I'm disappointed that Giant Bomb didn't have any articles despite Jeff and Patrick talking about it a little elsewhere. On the other hand, that job would almost certainly go to Patrick, since he's almost always the one to write about this kind of shit and almost always gets stuck taking all the shit for it. Even knowing that others (like Zoe) have had it far worse, seeing him get booed at their PAX panel was heartbreaking.

Zoe's stream of "here is an accusation people laid against her" followed by a screencap of 4chan assholes talking about how they intentionally made shit up/misdirected people just keeps going and going. After the stupid Bane shit, I'm so glad someone made this much better comparison. So! How much do you want to bet that neither TFYC, TotalBiscuit, or anyone else involved apologize for allowing themselves to be duped into making Zoe's life miserable for this whole time?

My point was supposed to be about how it's kind of gross to try to retroactively bring up justifications for a decision that in nearly all cases has nothing to do with choosing the best option for the narrative and is instead just a Thing That You Do Because It's Always Like That. I'm not accusing Campo Santo of doing that (CS is one of the only studios that I can imagine actually having internal discussion about Henry being a straight white man), but it reeks of the worst sort of excuses that gamers and developers come up with. "Female assassins were too hard to model." "We didn't want to make a new physics model for Peach's skirt."

Random thought about how video games are fucking weird: Does anyone else ever stop and think about how messed up it is that video games have equal experience and validity as both a means of expressing a narrative and as a competitive sport? I feel like a lot of bullshit "it's not a real game" sentiment stems from the fact that Pong (which is a representation of a sport that's meant to be even more abstract than, say, chess), Gone Home (which is an almost purely narrative experience with little in the way of rules or systems), and Pokémon (which is equally valid when played as a narrative experience with competitive elements and as a competitive sport where the positions have unusually specific designs and backstories) all grew out of the same thing.

I'm not upset about Henry being a white guy, but this sentiment is totally a microcosm of the discussion toward the end of the episode 173 thread about how it was more "historically accurate" for certain games not to have women in them, etc. Don't be that guy.
