  1. I Had A Random Thought...

Are you spelling cheque instead of check yet? Because spelling the word that way is probably the best thing about being Canadian.

As a side note, I totally get why people can see sexist themes in Ico, and I think that interpretation is totally valid, but I've always seen the differences between Ico and Yorda as being about their ages rather than their genders. I always saw Ico as being kind of brash and stupid, like a kid his age would be, and more likely to do something dangerous than Yorda; whereas I always felt Yorda acts like a young adult who doesn't normally interact with children being forced into a situation with one, where she doesn't really know what to make of anything he does.
  3. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna' keep listening to this even though I have no idea what anyone is talking about. I love the sheer enthusiasm.

27 volumes! Viz is republishing it in three-volume omnibuses now, so the singles of those last volumes that I need are probably going out of print now anyway. (I really like those omnibus volumes they're doing for everything though) Give them to meeee. Assembling cheap furniture is like some kind of zen thing for me. I am so excited for the point when I'm financially stable enough to star furnishing my bedroom.

New Brunswick! I used to live in Miramichi, but I moved to Moncton when I got a job offer here last summer. It's still a very small city, but it's a huge step up from Miramichi. This is the biggest apartment I've ever lived in, but until December I was living in a shoebox-sized single room in the basement of this same building. I feel terrible because Fullmetal is really good and I don't want to sell the volumes I have until I finish the series. I have what, five volumes left? I should really just give in and read it online.
  6. Does anyone have any good examples of games with dynamically changing music? It's something I'm always interested in. Here's a few recent examples that come to mind: Nier has a pair of twins in your hometown that sing and play instruments that match up with the background music. It fades in as you approach them and fades out as you leave. It's actually something that's kind of struck me in retrospect as being incredibly brilliant. Super Mario Galaxy had that kind of annoying bit with the goofy ball you have to balance on where the music would speed/pitch up and slow/pitch down according to how fast you were moving. I'm not sure if that counts or not, but it's neat. Related: the Endless Staircase theme from Super Mario 64 that creates an auditory illusion that the pitch is always rising. Pokémon of all things has some really good dynamic music now. In the fifth generation games; on top of having multiple Woodtick-esque bits where instruments, singers, clapping etc. can be dropped in and out of the background track (with my favourite instance being a rock band that you can battle where each member stops playing as you beat them), I only just now noticed an incredibly subtle effect: the travelling music for most of the routes in the game will only have its percussion when your character is moving. I played through more than 200 hours of these games without ever noticing that. Best. I think about this subject sometimes, and every time Monkey Island 2 comes up on the 'cast Chris always mentions the music from Woodtick, so I figured we might get a good discussion out of the idea!
  7. The best part of that was finally finding out where the intro for that one Birthday Massacre song come from. I like to imagine that one dude imported a Japanese Zapper to play Duck Hunt. Also, what's that movie where dickless from Ghostbusters hits on the cute girl?

I just finished watching it. I felt like there was a lot more "look at how goddamned stupid video games are" in this one, but it needed to be said; and the conclusion toward the end really got its point across much more effectively than the first video. Also, since she preemptively disabled the comments this time, people have been trolling her by reporting the video for TOS violations instead. I'm not a huge fan of them myself, but why the fuck are internet people so offended and full of vitriol at the notion of wanting to discuss issues like fucking adults?

    Oh hey, look who's back.
  10. Life

I was able to buy a full cart of groceries for the first time in forever today. I maybe went overboard and splurged a little, but oh man real food so good omph nomph nomph omph nomph

I did my big annual spring purge recently, plus this weekend I grabbed a few Pokémon games on clearance with some store credit I had, so I thought I'd take some photos of the game/movie shelf while I'm cleaning the apartment. It's not like you could even see what was on the shelf in the original pictures anyway. Various odds and ends: Blu-Rays (I sold about half of my BRs to make rent a while back): Handheld Games: Console Games: DVDs (I sold about half of my DVDs recently too): Dumb Comics For Dumbweiners:
  12. Because Pikmin 3 is gradually creeping up on us. I'm UnitNumberFive. Miiverse profile here. Right now I'm going through Super Metroid in whatever order I feel like. PROTIP: there are two ways to Friend people. The first way is to go to "Register Friend" on the Friends List itself and type in their name, but they won't be notified that you're trying to add them. The second is to send them a friend request through Miiverse, which you can do by going to "User Menu" > "Search Users" > type their exact name > "Friend Request."

  14. «Game Shop»

It's funny because this was printed fifteen fucking years ago.
  15. So just now I was polishing my computer case and found myself feeling a little ashamed. Thanks, Jake.
  16. «Game Shop»

I am seriously sick to death of the whole "fake geek girl" thing.
  17. Curiosity – What's Inside the Cube?

They're not just sticking him in the game, though. From what I understand, it's an asymmetrical multiplayer game where he gets to be in a better role that everyone else playing the game. It's like the hypothetical Star Trek MMO where a few thousand people work as engineers and maintenance crew and stuff and one dude plays as the captain.
  18. Life

I dunno' what's wrong with me, but my head aches and I'm throwing up and stuff. Maybe from the new medication or maybe just from all the exertion lately. I get scared when I'm sick, though. It's one of the few times when I miss my mom.
  19. Curiosity – What's Inside the Cube?

What if Bryan gets bored of playing after a few weeks, just like almost everyone with almost every game?
  20. Oh yeah! PROTIP: there are two ways to Friend people. The first way is to go to "Register Friend" on the Friends List itself and type in their name, but they won't be notified that you're trying to add them. The second is to send them a friend request through Miiverse, which you can do by going to "User Menu" > "Search Users" > type their exact name > "Friend Request." I guess the first option is there as a means of parental controls, but it's still there if you're over the age limit, so it's super counterintuitive. I should probably put this in the first post!
  21. I haven't picked any XCOM names, but my ship in FTL is always helmed by Captain James Rustler. It's the subtlest joke.
  22. Nextbox 1080: The Reckoning

As a rule, I never pirate new games and generally only get ROMs of games that I either already own or will never be able to own. I do have the Homebrew Channel on my Wii, but I've only ever used it for Earthbound, Sweet Home, a failed attempt to emulate Beetle Adventure Racing, and one wild night of Advance Wars 2 multiplayer on a fourty inch television. Incidentally, if anyone knows a hack to make the Wii main menu compatible with a Gamecube controller, that would be a huge timesaver for me.
  23. Nextbox 1080: The Reckoning

I was completely like this, but found it to be a surprisingly easy habit to break. A while back I decided to sell all of my books, movies, and games that didn't meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) have I used this in the last year? 2) is this item rare or virtually impossible to replace? (ie: games not on virtual console, nifty limited editions) 3) does this item have particular sentimental value? (ie: Super Mario 64, the first game I remember owning) I've since made it an annual tradition, and as of now I generally keep it down to less than ten games per system. It wasn't until I was forced to buy a game digitally (because there were no physical copies left in stock) that I realized how much simpler it made things for me. This actually looks rad. How do you do this?
  24. Movie/TV recommendations

Done and done. Unfortunately they were out of stock by the time I actually decided, so it'll take a while to get here, but I still got the sale price. I didn't even use up the full credit! (For anyone interested, it's twenty bucks. Normally the set costs eighty)
  25. Movie/TV recommendations

I have a question: I have some amazon credit I want to use, and the Alien Anthology on Blu-Ray is on sale for super cheap. Does anyone know which cuts of the movies are included? I think it's both versions of each movie, but I'm not entirely sure. I hear that the original version of the second movie and the Director's cut of the third are both really good, and as chance would have it those are the two that I can't find anywhere.
