Shantae games traditionally look terrible in videos and sound amazing in description. The truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Side note: if the one single photograph somebody took of the Pirate's Curse demo is anything to go by, this is the second time in very recent history that they've completely revamped Shantae's art style.
-
Why are they doing this now? Shantae just got rereleased for the first time in more than a decade plus Shantae and the Pirate's Curse comes out before the end of the year. It's really weird timing.

Wizardcon '98? (it has to be called '98, every year)

Apparently they intend to support Pokémon Bank for years to come, so that's why they're going with a paid model. Future releases being able to access it seems likely.
-
So there were two announcements: One is Pokémon Bank, a paid (annual fee) cloud-based storage system meant to supplement the in-game PC that can hold up to 3000 Pokémon and can be used to transfer monsters up from the Gen V games; and Mega Evolutions for the Kanto starters. Looks like you get a Kanto starter fairy early in the game, which is cool. I don't really like Mega Venusaur, Charizard, or Blastoise though. Those three have such classic simple designs and it's weird to see them with a bunch of stuff tacked on. You know that scene in The Iron Giant where they disguise the giant by adding a bunch of crap and making him look like one of Dean's junk sculptures, and then Annie saying that he doesn't look as thought-out as the other pieces? It's like that.

Just in case anyone else is up this early, there's a Pokémon Direct in 45 minutes. I predict that there's going to be a reveal of whatever the heck "Pokken Fighters" is as well as X/Y news. Wii U fighting game maybe?

I guess this is an actual thing where like 700 artists are redrawing the entirety of the Akira manga with Simpsons characters. This is the best possible joke by far.
-
Rodi: FLOEP I kind of want to do the Steam picture thing. I only have like 13 Steam games anyway, not counting a handful of shortcuts to other games I tossed in. Oh, and I finished the Feraligatr picture. Maybe I should draw the other starters in the same style... ...all 18 of them. Yeesh.

Oh hey, I found just the walrus song. I believe the lyrics are nonsense in both the English and Danish versions, so you're not missing much.

How Are We Not Always Talking About Duelin' Firemen?

I'm only a minute in and already I've seen the Space Shuttle Columbia crash into a skyscraper. We are approaching Die Hard levels of retroactive cringing.- 2 replies

And then tegan finally deleted her Penny Arcade bookmark. At this point I was only really interested in Checkpoint anyway.

In the case of Plague Dogs and Brave Little Toaster, you could probably post the whole movie. I saw Samson and Sally as a kid, which is one long string of surprisingly dark imagery. As a kid I was terrified by the shot of blood clouding up in the water when Samson's mother is killed by whalers, and as an adult I'm terrified by the bit where the comic relief walruses get radiation poisoning from eating tainted fish (plus all the stuff that implies it takes place in a post-apocalyptic wasteland). This version's been brightened up a bit, but . I tried to find this movie for years and was eventually convinced that I must have imagined it before someone posted it on 4chan a year or two ago. Also, I don't think I actually saw this until I was an adult, but (linked here in English, but also available on Youtube in the original Japanese with subtitles if you prefer that) was like a carefully calculated attempt to scare children. It was made by Sanrio, the same company that makes Hello Kitty and got Osamu Tezuka to make Unico. It's about an adorable lamb who, after seeing his mother killed by a wolf, decides to become a wolf himself, devoting his life to cold cruelty. Also, I'm gonna' throw in The Horned King from The Black Cauldron just for good measure even though I actually really liked that movie and watched it fairly often.

I'm not entirely sure where I want to go with this, so I'm not putting it on the tumblr just yet, but I really like how it's coming along so far.

Today's Retronauts has an amazing anecdote about Bob Mackey being suspected of trying to start a school shooting when he was a teenager.

So despite being very bad at it, I love Advance Wars. And I figure since strategy games seem to be big on here I'm probably not the only one. Unfortunately there hasn't been a new game in more than five years, though Intelligent Systems has sort of teased that they're making a 3DS entry. Personally, I've been playing a lot of the original lately. I started a third runthrough to unlock the last of the COs recently, and I'm stuck on "The Final Battle" with Grit and Kanbei. Any tips? I usually just spam mechs with Andy and try to overwhelm Sturm, but I haven't been able to make any headway whatsoever and can't find any help online (the guides are all written for more different teams).

Obligatory Comical YouTube Thread II: The Fall of YouTube
tegan replied to pabosher's topic in Idle Banter
In retrospect; holy shit it was Requiem For a Dream. Like it was remade or edited down for time or something and used as an anti-drug PSA, but still. -
Inafune specifically pushed to make MM9 and 10 2D retro-style games. I'm pretty sure they were a labour of love on his part.

http://saltybet.com/'>Saltybet is a game in which you bet fake money on pro-level fighting games. THE TWIST: the only game being played is one of those hilariously broken user-created fighting games like M.U.G.E.N. Best matches I've watched so far were some DBZ character vs The Blob (a dull metallic sphere) and Lex Luthor vs somebody's Ryu sprite edit self-insert character.

...Aaaaaaand funded!

It depends on the series, but I generally prefer the former. The most striking example I can think of is the manga Yotsuba&! The Yen Press translation is clunky and unnatural while the ADV translation was far stronger for taking a handful of creative liberties and avoiding honorifics and untranslated text wherever possible. Its reads like transcripts of actual conversation. Also, “Explaining humor is a lot like dissecting a frog, you learn a lot in the process, but in the end you kill it.” ~Mark Twain
