  1. Cartoons!

Holy shit, that season premiere of Adventure Time.
  2. I saw a sweet Godzilla figure at the comic shop the other day and I kind of want it now.
  3. Comics Extravaganza - Pow Bang Smash!

Well if it's only six pages I guess I might give it a shot. Unrelated: I started reading a lesbian manga called Honey & Honey that I'm really digging. It's got a real Rica 'tte Kanji vibe to it.

I liked most of the preview, but thought it was pretty terrible that Dan Savage did a comic about how much he understood the idea of playing with gender expression as a kid when he's such a famously transphobic asshole.

Everyone owns so many more towels than I do. (I own three body towels and one hand towel, because I am poor)

I started reading another lesbian slice of life series called Honey and Honey and I'm really digging it. It's got very much the same tone as Rica 'tte Kanji did, and similarly simplistic art. One really interesting thing that came up in it: gay marriage is still illegal in Japan, so couples there still practice the older legal shenanigan of having their partner adopted into their family for legal purposes.

He did co-write Toy Story, so he can't be all bad.

I know it's a long shot, but has anyone here read No Straight Lines? It's a collection of LGBT indie comics, which sounds right up my alley, but it's like fourty dollars and I'm not sure if I want to make that investment. It also has work by Dan Savage, who is an asshole.

Oh man, I just realized that I should totally recommend it to a friend of mine. He's gay, middle-aged, and a former professional chef. He'd probably love it.

This one right here. It's the same reason I dislike it when people say they'd rather call themselves as "equalist" or something equivalent. Avoiding using the word "feminism" displays a fundamental unwillingness to acknowledge that the disparity between treatment of the sexes is weighted overwhelmingly against women and femininity, much less a willingness to do anything about it. I seem to remember he also said something about how he was qualified to judge the aesthetic value of words because he's a writer. No Joss, you wrote a few cancelled sci-fi miniseries and Alien Resurrection, not the fucking Tempest.

Rica 'tte Kanji is a super adorable lesbian romance made by a Japanese lesbian illustrator who was tired of all the "forbidden love" and tragic ending crap in most lesbian manga. It's about as indie as independent manga come, so it's got some weird quirks as far as official translations go (like all the text being in Comic Sans, but it's cute and it's available in English for free as an ebook because the English publisher decided to stopp printing books. There's also a Kindle edition for like five bucks under the alternate title "Tokyo Love." I'm lucky enough to have a print copy of the original version. Wandering Son is primarily a slice of life drama series, but it builds more and more romantic relationships and hangups between the characters. The twist is that the characters are all kids, and that most of the major players are struggling with their gender identity and sexuality. The primary tension comes from the main character, who is MTF trans, having a crush on an FTM trans kid and not being sure if they like them as a straight girl crushing on a boy, a straight cis boy crushing on a girl, or a lesbian crushing on a tomboy. Currently being published in English by Fantagraphics. This is actually my favourite currently-running manga by a wide margin. I haven't read What Did You Eat Yesterday? yet, but I fully intend to at some point. I know it's about gay dudes and food, so you know it's gotta' be good. Currently being published by Vertical, who do awesome work. I also fully intend to watch Sakura Trick at some point, but haven't seen anything more than the theme song and some positive word of mouth. I don't actually read/watch much pure romance stuff, to be honest

Ouran High School Host Club is a parody of shoujo romance manga that somehow manages to be much better at it than the real thing. Sorry I don't have any other suggestions, but all the other romance manga I read is LGBT-themed.

I agree that Joss Whedon is kind of crummy, and I really disliked that speech he gave a while back about feminism that totally missed the point.

I binge-watched all of Rick and Morty the other day and that show is fantastic. I think the my favourite was the one with the David Cross alien, mainly on the strength of Jerry's simulation.
  17. Idle Sugar

I got some discount candy today because it's the day after Easter, but not much good since I'm not a big chocolate person. I like sour gummies the best. There's been a sale on Licorice Babies at the drugstore here forever and I keep thinking of picking up a bag and mailing it to Idle Thumbs c/o Nick Breckon.
  18. Idle Workouts

I need to make more effort to excercise. I want to lose fat without gaining muscle. I try to walk for at least twenty minutes a day, but that can get a little dull.

Man, I love that dude. He did the episode of the French cartoon Wakfu that explains the villain's backstory, and it's much closer to his usual stuff. It's also the best episode of the series.
  21. Comics Extravaganza - Pow Bang Smash!

I read the first issue of All New Ghost Rider and liked it, but I'm not entirely sure if I want to continue. Maybe I'll wait for a TPB release. I know it's not likely to happen, but if this series were guaranteed to never cross over with anything else I'd probably be a lot more willing to get into it.

I watched The Curse of Kazuo Umezu tonight. It's a pair of short animated horror films by Kazuo Umezu of The Drifting Classroom and Cat Eyed Boy fame, produced all the way back in 1990. The first half is a really fascinating story about a girl who suspects her new classmate is a vampire after she wakes up with an inexplicable cut in her neck, while the second is a decent but fairly familiar story about four girls investigating a spooky old mansion. The animation's not great (since, you know, 1990 and all), but there's some great shots and both stories are really fun romps. The thing that really draws me toward anime is that it evolved without the caveats of western animation. How often do you see something like a horror cartoon come out of the west? A straight-up horror story, without the teeth filed off by comic relief characters and happy endings? Even with all its flaws I still love this kind of thing.

Fans of the series will find a lot to love here. A visceral, nonstop thrill-ride that will blow you away and leave you wanting more. 6.4/10
