  1. I don't have much to contribute, except for: 1) I'm not entirely sure on this, but I personally wouldn't count Jessica Rabbit, because she basically spells out loud in her most famous quote that she was drawn sexy just for the sake of being sexy. There's no actual justification there. 2) Kainé from Nier is a perfect example. She's been made to feel uncertain of her femininity and retaliates by wearing nothing but bandages, high heels, and a lingerie set: 3) Kate Beaton's "Strong Female Characters" comic provided a pitch-perfect parody example: 4) the name "Baby Got Backstory" is an absolutely amazing term and deserves mainstream recognition.
  2. HOWL O'WEEN (Halloween)

Four more days until HALLOLEEM! So I picked up The Mummy and The Wolf Man today. Holy crap, I never realized before how uncomfortably creepy and rape culturiffic Lon Chaney Jr's character in The Wolf Man is. At the start of the movie, he's testing this telescope and uses it to peer into the dressing room of Evelyn Ankers' character. Next he goes to her workplace and starts describing a pair of earrings she owns, telling her that he saw them in her dressing room but refusing to tell her how or when. He tells her that he'll back that evening to pick her up for a date and she refuses him in no uncertain terms (a flat "no") three times. Then he fucking shows up anyway and visibly startles her. She even tells him that she's engaged later, and he still forces a kiss on her after giving her a gift that she doesn't want or ask for. He's supposed to be this charming, likable guy but he's just this creepy stalker for the entire movie that this poor lady is expected to take in good humour. One thing that I do appreciate on re-watching, though, is that there's never any real evidence that there's a werewolf until the very end when another character sees him turn human (and that could be a delusion on said character's part). For all we know, Talbot is just a murderer who created some kind of psychotic justifcation for his actions or something. Some of the evidence for him actually being a werewolf doesn't even make sense, like the wolf prints leading up to his bed when he wakes up after the first time. His father only says that the prints lead to their property, not inside. It seems like an odd thing to overlook, and would indicate that Talbot cleaned up the prints, even though he's trying to convince his father that he's telling the truth about being a werewolf.
  3. Funny thing: I was just having problems this morning with it restarting any time I opened an mp3 from the Phantom of the Paradise soundtrack. I moved the folder and now it works fine. So weird.
  4. Goddamnit, for some reason Windows Explorer keeps crashing and restarting on me. It seems to be a fairly common problem with no agreed-upon solution. I've mostly got it under control now thanks to one fix that I found, but I can't figure out what's triggering it.
  5. Lego is Still Cool

Oh man, that lady knight is rad.
  6. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

    Some seagulls.
  7. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Man, that Sarkeesian Effect video is great. I hadn't realized that their goal was 15k a month for an estimated 5 months. I fucking guarantee that most of the assholes who donated subscribe to the theory that Anita "took the money and ran" after her Kickstarter, but never questioned why these two need nearly thirteen times as much as Anita had originally asked for for a much smaller project.
  8. Nintendo 3DS

I started a "Pirate Mode" run on Shantae. You start with all your abilities unlocked, but no health or power upgrades. It's actually been really cool to be able to just tear through every area at full tilt and grab everything in one go. I think this is on my GOTY shortlist for this year.
  9. you can assign multiple categories, so they it could be all three if you wanted. I have Favourites at the top followed by "Beaten," "Now Playing," "Unplayed," "Simulators," "Other," and one just for the Wallace and Gromit episodes I bought on GOG.

  11. Lego is Still Cool

    Everyone likes ice cream. Everyone.
  12. Lego is Still Cool

You're never too goth for ice cream. (the new minifigures are great, by the way)
  13. What are the best GTA clones?

Clearly what you need to play are African hacked bootlegs of actual GTA games.
  14. Life

My birthday is in two weeks and I feel like butt. And old. Also, I'm childish enough that I want to buy myself something nice but responsible enough to know that I'll feel terrible for spending the money. Argh.
  15. Nintendo 3DS

I'd wait it out a bit. It's not that they're bad, just that Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire seem like they'll be much stronger entries and there's almost certain to be an improved Z version down the line.
  16. Nintendo 3DS

I unlocked "Pirate Mode," apparently! Neat!
  17. Nintendo 3DS

I'm nearly finished Shantae. I got 100% of the collectibles and even found the secret bonus mini dungeon based on the Gameboy Color Shantae. Right now I'm at the end of the final dungeon, which is basically Flappy Bird, of all things.
  18. Photos of things

It also made him look like John Goodman.
  19. Posting this here and in the manga thread: Digital Manga Publishing is currently organizing a Kickstarter to publish 31 of Osamu Tezuka's best untranslated work (Three-Eyed One, Rainbow Parakeet, Alabaster, Wonder 3, Birdman Anthology, and Vampires), all by next year. Their previous English translations of Tezuka's work -Barbara, Triton of the Sea, Atomcat, and Unico- have been consistently excellent and an extremely valuable effort in bringing some of Tezuka's often overlooked work to English audiences for the first time. They're asking for $380,000 for the first two series, with stretch goals of $475,000 and $589,000 for each additional two series. It seems like a lot, but I cannot stress enough how worthwhile this project is.

  21. Nintendo 3DS

I'll need to buy a big microSD card for when the New 3DS comes out, so I feel ya.
  22. What are the best GTA clones?

YES! I came in to mention this one. I still play it every once in a while. I don't know how well it would be received by someone who didn't play it when it came out since I'm sure it's missing some features of modern GTA clones that might be taken for granted now. Also, does Saints Row the Third count? Because I love me some Saints Row the Third (and to a lesser extent, Saints Row IV).
  23. These birds sound like tiny Waluigis.
  24. anime

actually I meant that they're both
  25. Life

I have the secret fantasy of going to a high-school reunion and lording over everyone by being more successful and interesting than they are. the secret fear of going to a high school reunion and feeling terrible because everyone turned out more successful and interesting than I did, and the secret acknowledgement that I will never bother going to a high school reunion because I don't actually remember anything about any of those people outside of the ones who were assholes.
