They were unlicensed, and bypassed the lockout chip by shocking it. For realsies. Between that and the rampant clone games, pretty much the only reason they didn't get sued is because they're a small, religious company.

"The future of sign waving" is the best tagline. Also, I can't imagine that being more affordable than just hiring someone to wave a sign in the short term or just buying a standing sign in the long term.

I wish that there were more real instances of unidentified sea creatures being caught on film or washing up on beaches, and not just hoaxes or partially decomposed oarfish and stuff. My favourite one is this video of a Mangapinna squid.

The Thing is easily one of my favourite movies, though I strangely do not own a copy. The things I like about The Mist and Monsters are that they have at times beautiful creatures with very Lovecraftian anatomy that you never quite get a good look at and are largely secondary to a different story. Everything about those two movies is emotional and and mysterious. Everyone who hasn't seen Monsters should do so, by the way. The entire thing's on Youtube, even: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94AkakJAmR0

Apropos of nothing, I ended up watching Gwoemul/The Host. Neat movie! From Wikipedia:

I feel like watching something in the same vein as "Monsters" or "The Mist," but I can't think of anything else that falls under that umbrella.

Idle Thumbs 140: The Customer's Always An Asshole

The first time I ever heard about DayZ was from a friend at work. Since we're both Canadian, he pronounced it "Day Zed" instead of "Day Zee" and it took me ages to realize that the game that the Thumbs had started talking about was the same one. Also, work friend never told me what the game was about so for whatever reason I just assumed it would be some Lumines deal called "DaZed." -
I drew a Ripper, one of those little bug guys that flies back and forth in vertical shafts in Metroid. I modeled my redesign after the Nautilus, because jet propulsion. So I was talking with Miffy about the prints I've been trying to sell. I've been trying to keep the prices low by taking a very small cut, so the base prices for prints are only $15 and $18 for the small sizes I'm doing. The thing is, I only get a cut of about two dollars. I'm terrible at pricing my own work... Do you think I should add a larger cut for myself? It's not like I actually sell anything.

You have the option of no longer requiring sleep, food, or air. There are no hidden drawbacks, and you can still choose to voluntarily perform the action you've given up in case you want to. Which do you pick? Get more done in a day? Never get fat? Hang out with some fish? It's up to you.

Regarding Montpelier: what if the guy wasn't from America? Personally I use this song to remember the names of state capitols, and it uses a more French pronounciation. I like to imagine the guy was actually reciting the song in his head to try to remember the answer too. -
Chibi-Robo comes out today! Hooraaaaaay!

I'm having a crummy time lately. I haven't had a good night's sleep in weeks, I'm not making enough money to keep up with my bills, and depression keeps hitting me hard when I'm down.

That assumes you only use your PC for gaming and basic activities though. Lots of people rely on certain software besides just those (ie: I need Photoshop and Manga Studio to run on any PC I own).

let me give you the gist of it

I think that Japanese game development's super bizarre flavour of sexist imagery has reached its logical conclusion with the new Senran Kagura “big breasts hyper rhythm cooking battle” spinoff.

I'll call your bluff. Yes.

Although I can't really afford either, buying a $400 console and paying $60 or so for games doesn't seem as reasonable in the long term as buying a Steam Machine and getting all my games at severe discounts through Steam sales.

I always get Super Saver, but my stuff always arrives super early.

I really wish we'd just get another Metroid game.
