I had already seen the 1986 version, but I finally got around to seeing the 1958 version of The Fly. If the remake is about watching a loved one die of a terminal disease, then the original is about assisted suicide. Just a few observations (gonna' spoil a fifty year old movie, just FYI): The makeup effects on the fly head still look really good. Specifically it's the way that its mouth moves that gets me. It really bugs me when a story told through flashback includes details that the one telling it couldn't possibly have known. dude straight up murders his own cat and does not give a fuck. Even though we've been told about his compassion for all living creatures. the infamous ending scene is really goddamned weird. By all means modern audiences should find it comical, but the fly screaming for help is legitimately horrifying.

Still doin' colossi! THIS IS PHAEDRA.
  3. So here's something that may be of interest for some people. Here are some original designs for when this game was first being produced in 1998 for the Dreamcast. In other news, this game was first being produced in 1998. For the Dreamcast.
  4. Animal Crossing: New Leaf

Added! Shall I open my gate?

One universal code. It's in the Friend menu indicated by the orange smiley face on the home menu. You can even add people while your game is paused. Animal Crossing has its own "best friend" system that lets you message people without having to be in the same town as well; and if you meet a stranger while visiting someone's town, you can add them to your friends list without ever leaving the game. You do have to input codes to enter server-backups of peoples' towns (as opposed to visiting them live), though.
  6. Nintendo 3DS

I really want to, but I'm broke at the moment. Niyeaux: put your friend code in the 3DS networking thread!
  7. I Had A Random Thought...

If you made an omelet and forgot to include eggs, you would make a stir fry.
  8. Animal Crossing: New Leaf

I need that Spino Tail! Do we have each other registered?
  9. Cartoons!

I would be a lot more forgiving of the movie if I weren't such a huge fan of Astro Boy. It's got a lot of little things that I love (the butt machine guns return for the first time in ages, there are cameos from both Tezuka himself and Hyoutan-Tsugi, etc); but there's so much stuff that felt really tacked on from a generic CG kids' movie (whatsherface with the dyed hair, colour-coded energy balls, those goddamned annoying British robots) and it doesn't match the tone of the Astro Boy manga at all. I'd really love to see another shot at it though, because there's so much you can get out of the character.
  10. Osamu Tezuka

I ordered it through a bookstore with no problems a few years back, but I think it's out of print by now. It looks like amazon has the whole series available, but prices vary wildly from volume to volume.
  11. Cartoons!

I like how 90% of the stuff mentioned on this page has Mako in it. ...He was pretty good in the 2007 Ninja Turtles film. It's too bad that animation studio went on to do a really disappointing Astro Boy movie with Nicholas Cage and then just shut down.
  12. Recently completed video games

After putting it off for seven years, I finally got and beat Chibi-Robo! I think I might even 100% it, since I'm already so far in all of the sidequests and I'm still really enjoying the gameplay and super quirky and adorable nature of everything else. One thing that makes this game hilarious in 2013: Remember at DICE this year when David Cage mentioned that another developer had told him that his game wasn't a real game if it wasn't about shooting dudes, driving cars, or jumping on platforms? Chibi-Robo has the exact minimum of all of those things. The exceptionally brief combat is just sort of tacked on to make the game slightly more conventionally exciting, there's a tiny minigame where you play chicken using toy cars, and there's some mild platforming (all done with a character who cannot jump). It's hilarious.

Did you include the elaborate parody Duck Dodgers devoted a whole segment to? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wl7B034tVKg side note: Duck Dodgers is still pretty awesome.
  14. My favourite crowdfunding endeavors are the ones that use Kickstarter as an elaborate preorder system for something that was going to be produced anyway.
  15. Comics Extravaganza - Pow Bang Smash!

This was before that. Sometime in like 2008 or so Tokyopop had made huge cuts to their line of original graphic novels (as opposed to their translations) and decided not to release any more of King City, but Tokyopop had an infamously terrible contract system that meant that the creators had no rights to their own work, forfeited their legal rights and were only allowed to solve disputes with Tokyopop by showing up in LA and visiting a private company called JAM, etc. (actual quote from a Tokyopop contract). I remember King City being a big casualty when they closed the branch because the dude wasn't allowed to revive it in any form.

So I'm rewatching Terminator 2 and man, Sarah Connor's narration is terrible. I think that this is what Metroid: Other M was drawing inspiration from.
  17. Comics Extravaganza - Pow Bang Smash!

King City kept going? I remember finding it when it was new years ago, but the creator was being screwed over by Tokyopop and basically wasn't allowed to keep making his own comic.
  18. I want to see a version of this reskinned to be about weird birds feeding their chicks.
  19. Cartoons!

    I am the most excited.
  20. Animal Crossing: New Leaf

I can do that! I'll go open my gate. EDIT: open!
  21. Let's Draw Video Games

did some Metroid concepts today. Although there's still problems with it, I inked the one I liked best.
  22. I always liked in Wind Waker and Super Paper Mario how there was the one token story scene based on the fact that the player will invariably break somebody's priceless vase because that's all they've been doing up until this point.
  23. anime

I only ever read the first volume of Monster, but I'm really tempted to go back to it now that I know that Urasawa put Tezuka characters into it, seemingly for no reason.
