It's hard to know, but I don't think VRAM will be an issue. You need to be running 1440p (or even higher) with massive textures to use all that memory, or use tons of MSAA. If you're fine with a single monitor setup at 1080p having 4GB is overkill. I think a 250GB SSD is a much better investment.

I'm so excited that Sean got into DkS2 if he finishes it I hope he goes back and tries the first one, it'd be very interesting to hear what someone thinks of it after playing the sequel first. I like doing that during summers, it's nice to be without internet for a while. I usually save up a few weeks worth of podcasts though hehe.

Dark Souls 2 (Dark Souls successor (Demon's Souls successor))

Figured I'd reply to this here instead of the DkS thread. I like that they went for that, because as you said it makes for some great areas. Gorgeous view indeed. The problem I have is that they mostly stuck to the no loading screen philosophy of the first game. It made sense there, because the world was so dense. In this game it doesn't make any sense. Walking through a 50m long tunnel that's actually 50km actually damages my sense of place. I would've preferred some means of in world travel. Since you warp everywhere it's not even a problem of having to watch a cutscene each time. Also, if you're going to have a game set in a massive kingdom, maybe have a proper map or something. I just wish I had a sense of where one location was in relation to another.- 1284 replies

It can be hard to make sense of the story on your own, so once you're done I recommend looking up some lore videos on youtube. There's a series called 'prepare to cry' which is excellent. EpicNameBro also has good videos but they tend to be on the long side.

My take on that.

It's a good game. They doubled the staff but lost Miyazaki and the game reflects that. I booted up Dark Souls last night and it felt a bit like going back to ME1 from ME2. It's got more soul (no pun intended) but also way more jank. I'd be surprised if it isn't my favourite game of the year, it's just not going to be my favourite game of all time like the first one is.

I didn't think this would happen, but as it turns out Dark Souls 2 has the dubious honour of having the most bullshit bossfight in all the souls games.- 1284 replies

You can get quite a few Estus upgrades early on if you know where they are, so if you can't make progress you can always look them up. You can also probably make a suicide run to get the ring of binding.- 1284 replies

I decided to do the 30 day cold shower challenge. I've heard people claim there are all sorts of health benefits from cold showers, that it's good for your skin, immune system etc. I don't know about those things, but it is a good willpower exercise. You definitely get better at overcoming hesitation, and you gain an appreciation for how long five minutes is. I might continue with them because it's a habit now, plus it makes you feel refreshed and alert whereas hot showers make me a little drowsy. It might be that the water's gotten slightly warmer, but I think you build up cold tolerance. The first time I got shortness of breath and couldn't really wash myself because my arms were shivering too much haha, but that got better.

You can get a slab much earlier than that! You're right though, that is quite early to max out a weapon. I had a slower progression, because I never joined that covenant plus I upgraded two weapons so I was short on chunks for a long time. Even after I got them I kept my weapons at +8 until the last great soul. It felt like I was doing enough damage as it was. If you go out of your way you can over-upgrade in Dark Souls too. On my second character I got a +15 weapon before fighting the Gargoyles, you only have to kill Capra to get the large ember and you can kill Ingward for the New Londo key to get the very large one.- 1284 replies

Interesting, I must've missed some chunks then. Or maybe you mean farming them in the Belfry- 1284 replies

When you say before Lost Bastille, do you mean going there through the regular progression? Otherwise it's a bit meaningless, I mean you could technically do it as the fourth path couldn't you?- 1284 replies

I had one invasion when I went back to FoFG to kill the first Heide Knight, whom I ignored when I first went through there. Invasions have never been my favourite part of Dark Souls even though I tend to like non-consensual PVP. That said, I too kind of miss the red phantom invasions. The way PvP is set up in DkS2 isn't very interesting. They set up gank zones and the best way to deal with it is just to run in, die and do your business while the invasion is on cooldown. The darkwraiths in the first game added to the tension instead of adding tedium, and the hunt was more interesting than walking into a small boxing ring that is the Belfry Luna.- 1284 replies

The mention of a shotgun makes me slightly hesitant, I have a hard time getting into something with a fantasy aesthetic that mixes in too much technology. It's like steampunk. Still interested though, just hope I don't have to get a PS4 to play it. -

The Large/Great Club is great for the lizards, because the 2-handed running attack is an overhead smash. You probably don't even need to upgrade it to kill them. Speaking of lizards, the one in Huntsman's Copse is the worst. The worst. I spent, no joke, over 30 minutes trying to kill it.- 1284 replies

The Cloranthy Ring does not seem nearly as powerful as in DkS so I took that off pretty early on. I mostly use the Ring of Blades +1 like you, then the Royal Soldier's Ring (equip load) and Ring of Steel Protection. When I go human I put on the Life Ring +1 (I almost never go human). I've also used the Mace a lot, it's great in many situations, but the range is very short and in this game you push enemies back when you hit them, so if you combo hits they sometimes move out of range. I've also found the running attack to not be so great, it has a long recovery and doesn't do enough damage to compensate. The Mace is also terrible against small enemies, the second swing always misses dogs for me (I do love the backstab animation though). I have the Great Club as a backup but I feel like it's too powerful in some situations so it's no fun. Just for the sake of variety I started upgrading the Smelter Sword as well, it has some really cool R2s with a flame effect. As far as I know, ADP does help you raise your shield faster, not sure about the stun.- 1284 replies

I've heard the complaint that there are too many humanoid bosses in this game, but I've fought plenty of creature bosses. A lot of them have awesome designs. Where they disappoint is in the mechanics of the fight. My favourite boss designs (visually) have almost all been pushovers and the game just isn't at its best when it's not challenging. I haven't encountered anything that's outright bad the way some of the stuff in Dark Souls is, but I haven't encountered anything as memorable or awe inspiring either. It's missing the Dark Souls je ne sais quoi that made it a classic and not just a great game. Maybe it is just too big and they didn't have the time to take each boss from good to amazing, because I do think most of them are good. Or maybe it's just that I played Dark Souls first.- 1284 replies

I think the pacing of the game might be one of the problems I'm having with it. It's almost a bit samey, which is weird to say because there is a good amount of variety in the areas you go to. There are so many areas though and you're always making progress, you don't get to know every area as well and they don't leave as strong of an impression as in the previous game. I also think the amount of bonfires adds to that, they're slightly too frequent and the impact of reaching one is lessened. There's an area with some nods to Sen's Fortress, and it has three bonfires all of which are placed in plain view, compared to Sen's one hidden bonfire. Not every area is like that but the ones that are feel like you're just passing through. Secondary and tertiary bonfires feel like a design crutch to me, it's what they put in if they couldn't work in a shortcut or the area wasn't interesting enough to repeat. Another thing I miss are the random tough enemies, like Havel, the Black Knights etc. That's also a pacing thing I think.- 1284 replies

I'll try going down to 50% then, but I haven't found as many armor sets in this game. Maybe I said this earlier, but I wish secondary weapon slots didn't count towards your equip load. I'm never going to use all three slots because of that and when my weapon breaks I have to fiddle with the inventory instead of being able to use the actual weapon switching feature. I mean, my weapon weighs like 15 units, that's so much, I can't afford to add that to my load when I'm not getting any benefit from it.- 1284 replies
