The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS

I notice they're being a lot more realistic about the huge transparent plastic bits in the new Amiibo pictures. Still waiting on Mr. Game & Watch.

I hadn't even realized before that that ad continues the weird Samus/Pikachu relationship that Brawl started.

My fourth HDMI port inexplicably started working tonight after four years of bupkis. I only found out because I was setting up my new box for CEC control and had to change inputs to go into my TV's menu. I always keep my completely unused Fibreop TV receiver hooked up to the buster port so I can just switch the cables out if I ever need it. If it weren't for the extremely annoying fact that it always displays a screensaver when not in use, I never even would have noticed. My TV was a display model when I got it and that port has never worked, so this is an unexpected surprise. This means I won't have to choose what to disconnect when I eventually get a PS4! Yaaaay!

Obligatory Comical YouTube Thread II: The Fall of YouTube
tegan replied to pabosher's topic in Idle Banter
Not a video link, but more of an observation: You know Ashens? I really miss the days when he just joked about shitty video games instead of trying to slowly kill himself by eating horrific expired food. The Cronenbergian whole canned chicken he ate yesterday was nauseating. All of his food videos very samey too. He reveals something horrible, says "I'm going to have to eat this, aren't I?" and then just describes his revulsion toward this obviously terrible food. Every time. -
Don't be so hasty to conflate Ghibli with Miyazaki. He's the face of Ghibli for sure, but Isao Takahata's nearly as prolific and is, frankly, a better filmmaker.

UPDATE: I got the 2014 WDTV and can confirm that it still can't do concurrent subtitles. Booo. It also still can't play some of my MKV files, including the ones I bought it for. Boooo. Still neat though.

I got myself a new WDTV and a Mickey Mouse comic set. OuO I've had a first-generation WDTV forever so it's weird to get used to the new one, but I really like it.

Ducktales, like a lot of the Disney Afternoon stuff, kind of drops in quality after the first few episodes made to draw in viewers. I feel there's still a few strong episodes in there, though. I always liked "Hotel Strangeduck," "The Curse of Castle McDuck," "Ducky Horror Picture Show," and "Allowance Day." I hated Bubba the Caveduck though. It looks like he wasn't in as many episodes as I thought; but any time he was around, my interest just dropped. Man, I already wanna rewatch Over the Garden Wall. I love that every single thing in that intro sequence eventually pays off. I also love how goddamn creepy the beast is. I took a screenshot of the one view you get of it on my second watch.

I like the Persona 3/4 solution, where each activity you can perform will eat up a clearly designated part of your day. eg: you have an "evening" block that you can spend studying, hanging out, doing a part-time job, dungeon crawling, etc.
-
So the entirety of Over the Garden Wall got leaked and I watched the whole thing in one go tonight. Oh man, is it ever great. I hope y'all have been watching it. I think my favourite bits are either when it pays tribute to old Fleischer cartoons (like the creepy too-smoothly-animated Highwayman's song and Greg's dream) or when it gets legitimately scary ("The Ringing of the Bell").

They're little pull-cord one-wheeled racer things.

I think they know enough not to put a new AC on a console, at least not without doing some kind of cross-save thing. I seem to remember the Wii one not doing so hot , while New Leaf was an early killer app for the 3DS that just keeps churning out money for them.

The New 3DS can use Amiibos and they're releasing an amiibo reader thing for the old models, so that doesn't really imply anything. If I can force Prince to move back in by buying his amiibo, I will fucking DO it.

There's an anime from a decade or so back called Princess Tutu that draws a ton of inspiration from stage performance, including having stagehands dressed in black assist with some of the action sequences. They're never really acknowledged or spoken to by any of the characters, so it's not clear if they're really there or not. It's a weird decision for an animated series to make, but it does a really good job of contributing to the series' ongoing theme of reality being corrupted by fantasy.

Nobody gets confused by the Alien vs Predator movies even though both of those monsters are alien predators. Best weird nondescriptive monster naming: people are way more likely to understand what you're talking about if you say "Jason" than "Jason Voorhees."

I fucking KNEW they'd do a card game with amiibo. I've been saying that they'd use it to make NFC-enabled Pokémon cards since forever.

It's the only one of the Mario & Luigi games that I've just completely lost interest in and had no interest in going back to.

One thing that's really weird to me: I recently changed internet service plans, which involved me getting TV service for the first time in seven years. I watched a few hours of TV just out of curiosity, and it blew my mind that everything is ruined in the exact opposite manner to how it was previously ruined. When I stopped watching TV, HD and even widescreen TVs were still pretty rare. Everything was in 4:3, horribly and all the movies were cropped or pan-and-scan copies with degraded colour and clarity. Now it's 2014 and I can see loads of old widescreen material in their original formats, but anything that was originally filmed in 4:3 gets squashed, zoomed in, and cropped; with digital compression artifacts on everything. It's so gross.
