Idle Thumbs 152: Piercing the Fourth Dimension

He also played (or at least his voice). (LaMarche's Orson Welles impression actually bugs me. It doesn't sound like Orson Welles, it sounds like a slowed-down Vincent Price) -
For anyone like me who was worried about the GBA emulation on the Wii U having dim colours and a lack of features like the GBA Ambassador Program games on the 3DS did: Worry not! It turns out that GBA stuff is being handled by M2, who also do the Sega VC games on the 3DS. I just bought Advance Wars to try it out for myself. Everything looks great, there've been no changes to the colours, and in addition to the normal Wii U VC features (gamepad play, button remapping, and save states), there's an easy to toggle screen filter option, you can resize the image on the TV between fullscreen and a pixel-perfect version, and the manuals are actually scans of the original manuals that you can either browse on your own time or refer to on the gamepad while you play on the TV.

I feel this old Cuteosphere comic is sort of relevant: -

Relistening to the "fans of the genre" discussion reminded me: I once saw a review for a Sonic the Hedgehog game described it as a game that people who enjoy Sonic the Hedgehog games will enjoy. As trite as that sentence is, it's also what the entire body of every Sonic review should be. -

Regarding the theater Kickstarter mentioned at the beginning of the podcast: was there a Phantom of the Opera donation tier where you get a box seat reserved for you at every showing of every movie, regardless of whether you attend or not? Because I would totally do that if I were kickstarting a theater. I wish I had more interest in local politics, but Canadian politics are generally kind of boring. For the longest time I was always able to go "well, they may be boring, but at least Canadian politicians aren't completely batshit like American ones tend to be." And then Rob Ford showed up. -
GBA games hit Virtual Console today! I would totally buy them ASAP if I didn't already own all of them as physial cartridges.

As a kid it's about wearing green and pinching, as an adult it's about getting stone-drunk. ...tberton's more right though.

I wish Danielle were a regular cast member. She is my favourite guest. The dagger thing used in place of an asterisk is also called an obelisk, hence these two being named Asterix and Obelix. Regarding comedians responding to changing modern attitudes: have you guys seen what Gallagher's up to lately? -
It's weird how Holidays completely change as you get older. First you believe in Santa, then you find the truth about Santa, and then you become Santa. ...Probably the weirdest one is St Patrick's Day.

You Yoshinari (an animator who's worked on Gurren Lagann, among other things) made a couple of soundless short sequences based on Osamu Tezuka properties.

1. All the cheap copies there are used ones with wear. I'm looking for something in good shape. 2. Apollo's Song. It was later reprinted in two separate volumes, but I have the one-volume version with the awesome Chip Kidd cover that uses a small strategically-placed dustjacket. It's a really great, incredibly weird, overtly sexual read. 3. I missed the Kickstarter, but I'm kind of glad that I did. The books were supposed to go out last summer, but nobody's gotten anything yet and the publisher hasn't made any statements or responded to any messages since January. It seems like they either bit off more than they can chew or just took the money and ran.

That's not half bad.

I got bored and put all of my Tezuka books on the floor* and took pictures of them. *not counting artbooks, essays, duplicates, or non-English versions. This is every English Tezuka book except for Metropolis, which I can't find anywhere for less than seventy bucks.

Inspired by a Bombcast from a few weeks back, I have started utting 25 cents in a savings account every time I die in Spelunky, starting yesterday. Let's see how much I accrue by this time next month!

I'm getting cabin fever here. It's been either snowing or hailing in Moncton for a week now. You can't go outside without either getting snowblind or poundd by hail, there's 28000 people with no power, and I can't buy milk because the power went out at the pharmacy last night and they had to dump theirs.

Yup. Poison, confusion, spikes, weather, etc would all kill it; but the guy didn't come equipped with any of those.
