  1. Shaving My Thumbs

I was planning on going to the US, heard that they take finger prints and I didn't want my finger prints on file. I had also recently watched Men in Black... Unfortunately it didn't fully remove my prints, and it hurt like hell. I had a 'night gib' (11pm-9am at an internet cafe) that week too which it messed up!
  2. @Berzee I also pirated the progresscasts lol :/ (totally missed the kickstarter)
  3. You guys have read that Miyazaki qoute on the show before Also:
  4. Dune

I don't know how I missed this thread, Dune is probably my favourite book ever. I read it when I was maybe 12 and I remember finding it quite challenging at the time (still learning English). I've since re-read it once and I liked it just as much the second time. Some people apparently don't like Herbert's style of writing, but it for me it clicked. As already mentioned, the world building in Dune is better than anything I've read. It's the best example of how powerful a tool that can be in capturing the readers' imaginations. Maybe it was because I read it when I was still young and impressionable, but I don't think so. There is a strong appeal to a world as well crafted as this one. It captures my imagination like nothing else. You guys were discussing the covers. One of the links is dead now so I don't know if it was the same cover, but this is the one my dad's version had and I think it's nice I never read the sequels and I don't think I will, I feel content with the book being a standalone thing. Sequels so often end up demystifying the parts that kept you intrigued, and retroactively make the original works worse. I'd rather not risk it. As for the movie, it probably won't be great. I didn't love Arrival either, it was fine but didn't leave much of an impression. Dune is by its nature very hard to turn into a movie, so much of the book is about the characters' inner thoughts, tiny imperceptible gestures, feints within feints within feints... but if it's bad, so what? We still have the book, and one more failed attempt at a filmed adaptation doesn't really matter. I haven't watched the movie yet though, maybe I should. (I've seen the first few minutes and I like those). Man, now I kinda want to re-read Dune again. But I'm also afraid of spoiling it by reading it too many times.
  5. Yeah it's garbage. Someone in chat said "it's not grinding". I've not seen people be more in denial about something in a game than the healing system in BB. Next time though, Krikhammer!
  6. I think struggling with Central Yarnham is a pretty typical experience with Bloodborne. The cane is not that bad either, just takes a bit more finesse to use. More fun to watch in my opinion. I'm sure he'll get to a place where he's powering through the game soon enough.
  7. Shaving My Thumbs

The title of this thread reminds me of the time I put my thumb on a sander to try to remove my finger prints
  8. Other podcasts

A gaming podcast I've been listening to for a while now is the 4 Player Podcast. It's not by people in the industry, just a group of friends but they have good discussions on a lot of topics, both PC and console games. They usually swap in their producer when one of them can't make it and I'm not a fan of him on the show, but other than that it's probably my favourite gaming podcast at the moment.
  9. The guy who voices the clinic cutscene sounds a bit like Jonathan Pryce to me.
  10. So, there was no BB stream I take it?
  11. He is? I want to tune in for that Did he end up beating all the DLC bosses?
  12. Now go back to ME2, it's even slower! I like it though.
  13. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

The Bothan spies thing is in RotJ, the Emperor makes a comment to Luke about how he more or less gave them the info. However, the opening crawl (of ANH) does mention the events of RO:
  14. I don't think I've played Jedi Outcast without cheating to get the lightsaber in the first level. I also spent way more time with the demo than the actual game.
  15. Operation Flashpoint is definitely an acquired taste, but I think it's brilliant. Much of what made DayZ great can be traced directly back to OpFl. I'm not sure if you know but there's a feature to speed up time, just like in flight sims, so those dull sections can be over quite fast. It is a game where you fail a lot though. As for RTCW, that's a beloved game and I have some fondness for it too, but I replayed it maybe two years ago and found that aside from a few levels it really wasn't that great. It's also strangely punishing at times. The only thing that really holds up about it is the flamethrower effect.
  16. I think Darklurker is easily the best boss in DS2. Shame that it's hidden behind some bs and that a 50 str build will wreck it and make it seem really plain. It's the Dark Souls way I suppose.
  17. This year's deliberations weren't brutal enough for my tastes. I liked it more when they started with a huge list of games and cut them one by one, instead of doing it the other way around this time. Maybe they're too old for the endless arguing now. Brad gave up easier on Doom than he's done with other games in the past. I think Jeff was personally really disappointed by the MP and wasn't going to let that slide, and the others could probably have gone either way, except Brad.
  18. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

