  1. anime

Lucky Star is the Big Bang Theory of anime.
  2. Nintendo 3DS

Seriously you guys, the new Shantae is secretly the 3DS Metroid I've always wanted. Its general structure and the way it control both evoke a hypothetical superior iteration on Metroid Fusion. I seriously can't recommend it enough.
  3. I Had A Random Thought...

You would be amazed. This is Dennis Falk, the guy who was directly responsible for getting Tiny Toons cancelled because of his increasingly creepy and sexual messages to the show's cast and crew. This picture is twenty years old.
  4. anime

Azumanga Daioh is the Seinfeld of anime.
  5. I Had A Random Thought...

So I've been watching the Giant Bomb Extra Life livestream. It's been generally pretty great, but maaaan did I cringe hard when Jason Oestreicher's wife started talking about how much she loved Bridget from Guilty Gear because of "how so many people thought it was a girl" while sitting mere feet from acclaimed transgender game developer Samantha Kaplan. She started talking about Poison from Final Fight before Samantha basically had to say how uncomfortable it was making her. Eesh.
  6. anime

I always secretly hoped that Sakaki and Kaorin got together after graduation. Just sayin'.
  7. Unnecessary Comical Picture Thread

What a century of reflection and cultural distancing does to a tragic historical event:
  8. Nintendo 3DS

Three times now I've had to put this game down to recharge my battery. It's really, really good. To address some specific concerns in this thread: I'm not even very far in the game and I've encountered a ton of secrets, shortcuts, and interesting level ticks; as well as picked up a handful of new verbs (I have a floaty pirate hat!). Seriously, they made an unquestionably good Shantae game. The prophecy has finally come to pass.
  9. Sixteen, but now that I've slept on it, you're probably right and I'm just full of shit.
  10. Now that we know that the Wii U can do 8-player matches, it would probably have the exact same problem with Ice Climbers that the 3DS one has: rendering 16 complex player-controlled characters probably just isn't doable on that hardware. Also, Mewtwo won't be available until Spring of 2015. I hope they do the completely goddamn ridiculous Mario Kart 8 thing where they still put him on the character select screen just to remind you that he's coming. In all seriousness, I hope Mewtwo's available for people who don't want to buy two copies of the same game. Even if I have to buy his Amiibo to unlock him or something.
  11. Nintendo 3DS

It's a huge step up. Jeremy Parish says it better than I could. He also briefly touches on why Shantae became a cult classic despite not holding up, which is really interesting to read. It's a good review.
  12. Nintendo 3DS

Honestly, this is the one to get. Shantae's always been Wayforward's passion project; and Pirate's Curse is the distilled, refined version of that.
  13. Nintendo 3DS

I caved and bought Shantae. I'm so glad I bought it on 3DS, because otherwise I wouldn't have ever known that they used the 3D effect to give all the female characters' talking sprites pop-out boobs. That is the most Wayforward-ass thing to do.
  14. After Chris' talk about his childhood fear of being carried away by balloons, I expected the Pixar talk to immediately veer into the idea of a five-year-old Chris watching Up and being terrified. (True story: Muntz was originally supposed to die by snagging his foot on a bunch of balloons and floating away instead of falling)
  15. What is the Nadir of the Simpsons?

All of the settings invented in the early seasons tend to be the crappiest possible versions of whatever sort of location they're supposed to be: the Power Plant is ludicrously evil and unsafe, the Kwik E Mart treats its employees like garbage and gouges prices as hard as possible, Moe's is an unsanitary dive, etc.
  16. anime

I dunno where this came from but okay, thanks. I also recently watched Princess Jellyfish and Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-Kun and really enjoyed both. I don't really have much to add since I guess everyone else is watching them. Is Kashima from Nozaki-Kun supposed to be into girls or what? I also started re-watching Another, which I think I give more of a pass than it deserves because it's so rare that anyone makes horror-themed animation.
  17. The Cars movies have actually traditionally done pretty poorly compared to other Pixar films financially. It's the merchandising that made them so well-known. Monsters University, comparatively, did incredibly well. From Wikipedia's top grossing animated films list; green boxes are films still playing in theaters as of October 17th, yellow boxes are emphasis on my part.
  18. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I expect that they might talk about it more, but I honestly appreciate the way Idle Thumbs handled their discussion. It was long, in-depth, and timely. They explicitly condemned it and explained why, and as a bonus even brought Anita on later to just talk about games and, in a way, put their money where their mouth is.
  19. What is the Nadir of the Simpsons?

At this point I'm just using it as a "complain about The Simpsons" thread. If you're looking for more in-depth criticisms of TOH XV... -it's overly explainy. Every joke and every character's motivation is explained to the audience by the characters at all times. The first segment has things like Lisa explaining a visual gag that amounts to her letting us know that snow is cold. Character frequently announce how they're feeling (that makes me feel angry!), sometimes to nobody in particular. -Homer goes on complaining about annoying emails from private schools and tricky golf courses at one point, which are maybe the most first-world problems possible and makes me wonder if this is supposed to be the same family that had to scrimp and save for an operation for their dog. -the first two segments just kind of peter out with no satisfying conclusion. The second is especially bad since it just devolves into "these are scenes from films that Stanley Kubrick also directed." -there's all kinds of weird scripting problems. The second segment has a caption explain that years have past, but the characters explicitly refer to the time as having been "months." The third segment has a love triangle between modern Homer, vintage Marge, and modern Marge; with vintage Homer seemingly standing just offscreen never having anything to say or do even though he should be furious. He only intervenes when Marge specifically mentions it. Not as bad as the TOH I mentioned in the first post, but still full of problems.
  20. Other podcasts

    Dan Ryckert is Forrest Gump.
  21. What is the Nadir of the Simpsons?

Hey, I didn't talk about The Wreck of the Relationship!
  22. Idle Food - Cooking!

    Nope! Just electric.
