I appreciate this rant. This kind of ties into a discussion I was having with another forumite about the Bechdel Test a while back. The Bechdel test frequently gets misinterpreted as a flat criteria for reviewing individual movies, when its value lies in its use as a cultural barometer for the state of film as a whole. The joke in the comic strip that it originate from isn't that a certain movie is terrible, it's that one of the characters hasn't found a movie that passes the test in six years. More specifically, the Bechdel test is eye-opening because it presents a standard that most movies either fail to meet or just barely eke by, while the reverse of that standard (two men having a conversation about something other than a woman) is a standard that maybe one film out of every decade will fail to pass. The particular part of the test that stands out, to me, isn't the film industry's bizarre that there can only be one woman in a movie at a time, it's that on the rare occasion when they interact with each other, they almost inevitably turn their conversation to focus on a man. Or to put it another way:

I've definitely heard #1, I just can't place it, and it's killing me.

Halloween time! I rewatched The Monster Squad and Sweet Home. Both hold up surprisingly well, outside of Monster Squad being surprisingly filthy (and holy shit; kids smoking in movies. What the hell, eighties?) and Sweet Home's baffling casting decision of trying to pass off a 26 year old woman as a kid.

It's for last year, apparently, but yeah. I'm worried about not being on the list.

Haha, oh man, Corruption of Champions. I remember this shit. I specifically remember that there's only one gay male (most characters are bi/pan and either female or hermaphroditic) character in the game and you have the option to turn encounters with him off, because the creator was too icked out. The only other gameplay element I remember the player being able to permanently disable was the one that made parasitic worms infest their dick; so you're in good company, gay men!