One thing I forgot to add: I think they should've cut the scene with Vader on Mustafar(?). Completely pointless if you ask me. The bit where Jyn meets her dad didn't add much either (I mean the whole sequence on that planet). It did remind me of the opening of Goldeneye though, just the way the place looked. In the end I kinda liked that it wasn't about Jyn's vendetta with Krennic. Maybe it's unsatisfying that she doesn't get the catharsis of killing him, but we've had that story enough times. The only problem is that her character motivation isn't strong enough. Also, I went into this more or less blind. Had no idea this was even about the Death Star plans. Seems like people who followed the movie already knew most of it. I think I prefer not having a ton of expectations going in. edit: last thing, I was hoping we'd get a movie without any light sabers. I guess this was close enough. Too many light sabers was one of the bigger problems with the PT.
  19. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Saw this yesterday so I'm catching up on the discussion. I agree about Tarkin, I found his face quite distracting (Leia much less so), however in terms of fidelity his voice work was much further off the mark and that bothered me more. Not sure how noticeable it was to everyone else (I like to think I'm fairly good at 'spotting' voices), but Tarkin had a very particular way of speaking; his line delivery is seared into my brain and this was not that. Maybe it's a problem that hasn't had enough money thrown at it yet, but I could imagine it being quite a hard one as well. We spend our entire lives training our brains to pick up on the most subtle differences in people's voice, just like faces. Anyway, this was a strange movie. I liked it, however I'm not at all sure if watching it again will make its flaws stand out even more, or if it'll make the movie better. I don't know what's going on. There isn't a lot of characterisation, yet I still have a feel for the characters. So while I think that they should have, for example, given more scenes with Chirrut (blind guy) and Jyn is still worked. An extended version of this film could maybe make me care more about them at the end though. I mean, I liked the characters but I also wasn't super upset that they all ate it. The only one in the main cast I didn't care for was Cassian. Didn't like the guy playing him and didn't really like his character and for someone taking up that much screen time he needed to be better. Not sure if I like it more than TFA. The best parts of TFA are on Jakku in my opinion, and after that it's a little hit and miss. The part with the tentacle monster bored me even the first time, the pacing is a little off and the Starkiller Base battle felt too much like a retread of ANH. Rogue One's final battle scene was more enjoyable, even though it tries to evoke the battle from RotJ a little too much in my opinion. Flying down through the shield is a bit like flying into the Death Star, the Star Destroyer that loses engine power and crashes into another ship, all those Rebel cruisers joining the fight (I know they're shown in Empire too, but having them fight is very RotJ) etc.
  20. I've written a lot of words about the Blood Vial system; in my mind it's the one change that is inarguably for the worse. Of course, not everyone agrees. I've yet to see a good argument for it. They usually go: -I never needed to grind [and therefore neither should you] (good for you, that doesn't address anything) -It motivates you to play better because there's more at stake (like you magically unlock your potential by being threatened with grinding) People will often use both, not realising they're contradictory (if you're never affected by it, how is it a good design change?). The truth of the matter is that it punishes people for doing worse and I think the nothing-to-lose aspect of Souls games once you die a few times is something good, not something bad. 20 vials would probably be too many if they refilled every time, but whatever. I think Estus is one of the best healing systems in any game, and I think the ability to pick up blood vials as you go allows you to almost always be stocked up on them while you explore. You never get the tension from being down to one flask and trying to find the next bonfire. Anyway Kyir, I recommend stocking up on them early. It used to be you could only have 100 of them but it's much higher now. They're easiest to buy in the beginning IMO because they get price hikes later on (that is dumb too). Grinding in this game kinda sucks btw because you inexplicably can't rest at a lamp and respawn the enemies.
  21. I've also thought about From making a Dune game. They'd nail the combat and setting, I'm quite sure of that. A Japanese take on Dune would probably be strange though.
  22. Recently completed video games

    That graffiti didn't last long
  23. GOTY.cx 2016

I realised that I've only played two games this year. The Witness and Dark Souls 3, and I didn't finish either of them. I like Dark Souls 3, but I was pretty disappointed by The Witness. It was one of the few games I'd been looking forward to for a long time and thought could actually be good. If Doom is as good as people say it is I suspect it would have been my GotY, but I need a new PC for that.
  24. Shouldn't Nick do Darklurker before the DLC? :/ I feel like he's going to DPS down the coolest boss in the game if he does it last. Haha. I will say that horse totally ruined me.
