v/) decided to put together a video game awards show because they felt that normal video game awards shows (namely the Spike VGAs) were too corrupt. There were interstitial bits throughout, including a billion fucking Titanic clips edited to be about "TORtanic". The whole thing was so bad that /v/ agreed to never do it again. I still have it saved on a hard drive somewhere because holy shit it is baaaaaaad.

I just can't believe people are still using "TORtanic." That pun stopped being funny after like five minutes.

By the way, I watched Godzilla the other night. Almost everything about it is fantastic. It does terrified awe with the same grace that the original Jurassic Park did, it manages to cut back and forth between nightmarish Apocalypse Now scenarios and super fun monster action without ever feeling disjointed, and the music in particular does a great job of keeping the idea that this is a fifties monster movie intact despite all the modern trappings. I have only a few complaints: 1) Lieutenant Thickneck is the most boring goddamn protagonist. I mean, you need to have a human protagonist because you can't have too much Godzilla or you spoil him, but this guy is just the worst. Bryan Cranston's character has very clear motivation and pathos and goals, which makes it a whole lot worse when his son takes over and he has nothing to do and no reason to do it. 2) I don't normally bring up the Bechdel Test on here, but this movie comes so tantalizingly close to passing it. Nurse Wife and Work Friend have a conversation about evacuating the city, but it turns out they're only interested in making sure that Nurse Wife's son makes it out okay. Of the four main female roles (Dead Mom, Science Assistant, Nurse Wife, and Work Friend), only one of them has any dialogue not directly relating to either Lieutenant Thickneck or the kid.

My favourite is calling an A-shirt/tanktop/undershirt a "wifebeater." Can you imagine describing any of your other clothing that way? "We'll head to the drive-through in a minute, just lemme slip on a wifebeater and a pair of child molesters."

I guess I'm about a decade late with this, but... why do people dislike the Xbox 360 controller D-pad?
tegan replied to cowuponacow's topic in Video Gaming
I wish that now that Nintendo's patent on their d-pad has expired, Sony would just swallow their pride and abandon the stupid four-buttons-but-not-really thing. Look at how nice the one on the Xbone looks! Disclaimer: I have not used the Xbone d-pad -
To be honest, this would actually be kind of a really good way to go about it? Protip: I started using "you look great" as a way to compliment a person's appearance a while back, because it's a direct compliment that carries absolutely no connotations or subtext the way something like "lookin' good" or "have you lost weight?" do.

It's the surprisingly great Vita d-pad. Sony sadly switched back to something nearly identical to their old d-pad for the PS4. -
I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you're not trying to be patronizing, but the context of a video game is incredibly myopic compared to the context of the entire human experience. Being able to come up with bullshit story justification for why the checkpoints in your Assassin's Creed tutorial have to be prostitutes getting their throats slit is absolutely no excuse for perpetuating the notion that women are expendable pawns in the lives of men that's been going on since humanity first started telling stories.

Could you try it with a shooter or something that natively supports analog stick input to see how it responds? I'm interested in trying it myself if it feels okay.
-
Saying that Anita doesn't consider context is something that really bugs me. Untold centuries of violence against women; That's your fucking context.

I'm playing Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Justice For All, Puzzles For Some: I can't believe this took two fucking years to localize. This is pretty good so far! I'm only about an hour in so not much has happened yet, but I'm really appreciating the presentation of it all. I get the worrying feeling that this is gonna go in very stupid directions since there seems to be straight-up magic involved though. Also, I don't like Luke's new VA.

Anyone interested in the way women tend to be presented in action movies, comics, games, etc will probably enjoy the spot-on parody found in Kate Beaton's Strong Female Characters comics.
